Then remove anything that may cover the phone’s microphone openings and compare a regular call with built-in recording tests. If the problem happens only in one calling app, check its microphone permission and input selection.
1. Check mute and audio routing
- Confirm the call is not muted. During the call, check that the mute button is off. If it is on, unmute and ask the other person whether they can hear you.
- Temporarily turn off Bluetooth. A connected headset, car system, or other accessory may be handling the call audio instead of the phone. Disconnect it or turn Bluetooth off, then test speakerphone again. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking connected accessories: Why can’t others hear me on my Pixel phone?
2. Check for anything covering the microphone
Remove the phone case and, if practical, any screen protector or film that could cover an opening. Inspect the microphone openings for debris. If you see an obstruction, clear the area gently without inserting a pin or other object into an opening. Test another call after removing the case or film.

3. Compare calls with recording tests
A regular call by itself does not show whether every microphone path is working. Compare the problem call with recordings made in different contexts. On iPhone, Apple recommends these tests:
- Test a call microphone: Open Voice Memos and speak toward the bottom of the phone. Play the recording back and listen for clear speech.
- Test the speakerphone-related microphone path: Record a video while speaking toward the top of the iPhone. Switch to the other camera and record another video, then play both back.
Clear recordings suggest that the tested microphone paths worked in those contexts; they do not prove that every call or app will use the same path. If recordings are unclear or silent, note which test failed when contacting support. Follow Apple’s instructions at If the microphones on your iPhone aren’t working.

4. If it happens only in an app, check its microphone settings
When ordinary phone calls work but calls in one app do not, check that app’s permission and selected input before assuming the built-in microphone is damaged. Menu labels vary by phone, operating system, and app version.
Android apps
- Open the phone’s app settings, choose the calling app, and confirm that microphone access is allowed.
- In the app’s call or audio settings, select the intended microphone or audio device if that option is available.
- Check that the app has not muted you and that the selected Bluetooth device, if any, is the one you intend to use.
For Google Meet on Android, Google also advises checking that the meeting is not in Companion mode, where the microphone and speaker are unavailable. See Fix audio issues in Google Meet – Android. Pixel users can also try closing apps, restarting the phone, and installing available app and Android updates, as described in Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance.

If you have a known-working headset or external microphone, try a call with it. If the other person can hear you through the accessory but not through the phone’s built-in microphone on speakerphone, that narrows the issue to the phone’s built-in audio path or its handling of that call. It does not identify a specific failed component or prove that the microphone needs replacement.

Check that the accessory’s connector and microphone are compatible with your phone and calls before buying one. Some Bluetooth headsets have model-specific call-routing behavior; for example, Sony’s guidance for the WF-1000XM4 concerns that headset model and should not be assumed to apply to every accessory: Sony WF-1000XM4 call audio guidance.

If the built-in microphone remains silent or unclear across calls and recording tests after you have checked mute, routing, permissions, and obstructions, contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Apple notes that service may be needed if audio remains unclear during calls, recordings, or apps. Repair options and costs depend on the phone model, country, and warranty status, so ask the manufacturer for the applicable service route.
