Playwright’s fullPage: true captures the page’s full scrollable extent; it does not guarantee that every lazy-loaded image has been requested and rendered. Scroll through the sections you need in bounded steps, wait for and verify the expected images, then take the screenshot. For pages that keep adding content as you scroll, set a clear stopping boundary rather than relying on a stable bottom.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss images
A full-page screenshot controls the capture area, not the readiness of every offscreen resource. Playwright describes it as a screenshot of the full scrollable page, as if the page fit on a very tall screen. That is different from triggering every site’s deferred-loading behavior. Playwright’s Page API documents the screenshot options.

With native loading="lazy", the browser defers fetching an image until it reaches a browser-calculated distance from the viewport. The browser controls that distance. Images may therefore begin loading only after scrolling brings them near view, and they may not delay the window load event. A completed navigation or load event alone does not prove that offscreen images are ready. See MDN’s <img> reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNearly 1 in 10 pages with image-based largest contentful paint used native loading="lazy", according to the HTTP Archive’s 2022 Web Almanac. That finding applies to pages with image-based LCP; it is not a rate for all pages or all images. HTTP Archive 2022 Web Almanac.

Use a bounded scroll-and-verify workflow
- Set the comparison state. Navigate to the competitor URL and establish the viewport, browser context, and page state you intend to compare. Use the same conditions across captures when consistency matters.
- Scroll through the region you need. Move down in bounded increments, pausing as needed for deferred requests and rendering. Scrolling brings native lazy-loaded images nearer the viewport; JavaScript-driven loading may also react to scrolling. There is no universal increment or wait duration that works for every site.
- Check the expected images. Inspect the specific image elements you care about. An image’s Boolean
completeproperty indicates whether loading has finished, but a completed image could have failed; when successful content matters, also check that it has usable content such as a positivenaturalWidth. MDN documents the image completion property and lazy-loading behavior; checking natural dimensions is practical verification, not a Playwright guarantee. - Return to the capture position if needed. If the desired image should start at the top, scroll back to the top after triggering and checking the content.
- Capture the intended extent. Use a viewport screenshot for a fixed visible region or a full-page screenshot for the full scrollable document. Playwright’s Screenshots guide shows the full-page option.
- Define an endpoint for infinite scroll. Stop at a named section, item count, or other reproducible boundary. Continuously loading pages may not have a stable natural bottom.
Runnable Playwright example
This Node.js example scrolls to the current document bottom in bounded increments, waits for images to finish or fail, verifies that expected images have usable dimensions, returns to the top, and saves a full-page screenshot. Change the URL, viewport, expected image selector, step size, and timeout to match the pages you compare.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com/competitor-page', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Scroll through the current document in bounded steps. This triggers
// viewport-proximity and scroll-driven loading without assuming a fixed wait.
let previousHeight = 0;
while (true) {
const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += 700) {
await page.evaluate((top) => window.scrollTo(0, top), y);
await page.waitForTimeout(250);
}
await page.waitForTimeout(500);
const newHeight = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
if (newHeight <= height || newHeight === previousHeight) break;
previousHeight = height;
}
// Replace this selector with the image(s) required for your comparison.
const selector = 'img.competitor-hero';
await page.locator(selector).evaluateAll((images) => Promise.all(images.map((img) => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise((resolve) => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
});
})));
const imageStates = await page.locator(selector).evaluateAll((images) =>
images.map((img) => ({ src: img.currentSrc || img.src, complete: img.complete, naturalWidth: img.naturalWidth }))
);
const missing = imageStates.filter((img) => !img.complete || img.naturalWidth <= 0);
if (missing.length) throw new Error(`Expected images not usable: ${JSON.stringify(missing)}`);
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, 0));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'competitor.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The loop above handles document growth only while the measured page height changes; it cannot decide when an infinite-scroll page is semantically complete. For an unbounded feed, replace the loop’s stopping rule with a known section or item-count boundary. The 250 ms and 500 ms pauses are configurable examples, not universal loading guarantees. If the screenshot must include all images rather than a selected set, query the relevant image elements and apply the same completion and usable-dimension checks to them.

Choose viewport or full-page capture deliberately
| Capture | Coverage | Best fit | Readiness concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The currently visible screen | Consistent snapshots of a specific section at a fixed scroll position | Scroll to the intended position and confirm its content is rendered. |
| Full page | The scrollable document as one tall image | A whole-document record after triggering the needed deferred content | Asynchronous content or infinite scroll can change the document extent around capture time. |
For test readiness, Playwright discourages relying on networkidle and recommends web assertions. A quiet network is not proof that a particular image is present; assert the image or page condition relevant to the comparison instead. See Playwright’s Page API.

- The image is incomplete after scrolling: Confirm the selector identifies the intended image, then wait for its load or error outcome and inspect its final state.
- The image is complete but blank or broken: Check
naturalWidth(and, where useful,currentSrc) rather than treatingcompletealone as proof of success. - Scrolling does not trigger it: Inspect whether the page uses native
loading="lazy", a JavaScript observer, a data attribute swapped on scroll, a carousel, or a nested scrolling container. These are diagnostic possibilities; behavior differs by site. - The page keeps growing: Set a content boundary or item limit and capture that defined region. Do not wait for a natural bottom that may never arrive.
- Requests fail or content is inaccessible: Check the image URL and browser/network errors. Waiting longer cannot make an inaccessible or failed resource render successfully.
- The screenshot is still inconsistent: Keep viewport, scroll boundary, readiness assertion, and capture mode fixed across runs. Avoid treating navigation completion or network quiet as a substitute for verifying the target image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. For a full-page capture after lazy images load, its full-page option loads lazy images. The API also offers selector-based element capture and configurable waits; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request parameters.

Does scrolling guarantee that every image on a page will load?
No. A page may use custom JavaScript, nested scrollers, carousels, or failed image requests. Verify the specific images required for your capture.
What does an image’s complete property tell me?
It indicates that loading has finished, not necessarily that the image loaded successfully. Check for usable content, such as a positive naturalWidth, when success matters.

What is the HTTP Archive’s lazy-loading statistic measuring?
Its 2022 figure—nearly 1 in 10—was for pages whose largest contentful paint was image-based, not for all pages or all images.
