Fix the “No Space Left” error in Windows

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Windows error commonly shown as No Space Left usually means your system drive (often C:) has hit a practical “full” state. Windows can behave badly even before the disk is truly at 0 bytes free—especially when updates, cache growth, or temporary files have nowhere to go.

This guide walks you through reliable fixes, starting with the fastest wins and moving toward deeper cleanup methods. You’ll also get troubleshooting steps for the common scenario where you clean files, but free space doesn’t increase.

For a no-space-left error, Outbyte PC Repair can clean temporary and cache files and review disk-related Windows settings.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick target: restore at least 5–10 GB of free space on the system drive so Windows can update, write logs, and complete temporary operations.

What the No Space Left error means in Windows

When Windows can’t write to disk, you might see No space left on device, app install failures, browser download errors, Windows Update stuck states, or even system instability (slow UI, crashes, inability to save).

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The underlying causes typically fall into four buckets:

  • Actual disk full: large user files, downloads, media, or an app/game ballooned.
  • Cache and system growth: Windows Update cache, temp folders, component store buildup.
  • Hidden “system” usage: hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys, reserved storage, restore points.
  • Stalled or broken processes: failed updates or corrupted filesystem preventing space from being reclaimed.

Before you change anything: confirm the real cause

Don’t guess—verify which drive is full and what’s consuming space.

1) Check the specific drive that’s failing

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click This PC.
  3. Look for the drive with 0 bytes or very low free space (typically C:).

If C: is the problem, you’ll focus on system cleanup. If D: (or another drive) is full, you can often fix it by moving or removing data on that specific volume.

2) Identify what’s taking space using built-in tools

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Open the drive showing the issue (usually Local Disk (C:)).
  3. Review categories like Apps, Temporary files, and Other.

If you see Temporary files or Windows Update consuming tens of gigabytes, cleanup will likely be quick.

Fast fixes that usually work (10–30 minutes)

Start with the actions that are low-risk and often recover multiple gigabytes immediately.

Empty Recycle Bin and remove downloads you don’t need

  1. Right-click Recycle Bin on your desktop.
  2. Select Empty Recycle Bin.
  3. Open Downloads, sort by Size, and delete large installers you don’t need.

This is fast, reversible (before it’s emptied), and surprisingly effective—especially after browser download failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear temporary files safely

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type %temp% and press Enter.
  3. Select everything in the folder and delete. Skip anything Windows says is in use.
  4. Repeat with temp by running Win + R > type temp.

These folders often contain installers, update scraps, and leftover files from apps.

Disable or reduce hibernation and clear hiberfil.sys (optional)

If you rarely use hibernation, you can reclaim space by reducing or disabling it. The file hiberfil.sys can be several GB.

  1. Open Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell as Administrator.
  2. Run: powercfg -h off
  3. Reboot and re-check free space.

If you want hibernation back later: run powercfg -h on as Administrator.

Use built-in Windows tools to reclaim space

Windows provides several safe cleanup mechanisms that target system caches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr)

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type cleanmgr and press Enter.
  3. Select C: (or the full drive).
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Clean up system files.
  6. Check items like Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary files, and Delivery Optimization Files.
  7. Click OK > Delete Files.

On many systems, choosing Clean up system files is what unlocks the biggest wins.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Turn on Storage Sense

Storage Sense keeps temp/cache growth in check. It’s especially useful when disks fill gradually.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Find and enable Storage Sense.
  3. Click Configure Storage Sense or run it now.
  4. Under Temporary files, turn on automatic cleanup.
  5. Under Run Storage Sense now, click Clean now.

If your PC is low on space, running it now can help immediately.

Clean up Windows Update files

Windows Update can leave behind large cached files. Disk Cleanup often finds these, but sometimes deeper cleanup is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Open your C: drive.
  3. Open Temporary files.
  4. Select items related to Windows Update (wording varies by Windows version).
  5. Click Remove files.

If you suspect a stuck update, the command-line reset section later can help.

Target the biggest offenders (apps, downloads, system caches)

Free space often returns only when you address the category that’s growing.

Uninstall large apps and games

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Sort by Size.
  3. Uninstall the largest apps you don’t need right now.

Games, creative tools, and offline media packs are frequent culprits.

Move personal files off the system drive

When C: is near full, moving libraries is one of the cleanest solutions. Do this for videos, photos, and documents.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Find Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
  3. Set new downloads, documents, and photos to a different drive (like D: or an external SSD).
  4. Move existing folders manually (e.g., Videos, Documents) to the new location.

If you store large projects (VMs, CAD files, game installs), move those first.

Check OneDrive/Sync folders and large downloads

If you use OneDrive, it may be downloading entire folders you didn’t expect. A “full disk” can happen even if you think you’re not saving locally.

  1. Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer.
  2. Look for large files marked for local availability.
  3. Right-click folders and set them to Free up space if available.

If downloads are stuck, also check browser download queues and installers waiting to complete.

Command-line recovery when the GUI doesn’t help

If Disk Cleanup and Storage pages show little change, command-line tools can target the underlying components.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Check disk usage and identify what’s filling C:

You can use Windows built-ins for visibility, then confirm with a trusted utility if needed. First, use built-in tools.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review category sizes for Apps, Temporary files, and Other.
  3. If the category totals don’t make sense, check Run > services.msc and ensure Windows Update isn’t stuck, then proceed to the update reset method below.

If you decide to use a third-party analyzer, prefer reputable tools and download only from official sources. (Examples include WinDirStat or TreeSize—verify trust before installing.)

Clean Windows component store (DISM)

This targets the WinSxS component store, which can grow over time. Use the command from an elevated terminal.

  1. Open Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
  3. If you need more aggressive cleanup, run: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Tradeoff: /ResetBase can prevent uninstalling some updates because it consolidates components. Use it only if you’re sure you won’t need rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset Windows Update components (net stop/start)

This is the go-to fix when updates are stuck and consuming disk through cached files.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run these commands in order:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc

Then rename the cache folders:

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

Finally, restart the services:

net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv

Reboot and re-check free space. After that, try Windows Update again.

Remove stale temp files (PowerShell)

If manual temp deletion is slow or interrupted, PowerShell can clear common temp locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows PowerShell as Administrator.
  2. Run:

Get-ChildItem -Path $env:TEMP -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Remove-Item -Force -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Get-ChildItem -Path C:\Windows\Temp -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Remove-Item -Force -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Skip errors are normal if files are locked. The goal is to remove what’s available.

Advanced space wins (use only if you understand the tradeoffs)

These options can reclaim meaningful space but affect recovery or system behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce System Restore usage

Restore points can consume multiple GB. If you’re at critical disk limits, reducing them may help.

  1. Press Win + R, type SystemPropertiesProtection, press Enter.
  2. Select your C: drive.
  3. Click Configure.
  4. Lower Max Usage (for example, from 10% down to 3–5%).
  5. Click Apply.

If you choose to delete restore points entirely, do it only if you accept losing rollback options.

Adjust or move the page file

The page file (pagefile.sys) is managed by Windows and can be large. Moving it to another drive can regain space on C:.

  1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
  2. Go to Advanced > Performance > Settings.
  3. Open Advanced tab.
  4. Under Virtual memory, click Change.
  5. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  6. Select C: and set No paging file or a smaller fixed size.
  7. Select another drive (like D:) and set a paging file size, then click Set.
  8. Click OK and reboot.

Gotcha: Don’t set paging file to None without ensuring you have enough RAM and stability. If unsure, set a smaller value rather than removing it completely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for hidden consumers like hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys, and reserved storage

On modern Windows installs, Reserved storage can keep several GB aside for updates. That’s not “wasted space,” but it can change what you can recover.

Also check:

  • hiberfil.sys (hibernation): disable with powercfg -h off.
  • pagefile.sys (virtual memory): move/resize via the Virtual Memory dialog.
  • System Restore usage: reduce via System Protection settings.

If the drive is still full after cleaning: troubleshooting checklist

This is the scenario most people hate: you delete files, but free space barely changes. Here’s what to try in order.

Restart and re-check free space

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Re-check File Explorer > This PC free space.

Some cleanup operations don’t finalize until the system refreshes. A reboot can also stop background processes that recreate temporary files.

Look for log files and failed updates

Windows Update failures can generate repeated caches and logs. If you see repeated update attempts, run the Windows Update reset method (the DISM and net stop/start steps) and try again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the $Recycle.Bin, Temp, and SoftwareDistribution folders

These are common large directories when space doesn’t return.

  1. Use File Explorer to view hidden folders (enable View > Show > Hidden items).
  2. Check C:\$Recycle.Bin (Recycle Bin cache).
  3. Check %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.
  4. Check %temp% and C:\Windows\Temp.

Don’t manually delete system files while Windows Update is running—use the service reset steps for best results.

Verify the filesystem isn’t corrupted

If deletion fails silently or files reappear, filesystem errors might be involved.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run: chkdsk C: /f /r
  3. Restart if prompted. This can take time.

Note: If your system is severely low on space, run chkdsk before more aggressive operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider disk health and capacity issues

On failing drives, free space can become unreliable and writes can error. If your disk is an older HDD or shows high SMART warnings (checked in tools like CrystalDiskInfo), treat it as a reliability issue—not just a cleanup problem.

Prevention: how to avoid hitting 0 bytes free again

Once you fix the immediate issue, prevent the next one. Windows needs room to update, cache, and write temporary files.

Set Storage Sense and keep it proactive

  1. Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Enable Storage Sense.
  3. Set cleanup for Temporary files and run it on a schedule (for example, weekly) if your environment allows.

Schedule cleanup for downloads and temp

Browser downloads and installer caches pile up fast. Make a weekly habit of deleting large installers, old archives, and outdated installers.

Keep Windows Update under control

If updates fail repeatedly, don’t ignore it. Repeated retries can enlarge caches. Fix update health promptly to avoid multi-gigabyte growth.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for growth: move libraries and browser cache

Move large folders (Videos, Photos, Downloads) to a non-system drive. For browsers, check settings for download location and caching behavior.

FAQs

Why does Windows say No Space Left even when File Explorer shows some free space?

Windows requires headroom for temp files, update staging, and logging. Also, some operations check write access and available contiguous space, not just the number you see in Explorer.

Is it safe to delete items in %temp% and C:\Windows\Temp?

Yes in general, but Windows may lock some files. Delete what you can and skip locked items. If you’re unsure, use Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense instead.

Will disabling hibernation with powercfg -h off break anything?

It removes hibernation support (and can reduce fast startup behavior depending on configuration). If you need hibernation, turn it back on later with powercfg -h on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use DISM cleanup if my disk is almost full?

Sometimes, but it can also fail if the system can’t write its working files. If DISM errors, do the simpler reclaim steps first (temp, downloads, Windows Update cleanup) and aim for at least a few GB free.

What if free space never increases after deletion?

Restart to refresh measurements, then check for background processes recreating files (especially Windows Update). If it still persists, inspect SoftwareDistribution and run filesystem checks (chkdsk).

Bottom Line

Fixing the No Space Left error in Windows usually comes down to reclaiming the right category of files: temp folders, Windows Update cache, and oversized apps or downloads. Start with Disk Cleanup/Storage Sense and safe temp deletions, then move to DISM and Windows Update resets if the disk still won’t recover.

If you’re repeatedly hitting full capacity, make prevention part of the solution—turn on Storage Sense, keep downloads under control, and plan library locations so C: always has at least 5–10 GB of breathing room.
