Fix Thunderbird Not Receiving or Sending Emails [2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Thunderbird is not receiving or not sending emails in 2024, the cause is usually one of four things: wrong IMAP/SMTP settings, broken authentication, a TLS/port mismatch, or something blocking Thunderbird (add-ons, antivirus, or network filtering).

This guide treats both “send” and “receive” separately so you can stop guessing. You’ll check the exact settings Thunderbird uses, confirm authentication with your provider, and use logs to pinpoint what’s failing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It’s written for modern Thunderbird builds (commonly 115.x or later), but the UI labels and workflow match the standard Thunderbird desktop experience on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Quick Triage: Identify Whether It’s Send, Receive, or Both

Start by reproducing the problem once and noting where it breaks. Thunderbird often shows a clear error in a dialog or the status bar, and it matters whether the failure happens during IMAP (receiving) or SMTP (sending).

  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
  • Only receive fails: IMAP fetch is timing out, rejected, or authentication is failing.
  • Only send fails: SMTP authentication, TLS/ports, or connection policy is wrong.
  • Both fail: profile/account auth is broken, network/TLS is blocked, or the provider temporarily rejects connections.

Also check whether messages are stuck in Outbox or Unsent. A sending failure typically queues messages; receiving failure typically leaves folders unchanged.

Prerequisites Before You Change Settings

Before editing settings, confirm you can trust the inputs you’re about to enter. Many “fixes” fail because credentials or server details don’t match your provider’s current requirements.

What you should gather

  • Your email provider name (Gmail, Microsoft 365/Outlook.com, Yahoo, your custom domain, etc.).
  • Your Thunderbird version (Help → About Thunderbird).
  • The exact error text you see when send/receive fails (copy it if you can).
  • Current IMAP/SMTP hostnames, ports, and security mode from your provider’s official docs.

Confirm you’re online

Try opening a web page in your browser. If you’re on a corporate network, a captive portal, or a VPN that blocks outbound SMTP/IMAP, Thunderbird can fail even with correct settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify Account Type and Core Settings (IMAP/SMTP)

Thunderbird needs IMAP for receiving (typically) and SMTP for sending. If either side is misconfigured, you’ll see “Not authorized,” “Unable to connect,” or TLS errors.

Open the right settings screen

  1. Thunderbird → Account Settings (usually under the hamburger menu or Tools).
  2. Select the affected account.
  3. Check Server Settings for incoming (IMAP) details.
  4. Check Outgoing Server (SMTP) for sending details.

Confirm the receiving protocol

In Server Settings, look for an IMAP server. If you’re using POP3, receiving failure may require different steps, but most modern setups rely on IMAP.

Fix Receiving Issues (IMAP) Step by Step

When Thunderbird won’t receive, the failure is commonly IMAP host/port/security, login credentials, or provider-side restrictions.

1) Trigger a manual download

  1. In Thunderbird, right-click the mailbox account (or Inbox).
  2. Select Get Messages.

If manual retrieval fails, you don’t have to wait for polling. This also makes errors easier to reproduce.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) Check IMAP host, port, and security mode

Go to Account Settings → Server Settings and verify:

  • Server hostname: the IMAP host provided by your email provider (example: imap.gmail.com for Gmail).
  • Port: commonly 993 for IMAP over SSL/TLS.
  • Connection security: commonly SSL/TLS (start with the provider’s recommended mode).

3) Authentication and username format

In Server Settings, confirm the User Name matches the provider’s expectation. Some providers require the full email address; others accept a shorter login name.

4) Ensure you didn’t disable the account

Look for an option to enable/disable the account or folder sync. If you recently imported accounts, it’s possible a folder download is turned off.

Fix Sending Issues (SMTP) Step by Step

Sending problems are typically SMTP host/port/security, SMTP authentication, or provider rules about “less secure” logins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Check the SMTP server selection

  1. Thunderbird → Account Settings.
  2. Select the account under Account Settings.
  3. Go to Outgoing Server (SMTP).
  4. Confirm the correct SMTP entry is selected for that account.

2) Verify SMTP host, port, and security

Open the SMTP server entry (the one used for that account) and verify:

  • Server name: your provider’s SMTP host (for example, smtp.gmail.com for Gmail).
  • Port: commonly 465 or 587.
  • Connection security: commonly SSL/TLS for port 465, or STARTTLS for port 587.

3) SMTP authentication method

Thunderbird typically uses “Normal password” or “OAuth2” depending on how the account was configured. If you’re using a password but the provider now requires an app password or OAuth, SMTP will fail even with correct hostnames.

4) Confirm you’re not stuck in a send queue loop

If a message keeps failing, it can block perception of progress. Clear the queue only after you fix SMTP settings and authentication.

Authentication Failures: Passwords, App Passwords, and OAuth

Many providers changed authentication requirements. In 2024, “my password worked last year” is often the clue that you now need an app password or OAuth.

Gmail and Google Workspace

Gmail typically works best with OAuth2 in modern Thunderbird flows. If you configured using “Normal password” and it fails, you may need:

  • An App Password (only if you use a Google account that supports app passwords and you enabled 2-Step Verification), or
  • Reconfigure the account to use OAuth2 if Thunderbird prompts for it.

If you see “Web login required” or “Username and password not accepted,” assume the authentication method no longer matches the provider’s policy.

Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com

For Microsoft accounts, OAuth is common. If you’re using an older setup that uses a plain password, Thunderbird may receive SMTP auth errors after security changes. The fix is usually to remove and re-add the account so Thunderbird can complete modern authentication, or to switch to app-password style access if your tenant allows it.

Custom domains (cPanel/Exchange/etc.)

Some custom providers support both password auth and OAuth, while others only support app passwords or require specific SMTP AUTH settings. Always use the provider’s documented approach—don’t reuse credentials created for webmail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TLS/SSL, Ports, and Security Mode That Actually Work

Thunderbird errors like “Secure connection failed,” “TLS negotiation failed,” or “certificate” warnings usually map to a TLS/port/security mismatch or a blocked TLS handshake.

Common working defaults

Service Typical port Typical connection security in Thunderbird
IMAP 993 SSL/TLS
SMTP (implicit SSL) 465 SSL/TLS
SMTP (submission) 587 STARTTLS

If your provider recommends a specific combination, follow it exactly. Mixing 465 with STARTTLS (or 587 with SSL/TLS) is a fast way to create persistent failures.

Certificate and time drift issues

On Windows, macOS, or Linux systems with incorrect system time, TLS validation can fail. Verify the system clock and timezone are correct, then retry.

Check Queue, Storage, and Folder Health

For receiving issues, folder corruption can stop updates. For sending issues, queued messages can hide the real error if you only look at the Outbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear or inspect the send queue

  1. Go to the folder that holds unsent messages (often Unsent Messages).
  2. Open a failed message and read the error details if Thunderbird shows them.
  3. After fixing SMTP settings, attempt to resend.

Check disk space and permissions

If Thunderbird cannot write to its profile mail storage, you may see erratic behavior. Ensure you have free disk space and that Thunderbird’s profile directory is readable/writable.

Inspect Error Messages and Thunderbird Logs

Logs are where you stop guessing. They typically reveal whether the failure happens during DNS, connection, TLS negotiation, or authentication.

Enable detailed logging

  1. Thunderbird → Help → Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Look for Open Folder for profiles and logs.
  3. Find or enable logging for mail/news (wording can vary by version; look for mail-related log options).

If you can’t find the exact toggle, you can still use the existing log files in the profile’s log directory.

What to look for

  • DNS / hostname failures: “server not found,” “unknown host.”
  • Connection timeouts: blocked ports, VPN issues, or firewall rules.
  • TLS errors: certificate or protocol mismatch.
  • Auth failures: 535/530-style responses, “not authorized,” “bad credentials.”

Copy the relevant lines (not the whole file) and search them against the provider docs or forums if you need a provider-specific mapping.

Rule Out Add-ons, Antivirus, and Network Middleboxes

Sometimes the email settings are fine and the network or extensions are the problem.

Test in Safe Mode

  1. Close Thunderbird.
  2. Start Thunderbird in Safe Mode (from the main launch option prompt, or by using the “safe mode” startup method for your OS).
  3. Try sending/receiving again.

If it works in Safe Mode, disable add-ons one by one (Tools → Add-ons) and retest.

Antivirus and firewall interference

Temporarily disable HTTPS scanning or mail scanning features in your security software (you’re testing, not adopting this change long-term). If sending suddenly works, adjust exclusions for Thunderbird’s executable and its profile directory.

VPN, proxies, and captive portals

Switch networks if possible (e.g., mobile hotspot). If it works on hotspot but not on the original network, the culprit is often outbound filtering of SMTP/IMAP.

Rebuild Indexes and Repair the Mail Store

If receiving stalls without clear auth errors, Thunderbird may be struggling with local indexes or message databases.

Rebuild the global search index

  1. Thunderbird → Settings (or Preferences).
  2. Find Search index settings (varies by version).
  3. Use the option to rebuild indexes if present.

Repair mailbox (when available)

In some Thunderbird builds, there’s a “Repair” option per folder. If it exists in your UI, run it for the problem mailbox.

Repair should be treated like a last-mile fix. If you’re seeing authentication or connection errors, fix those first.

Create a backup of your profile

  1. Thunderbird → Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click Open Folder for your profile.
  3. Copy the profile folder somewhere safe.

Start with a fresh profile (if needed)

You can create a new Thunderbird profile and re-add the account. If the new profile works, the previous profile likely has database or settings corruption.

When the Problem Is Only With One Provider

Provider-specific rules often change. If only Gmail, only Microsoft, or only your custom domain fails, follow that provider’s current setup guidance.

Gmail-specific gotchas

  • “Less secure app” style setups are no longer broadly reliable; use OAuth2 or app passwords where supported.
  • Make sure your SMTP server uses the provider’s recommended port/security (often 465 SSL/TLS or 587 STARTTLS).
  • Check whether the account has 2-Step Verification enabled and whether app passwords are permitted.

Microsoft-specific gotchas

  • Modern authentication is common; a password-only SMTP setup can fail.
  • Tenant policies may block basic authentication. Re-adding the account with OAuth is often the cleanest path.

Common Mistakes That Keep Reappearing

  • Wrong security mode: using SSL/TLS when the provider expects STARTTLS (or vice versa).
  • Port mismatch: entering 465 with port 587 assumptions.
  • Forgetting the right username: using a login name when the provider expects the full email address.
  • Cached/bad saved passwords: Thunderbird may keep an invalid credential. Clear saved passwords and retry authentication.
  • Changing only one side: fixing IMAP but not SMTP (or the reverse).
  • Assuming Outbox means send failed permanently: messages can queue until SMTP auth is corrected.

Troubleshooting Checklist (Fast Reproducible Order)

Use this order when you want the fastest path to a fix with minimal churn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reproduce once with Get Messages and attempt sending one known test email.
  2. Confirm Thunderbird version in Help → About Thunderbird.
  3. Verify Account Settings → Server Settings (IMAP hostname, port, connection security).
  4. Verify Account Settings → Outgoing Server (SMTP) (SMTP hostname, port, connection security).
  5. Fix authentication: switch to app password or OAuth as required by your provider.
  6. Check TLS/cert issues: system time correct; try different network if possible.
  7. Test in Safe Mode to rule out add-ons.
  8. Inspect the log lines for the exact failure stage (DNS, TLS, auth, timeout).
  9. Repair/rebuild indexes only after server/auth checks succeed.
  10. If still broken, create a new Thunderbird profile and re-add the account.

Bottom Line

For Thunderbird not receiving or sending emails in 2024, the most reliable fixes start with the basics: confirm IMAP/SMTP hostnames, ports, and security mode, then correct authentication using the method your provider requires (often OAuth2 or app passwords). When those are wrong, logs won’t lie—and the same symptoms will keep repeating.

If you want a single “best next step” after reading this: open Account Settings → Server Settings and Outgoing Server (SMTP), verify the ports/security exactly match your provider’s documentation, then re-authenticate and retry with Safe Mode if it still fails.

FAQs

Thunderbird says authentication failed, but my password is correct

Many providers require an app password or OAuth2 instead of your normal webmail password. Clear saved credentials in Thunderbird and re-authenticate using the provider’s supported method.

My send test email stays in Outbox/Unsent

That usually means SMTP can’t authenticate or connect. Re-check the SMTP host/port/security and confirm the SMTP entry used by the account. Then resend after auth is corrected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Receiving works on one network but not another

That strongly suggests a firewall, VPN, proxy, or network filtering rule blocking IMAP/SMTP. Try a different network (mobile hotspot) and adjust security software rules if needed.

Do I need to reinstall Thunderbird?

Usually no. Reinstalling won’t fix wrong server settings, broken authentication, blocked TLS handshakes, or profile/database issues. Start with account settings and logs, then move to a fresh profile only if necessary.

Where can I find the real error details?

Use Thunderbird’s logs via Help → Troubleshooting Information. Look for lines that mention SMTP/IMAP, TLS, and authentication responses; those lines point to the exact failing stage.
