When Roku refuses to add a channel, it’s usually not a “bad app”—it’s a device, account, store, or network state that prevents the channel from completing the add process.
This guide walks you through 7 fixes that work in 2024, in the order you should try them. If you want the fastest path, start with Fix 1 and move down until the channel installs.

In other cases, the channel is missing from search, the install button is greyed out, or Roku keeps restarting the add process without finishing.
Before you start: quick checks that prevent wasted time
These take under a minute and remove a lot of guesswork.
- Confirm the channel name exactly: Search using the exact brand name (e.g., Netflix, Max, YouTube) and avoid alternate spellings.
- Check whether the channel is supported in your region: Some channels vary by country. If the channel is not available where you are, Roku won’t add it.
- Use a stable connection: If your Wi‑Fi is unstable, installs can fail mid-process. If possible, switch to Ethernet for testing.
- Don’t install on multiple devices at once: If you’re using the same Roku account on multiple TVs/boxes, try adding on just one device first.
Fix 1: Restart everything the right way (Roku + router)
A “simple restart” sometimes isn’t enough because the network session that the channel store relies on can remain stuck. A full power cycle forces fresh connections.
Recommended Free Tools
- Unplug your Roku from power.
- Unplug your router (and modem, if separate) from power.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug in the modem first and wait until it’s fully online (usually 2–3 minutes).
- Plug in the router and wait until Wi‑Fi is stable (often 2–3 minutes).
- Plug in your Roku and power it on.
- After it finishes booting, go to Streaming Channels and try adding the channel again.
If your channel installs after this, the issue was a stale connection or store session.
Fix 2: Check for Roku software updates
Roku updates frequently include fixes for channel store reliability and network communication. If your device is behind, installs may fail.
- On your Roku remote, press Home.
- Select Settings > System > System update.
- Select Check now.
- If an update is available, install it and reboot.
- Try adding the channel again.
If you see updates stuck at downloading, also restart the Roku + router (Fix 1) and try again.
Fix 3: Verify your Roku account and channel availability
Sometimes the channel store install is blocked because the channel is restricted for your Roku account or Roku device model, or because you’re signed into the wrong account.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- On the Roku, press Home > Settings.
- Select System > About and note your device model (and software version if shown).
- Confirm the account that’s signed in on Roku matches the one you use to purchase/add channels.
- In a browser, go to the Roku account page and check your Roku devices and subscription status.
- Try adding the channel again on the Roku device that’s actually linked to the account.
If the channel is “paid” or requires a subscription, ensure you completed the checkout step (or the free trial step) on the correct account.
Fix 4: Re-try the channel from the Roku channel store
Some channel additions fail due to a temporary store glitch. Retrying through the store (instead of repeating from an old link or history screen) often works.
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Select Streaming Channels.
- Use search and enter the channel name.
- Select the channel and choose Add channel (or Install if that’s the button you see).
- Wait for the install to finish.
- Return to the home screen and check for the new channel icon.
If it still won’t add, keep going. Don’t repeatedly click “Add channel” dozens of times—this can extend the stuck state.
Fix 5: Fix network issues (Wi‑Fi vs Ethernet, DNS, DNS blocking)
Channel installation needs to contact Roku services and the channel’s servers. If your network uses strict filtering, blocks certain domains, or DNS is misconfigured, installs fail.

Try Ethernet (fastest network truth test)
If you have an Ethernet port available, temporarily connect Roku using Ethernet. If the channel installs on Ethernet, your Wi‑Fi (or Wi‑Fi router settings) is the problem.
- Connect Roku to Ethernet.
- Let the device reboot network connection (or restart Roku once).
- Attempt to add the channel again.
Switch to a different Wi‑Fi network
Use your phone’s hotspot (or a different home Wi‑Fi) to confirm whether Roku can install channels on a cleaner network path.
- Press Home > Settings > Network.
- Select Set up connection.
- Choose a different Wi‑Fi network.
- Try adding the channel again.
Check for ad-blockers or DNS filtering
If your router or network uses custom DNS, Pi-hole, NextDNS, AdGuard Home, or “security” filtering, it can block Roku channel install endpoints.

- Temporarily disable DNS filtering for your Roku device MAC address (best) or disable it globally (test only).
- Retry the channel add.
- If it works, re-enable filtering and add exclusions for Roku streaming/channel domains as your network tool allows.
Exact domains can vary, so the practical approach is to test by disabling filters, then narrow down with your DNS tool logs.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 6: Clear the Roku Store cache and refresh the device
Roku doesn’t always expose a “clear cache” button for channel installs, but you can force the device to reset store-related data and restart the app store process.
Refresh the system by restarting Roku
Before you go deeper, do a restart from Roku’s menu (this is not the same as a router power cycle).
- Press Home.
- Select Settings > System.
- Select Power > System restart.
- After reboot, try adding the channel again.
Clear the Roku Store (practical reset path)
If your Roku model/menu shows store reset options, use them. If your device doesn’t show a direct “clear store cache” control, the next best step is a guided restart and (if needed) a factory reset (Fix 7).
- Go to Settings > System.
- Look for options such as Advanced system settings or Storage (wording varies by Roku OS version).
- If a store/app cache clearing option exists, run it.
- Retry the channel installation.
Because Roku UI text varies by device generation, if you don’t see these controls, don’t force it—use Fix 7 after you’ve tried the other fixes.
Fix 7: Factory reset (only if the channel still won’t add)
A factory reset is the nuclear option, but it’s effective when the device’s system state or channel database is corrupted. Only do this after Fix 1–6.
Before you reset, make sure you know your Wi‑Fi credentials and that the Roku account is accessible (you may be asked to sign in again).

- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Select Settings > System.
- Select Advanced system settings.
- Select Factory reset.
- Confirm the reset when prompted.
- Set up Roku again (network, preferences, and account).
- After setup, try adding the channel from Streaming Channels.
If the channel adds after reset, you’ve confirmed the previous install database or store state was the issue.
Alternatives when the channel won’t show up
If the channel doesn’t appear in search or keeps failing at install, try these alternatives. They often reveal whether the issue is availability, not installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a web browser to manage channels
Some Roku channel management steps can be initiated from your Roku account dashboard. If the channel shows as addable online but not on-device, it points back to network/device state.
- Sign into your Roku account in a browser.
- Go to your device/account channel list.
- Try adding the channel to the correct Roku device.
- Then restart Roku and check Home for the icon.
Try installing after removing the channel (if it partially exists)
If the channel appears to be “there” but won’t open or keeps looping, remove it and reinstall.
- On Roku Home, highlight the channel.
- Press * (star button) on the remote.
- Select Remove channel.
- Restart Roku.
- Reinstall from Streaming Channels.
Confirm you’re not out of device capacity
While Roku generally handles storage well, overloaded or near-full storage can cause app-related issues on some models.
- Go to Settings > System > Storage.
- Remove apps you don’t need.
- Attempt to add the channel again.
Common errors and what to do next
These are frequent symptoms and the best immediate response.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Try this first |
|---|---|---|
| Channel add button does nothing | Store session stuck | Fix 1, then Fix 4 |
| Install starts but never finishes | Network/DNS blocking | Fix 5 (Ethernet or hotspot test) |
| Channel doesn’t appear in search | Region/device availability or typo | Verify exact name + region (prereqs), then Fix 3 |
| Channel installs on one Roku but not another | Device-specific state | Fix 2 and Fix 6; then Fix 7 if needed |
| Paid channel prompts but won’t complete | Account mismatch or billing hold | Fix 3, then retry install from store |
FAQ
How long should Roku take to add a channel?
Most channel installs complete within a minute or two on a stable connection. If it hasn’t finished after 5–10 minutes, stop and do Fix 1 (power cycle) before retrying.

Why does Roku say the channel installed but I can’t find it?
Check the Home screen rows and also wait a minute after install. If it still doesn’t show, restart Roku (Fix 1 or Fix 6), then reinstall from Streaming Channels.
Does a Roku factory reset delete my purchased channels?
Purchased/free channels linked to your Roku account generally come back when you sign in again. However, you may need to re-add channels depending on how they were obtained. Fix 7 is still the last resort because it requires re-setup.
Can I fix Roku not adding channels without factory reset?
Yes—most cases resolve with the network reset (Fix 1 + Fix 5), a software update (Fix 2), or re-trying the install from the Roku Channel Store (Fix 4). Factory reset is mainly for persistent store/database issues.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What Roku models are most affected?
No single model is guaranteed, but older Roku devices with older software builds or marginal Wi‑Fi performance can show more channel-store install problems. Fix 2 and Fix 5 are the most consistent remedies.
Bottom Line
If Roku isn’t adding channels, treat it like a system-state problem first (restart + update), then move to account/store behavior, and finally isolate network/DNS issues. That order solves the majority of “can’t install” cases in 2024.
If the channel still won’t add after Fix 1–6, a factory reset (Fix 7) is the most decisive option—just do it after confirming your Wi‑Fi and account details are ready.
