Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Realtek Digital Output is selected but you hear nothing, first confirm Windows is sending audio to the device actually connected to your speakers or receiver. Then check the signal path and volume, inspect the audio device and driver, and use update-specific recovery only if the problem began after an update. A Realtek entry in Windows does not by itself prove that it is the active or physically connected output.
Check the selected output and volume first
In Windows 10 or 11, open the taskbar sound control or go to Settings > System > Sound and select the output connected to the speakers, headphones, receiver, or decoder you intend to use. If several outputs appear, do not assume the one named “Realtek Digital Output” is the right one: choose the endpoint that matches your connection. Microsoft recommends checking the selected output, connections, and volume as initial troubleshooting steps (Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide).

- Make sure system volume is not muted and is turned up.
- Check the affected app’s own volume and output settings if only one app is silent.
- Confirm that the receiver or speaker system is powered on and set to the input connected to the PC.
Identify the connection: optical, other digital, or analog
“Realtek Digital Output” may serve a digital audio path such as optical S/PDIF. The correct checks depend on how the PC is connected; analog speakers plugged into a line-out jack may need a different playback endpoint than a receiver connected through optical output.
For optical S/PDIF
Check that the PC or motherboard has an optical output and the receiver or decoder has a matching optical input. Confirm the cable is present, seated at both ends, and that the receiving device is set to that input. GIGABYTE’s S/PDIF instructions describe connecting an optical cable from the motherboard to an external decoder; this is a model-specific example, not proof that every Realtek system has optical ports (GIGABYTE S/PDIF configuration guide). Replace or try an optical S/PDIF (TOSLINK) cable only if both devices have compatible optical ports and the existing cable is missing or suspect. A cable will not fix a wrong Windows output selection or a driver fault.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
For analog speakers or another digital connection
Verify that the speakers or headphones are connected to the intended PC jack or supported digital interface, and select the corresponding playback endpoint in Windows. Also check the receiving device’s input selection. Connector availability, supported formats, and endpoint names vary by PC, motherboard, driver, and receiver.
Check the output format only if the connection requires it
Some Realtek driver packages expose a Default Format control in the playback device’s properties. GIGABYTE documents setting sample rate and bit depth for Realtek Digital Output, but the available choices and compatible formats depend on the hardware and driver. If the receiver does not accept the selected format, try a format it supports rather than assuming one sample rate or bit depth is best for every setup.

Realtek Digital Output missing or not working: inspect Windows detection
If the endpoint is absent, or its status suggests a device problem, check Device Manager before downloading software. Microsoft lists missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading drivers among possible reasons Windows may not detect an audio output (Microsoft’s guide to missing or undetected audio outputs).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the relevant audio device appears, open its properties and check whether it is disabled or reports an error. If an enable option is available, enable it.
- If the device is not listed, choose View > Show hidden devices, then use Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- If Windows still does not detect it, identify the exact PC or motherboard model and Windows version, then obtain the audio driver from that manufacturer’s official support page. Install the package intended for that model and Windows version, and restart Windows.
Do not assume that an arbitrary Realtek driver package will match your PC: manufacturers may customize driver packages and supporting utilities. MSI’s instructions for one MEG Z590 ACE configuration, for example, also check the Realtek device status, Realtek Audio Console, port detection, playback selection, and connected audio equipment; its BIOS and software steps should not be treated as universal instructions (MSI’s external audio troubleshooting instructions).

Realtek Digital Output missing after a Windows update
If the failure began immediately after Windows Update or a driver change, treat driver compatibility or an incomplete installation as plausible causes. Microsoft recommends checking for a driver update and, when available, rolling back to the previous driver version (Microsoft’s update-related audio troubleshooting guide).
- Check the support page for the exact PC or motherboard for a newer audio driver intended for your Windows version. Install it and restart.
- If the issue started with a recent driver and Device Manager offers Roll Back Driver for the audio device, use that option and restart. It may restore a previously working version; the option is not available on every system.
- If the driver appears present but audio services did not start correctly, open the Services app and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. Then test the selected output again.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. That support date does not determine whether a particular PC’s audio driver works, but it matters when checking which Windows version the PC manufacturer supports (Microsoft).

Separate a PC problem from a receiver, speaker, or port problem
Once Windows routing and detection have been checked, cross-test the equipment: play audio from another source through the receiver or speakers, or connect another compatible device to the PC output. If the alternate source also fails on the receiver, investigate its input, power, or cabling. If the PC output fails with another compatible device while that device works elsewhere, the PC’s driver, port, or audio hardware is more likely involved.
Only check a BIOS audio-controller setting if the instructions for the exact motherboard support doing so. Menu names and paths differ by model; do not copy a BIOS path from a different board. MSI’s example includes checking its board’s HD Audio Controller, but that is specific to its documented configuration. If the model-specific checks do not resolve the issue, the manufacturer can advise whether service inspection is appropriate.
