DiskPart shows “There are no fixed disks to show” when it cannot enumerate an internal fixed disk in the environment where you ran list disk. The message does not prove the drive has failed. First check whether the SSD or hard drive appears in your computer’s BIOS/UEFI storage information: if it does not, investigate firmware detection or hardware; if it does, check whether Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or Windows Setup needs the correct storage-controller driver.
What the DiskPart error means
DiskPart is reporting what it can currently see—not diagnosing why a disk is missing. A drive might be absent from firmware, or visible to BIOS/UEFI but unavailable to the recovery or installation environment. In a Microsoft Q&A report dated August 23, 2024, a user saw this message in WinRE while only the Boot (X:) drive was visible. That is one reported case, not evidence that every instance has the same cause: Microsoft Q&A: No disk appears on WinRE.

Check whether DiskPart lists a disk
If you are already at the DiskPart prompt, run:
list diskNote whether an internal disk appears. This is an observation step; it does not repair or change the disk. If no internal disk is listed, do not select or modify a disk based on assumptions. The next useful check is in BIOS/UEFI.

Check the drive in BIOS/UEFI
Restart the computer and open its BIOS/UEFI setup using the key or method documented by its manufacturer. Look in storage, device, or system information for the SSD or hard drive’s model or capacity. Menu names and access methods vary by computer.

If the drive is absent from BIOS/UEFI
The issue may involve firmware-level detection, a connection, or the drive itself. The DiskPart message alone cannot tell which. Use the computer or drive manufacturer’s model-specific diagnostics and support guidance. Avoid opening the device unless you are qualified and comfortable doing so; otherwise, seek qualified service.
If the drive is present in BIOS/UEFI
If WinRE or Windows Setup still cannot see it, one possibility is that the environment lacks a suitable storage-controller driver. The driver depends on the exact computer and controller. Intel RST/VMD is one example discussed in a third-party guide, not a universal fix. Check the computer manufacturer’s support page for the current driver and instructions for loading it into the recovery or installation environment: Repair Windows guide to the DiskPart error.

Do not switch between RAID, AHCI, or VMD settings as a generic troubleshooting step. Firmware options and the effects of changing them depend on the model and existing Windows configuration; the sources do not establish one setting that is safe or correct for all computers.

Protect data before attempting disk operations
- Do not run destructive DiskPart commands such as
cleanor format when the intended disk is absent or unidentified. - If a disk becomes visible, confirm its identity and contents before selecting it or starting repair or installation actions.
- If the disk remains absent, or it contains important data, stop before destructive troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional.
