If a Playwright screenshot times out, first check which operation actually hit its limit: navigation, page.screenshot(), or the overall test. They have separate timeout scopes. The Page API gives page.screenshot() its own timeout option, whose default is 0 (no timeout); increasing a navigation timeout will not change that screenshot setting. Playwright Page API
Identify which timeout is firing
Read the operation named in the error and, where available, inspect the trace. A longer timeout helps only if the failing operation is reaching a limit that you intend to extend. It will not make an unresponsive browser, failed request, or page that never reaches the expected state work.

Set a timeout for the screenshot call
For a per-capture limit, pass timeout directly to page.screenshot():

Choose a limit that suits your environment, then investigate if capture still fails. Separate navigation from page readiness
Navigation waiting and screenshot capture are distinct. Select a navigation milestone that fits the page, then wait for an observable condition that proves the content you need is ready.
commit: the response is received and document loading begins.domcontentloaded: the DOM content-loaded event has fired.load: the page’s load event has fired.networkidle: there have been no network connections for at least 500 ms. Playwright discourages using this as a test readiness signal; prefer an assertion or page-specific condition. Page API and Frame API
For a client-rendered page, the DOM event alone may not mean the application has rendered the content you want. Wait for a stable locator or state specific to that page. Replace the example locator below with one that is present when your target content is ready:

By default, fullPage is false. Set it to true only when you need the full scrollable page. The API’s scale: 'css' option produces one pixel per CSS pixel and keeps high-DPI screenshots smaller. These options may reduce unnecessary output, but the documentation does not establish either as a guaranteed timeout fix. Page API

- The error names navigation. Adjust the navigation wait or timeout, and check whether the selected
waitUntilevent suits the page. Do not assume this changes the screenshot timeout. - The error names
page.screenshot(). Set or inspect its per-call timeout. If you changed a page or context default, confirm that the intended setting applies. - The runner reports a test timeout. Inspect the Playwright Test timeout separately; extending an individual action does not necessarily extend the test’s overall limit.
- The page loads but the target content is missing. Wait for a page-specific visible element or application state before capturing, rather than relying only on a navigation event.
- The test uses
waitForTimeout()ornetworkidleas a general fix. Replace timer-based waiting with an observable readiness condition. Playwright sayswaitForTimeout()should be used only for debugging because timer-based tests are flaky, and discouragesnetworkidlefor tests. Page API - The screenshot is larger than needed. Consider whether you need
fullPage: trueor a high-DPI output, and usescale: 'css'if CSS-pixel output is sufficient. These choices are not guaranteed to resolve a timeout.
When investigating, change one scope at a time and use the error or trace to verify that you are addressing the operation that failed. A longer limit can accommodate slow but valid work; it cannot repair a page that never becomes ready.

How do I increase the Playwright screenshot timeout?
Pass a finite timeout value to page.screenshot(), such as timeout: 30_000. That value is an example, not a universal recommendation.
