If that does not work, check compatibility, network conditions, software updates, and whether the content is protected.
First, identify what you mean by casting
Samsung uses Smart View for mirroring a Galaxy phone’s screen. Casting from a video or music app is a separate process: open a cast-enabled app and use its cast control, whose location varies by app. A TV can be available to an app even when Smart View is not working, so troubleshoot the method you actually want to use. Samsung explains both workflows in its screen-mirroring guide.

- To mirror everything on the phone: Open Smart View from the Galaxy Quick Panel, choose the TV, and respond to any permission or PIN prompt.
- To play one app’s content on the TV: Use that app’s cast control and follow its connection steps.
Work through the Smart View checks in order
1. Make sure the TV is on and discoverable
Turn on the TV, open Smart View on the phone, and look for the TV in the available-device list. If it is missing, refresh the list. Samsung’s mirroring instructions describe selecting the TV from Smart View.
2. Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network
Check the network name shown on the phone and TV; they should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for Smart View discovery and mirroring. A TV connected to a guest network or a different router network may not appear. Samsung lists network mismatch among the issues to check in its Smart View and screen-mirroring troubleshooting guidance.

3. Approve the TV’s connection request
After selecting the TV, watch its screen for a permission request and accept it. Some setups ask for a PIN. If the TV rejects or blocks the connection, check its connection and external-device permission settings; the exact menu names depend on the TV model.
4. Verify that both models support the method
Smart View is not available on every phone or receiver. Samsung’s documented workflow requires compatible screen-mirroring support, including Miracast capability. Check the exact Galaxy and TV or receiver model rather than assuming that any smart TV works with any Galaxy phone. Samsung notes that availability varies by device in its Smart View connection guidance.

5. Check for network instability or a VPN-related error
An unstable connection can interrupt Smart View. If the phone reports a VPN setting error, Samsung advises disconnecting from the VPN and trying again. If the devices are on the same Wi-Fi but discovery or playback remains unreliable, restore a stable network connection before changing other settings.
6. Update and restart the phone and TV
Install available software updates for both devices, then restart them and try Smart View again. Samsung includes outdated software and temporary device issues among the causes these steps can address. TV update menus differ by model, so follow the instructions for that set.

7. Check whether only a particular video is blocked
Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be mirrored through Smart View. If the phone’s other screens mirror successfully but one protected video does not, the connection may be working as intended. Use the content provider’s supported TV app or its supported casting method, if available.

Samsung identifies a Chromecast device or an HDMI adaptor as possible ways to connect a phone to a non-smart TV. They are not interchangeable: Chromecast is for casting from compatible apps, while HDMI is a wired option only when the particular phone supports video output through its connector and the adaptor is suitable. Samsung’s general guidance does not establish wired video-output compatibility for every Galaxy model, so verify the phone model, connector, and adaptor requirements before buying anything.

If the connection still fails
A factory reset is not the logical first step: Samsung’s guidance prioritizes network, permissions, compatibility, software updates, and restarting. If those checks do not resolve unusual device behavior, Samsung’s UK guidance points to sending an error report through Samsung Members.
Samsung’s troubleshooting pages cover different regions and model generations, and do not establish a universal compatibility list or a tested success rate. Feature availability, menu labels, and supported devices can vary by Galaxy model, TV model, software version, and region.
