Then choose the right operation, wait for that state, and check for scrolling or an obstruction. A DOM match alone does not mean an element is visible or actionable.
What these Selenium errors mean
The exception name depends on the failure and the language binding. Selenium’s troubleshooting guide describes ElementNotVisibleException as an element present in the DOM but not visible. ElementNotInteractableException is broader: Selenium tried an operation that could not be performed on the element in its current state. A displayed target can also fail a click for a different reason: if another element covers the target’s center point, Selenium may raise ElementClickInterceptedException. A NoSuchElementException means the lookup did not find a match at that time.

Diagnose the failure in order
1. Confirm the page and matched element
- Check that navigation and earlier actions reached the expected page and state.
- Inspect the live DOM or use browser developer tools to verify what the locator matches.
- If the locator matches multiple nodes, narrow it to the intended actionable control. A label, wrapper, table cell, or hidden duplicate may not be the input or button you meant to use.
2. Match the operation to the control
Use send_keys for a text field or another keyboard-interactable element, and click for a control intended to receive a click. Do not send text to a nearby form, label, or container merely because it appears related in the DOM. Selenium’s interaction documentation distinguishes operations such as clicking, sending keys, clearing, submitting, and selecting.

3. Check displayed state, without treating it as a guarantee
Use the binding’s displayed-state check, such as Python’s is_displayed(), as a diagnostic. It reports Selenium’s assessment in the current browsing context; it does not guarantee that a pointer action will succeed. Selenium notes that displayed-state assessment is an approximation because the WebDriver specification does not fully define visibility. See the element information documentation.
4. Wait for the condition the next action needs
Pages can keep changing after a navigation command returns. If an input appears only after another action, wait for visibility before sending keys. If you only need to know that a node has entered the DOM, wait for presence—but remember that presence does not prove visibility or interactability.

The example uses Python; wait APIs differ across bindings. In particular, Selenium’s documentation says .NET stopped supporting its Expected Conditions classes in Selenium 4. 5. Scroll or investigate an obstruction
Selenium’s element interaction command scrolls an out-of-viewport target into view before checking interactability. If the operation still fails, check whether the element is hidden, disabled, outside the viewport, or obstructed. For a click-intercepted error, inspect the click point for a sticky navigation bar, modal, popup, or animation that is covering the target. Wait for the obstruction to clear rather than assuming the target itself is invisible.
Choose a wait strategy that fits the condition
An implicit wait applies globally to element-location calls and defaults to zero. It does not establish that a located element is displayed or appropriate for the intended operation. An explicit wait polls a chosen condition and times out if it never becomes true. Prefer an explicit wait for the state needed immediately before the action.
A fixed time.sleep() is usually a poor substitute: if the page takes longer than the chosen delay, the failure remains; if it takes less time, the test waits unnecessarily. Selenium also warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits because the resulting total timing can be unpredictable. The 10-second timeout in the code above is an example value, not a universal recommendation; choose a timeout appropriate to your application and test environment.
