Those symptoms call for different tests. Compare your Mac with EA’s requirements, try Laptop Mode if appropriate, and protect your Sims 4 files before testing a reset or mods.
Identify the kind of lag before changing settings
Notice what is actually slow and when it happens. Choppy movement or delayed visuals point to a rendering problem; Sims taking a long time to complete actions is a simulation-speed complaint; a slow startup or save load is different again. A freeze, crash, or incorrectly sized window is also its own symptom. These clues help choose a test, but they do not by themselves establish a cause.

- Choppy graphics: Check your Mac’s specifications and test Laptop Mode.
- Slow simulation: Compare performance in the same save and location after each change; do not assume a display setting is the cause.
- Long loading, freezes, or crashes: Back up the game folder before testing a clean user-folder reset or investigating mods.

Check whether your Mac meets EA’s published requirements
Open Apple menu > About This Mac and note the macOS version, processor, memory, graphics information, and available storage. Compare those details with EA’s published Mac requirements for The Sims 4:

These are EA’s published specifications, not a guarantee that every qualifying Mac will run every save smoothly. If your Mac is below the listed minimum, or close to it, that is useful context—but it does not prove that hardware is the only cause. Check the exact model and available storage before deciding that an upgrade is necessary.

Try Laptop Mode on a laptop or Mac near the minimum
EA recommends trying Laptop Mode as a way to improve frame rate and efficiency, particularly on laptops. It is a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Open The Sims 4 and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Game Options.
- Check Laptop Mode, apply the change, and test the same save and location that showed the problem.
Change one setting at a time and compare what you see. If the symptom is slow simulation rather than choppy graphics, note that distinction instead of assuming Laptop Mode addressed the underlying issue.
Back up and test the Sims 4 user folder safely
A reset can help determine whether something in the game’s user folder is involved, but protect saves and other files first. Follow EA’s backup and reset instructions; do not begin by deleting saves.

- Make a separate backup copy of the Sims 4 folder and keep it somewhere safe. Do not use the only copy as your test folder.
- Use EA’s reset workflow to create a clean test state, then launch the game and check whether the same symptom occurs.
- If the clean state behaves differently, restore backed-up folders or files incrementally, launching the game after each restoration.
- When a restored item brings the issue back, you have narrowed the investigation to that item or its interaction with the game; it does not mean every save or file of that type is faulty.
Test mods and custom content separately
Mods and custom content are another possible variable. EA advises checking them if problems remain after its reset steps. With a backup in place, compare a clean, mod-free test with your usual setup. If the clean test works, reintroduce mods and custom content gradually, testing between changes. That approach can help identify a troublesome file or combination without assuming in advance that a particular mod is broken.

For a display or window problem, test windowed mode
If the issue is visual sizing, rendering, or the game window—not slow in-game time—try resizing the window or switching to windowed mode with Command + Control + F. EA cautions Retina users against changing Retina mode and resolution at the same time. Test one change at a time so you can tell what affected the display.
Do not switch the Mac game between 32-bit and 64-bit
EA states that the Mac version of The Sims 4 has always been 64-bit. Switching between 32-bit and 64-bit versions is therefore not a Mac troubleshooting step.
Use the results to choose the next step
- If Laptop Mode changes choppy graphics, keep comparing the same scene and save with that setting on and off.
- If a clean user-folder test changes the behavior, restore backed-up files gradually to narrow down what is associated with the problem.
- If the game works without mods or custom content, add them back in small groups and test after each change.
- If only the window or image sizing is wrong, focus on windowed mode and display adjustments rather than treating it as a simulation-speed diagnosis.
EA’s published guidance covers requirements, Laptop Mode, resetting and isolating user files, mods, and display adjustments. It does not establish a universal cause for every Mac lag symptom, so use the symptom and controlled comparisons to decide what your own results show.
