For a PS4 Safe Mode update, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, create PS4/UPDATE, and place Sony’s official update file there as PS4UPDATE.PUP. In Safe Mode, choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Do not choose the reinstall option unless you intend to erase the console.
Prepare the USB drive and update file

UPDATEfolder with the exact namePS4UPDATE.PUP.
Sony Interactive Entertainment warns: “Do not download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

Install the update from Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS4 completely.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the USB drive, then select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Sony’s Safe Mode system software instructions cover this USB update route. It updates the existing system software; it is not the reinstall procedure described below.

Both procedures use the general PS4/UPDATE folder structure and PS4UPDATE.PUP filename, but they require different downloads. For routine updating, use the update file—not the reinstallation file. Sony’s PS4 system software instructions distinguish the downloads and options; its reinstallation instructions warn that reinstalling deletes all console data. Back up data when possible before taking that step.

If the PS4 does not recognize the update file
Check these details before trying another download:
- Drive format: It must be FAT32 or exFAT.
- Folder path: The file must be inside
PS4/UPDATEat the USB drive’s top level. - Names: Use the uppercase folder names
PS4andUPDATE, and the exact filenamePS4UPDATE.PUP. - File choice and source: Use the official update file for an ordinary update, or the separate reinstallation file only if you are following the reinstall procedure. Do not use update data from another source.
If the update still fails
For error SU-30696-4, Sony’s PS4 error-code guidance suggests trying an internet update if possible, downloading the latest file again, and then attempting the Safe Mode update. If the manual update still fails, Sony says a system software reinstallation may be needed; that procedure deletes all console data, so treat it as a last resort and back up data when possible.
