Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe “Operating System Not Found” message does not necessarily mean Windows has been erased. First check whether BIOS/UEFI detects the internal drive and whether the PC is trying to boot from the right device. If the drive is visible, use Windows recovery media and follow the repair steps for its partition style—MBR or GPT. If firmware cannot see the drive or diagnostics indicate failure, stop before changing partitions or boot records and prioritize hardware diagnosis and data recovery.
What “Operating System Not Found” means
Windows has not started because the PC cannot locate a usable operating system at boot. Possible causes include an internal drive that firmware does not detect, physical drive damage, a corrupted Master Boot Record (MBR), or an inactive system partition. The message alone does not establish which cause applies.

Microsoft’s documented procedure addresses the related message “An operating system wasn’t found. Try disconnecting any drives that don’t contain an operating system.” Its MBR/GPT repair instructions apply to Windows 10; they are not a universal command recipe for every Windows version or manufacturer’s setup. Microsoft’s instructions for the error should be followed with care.
Check boot selection and drive detection first
- Disconnect unnecessary removable storage. Unplug external drives, memory cards, and USB storage that are not needed to start the PC. Leave recovery media disconnected for this first check.
- Open BIOS/UEFI setup. Restart and use the key specified by the computer maker. The key and menu names vary by model, so consult the device manual if needed.
- Confirm the internal drive appears. Look in the firmware’s storage or device information screen. Then check that the intended Windows boot device is selected in the boot order.
Microsoft support guidance also recommends checking whether the disk is detected and verifying boot order. These are initial checks, not proof that a detected drive is healthy. Microsoft Q&A: “Error: Operating System not found”

If the drive is missing or may be failing
If the internal drive does not appear in BIOS/UEFI, or the computer’s hardware diagnostics report a failure, stop before changing partition flags or rebuilding boot files. Software repair cannot fix an underlying drive-detection or physical fault, and repeated writes to a failing drive may complicate recovery.
- Seek model-specific hardware diagnosis. If important files are on the drive, make data preservation or recovery the priority before attempting repairs that write to it.
- Replace storage only after failure is confirmed. The compatible drive depends on the computer’s form factor and interface; check the model’s service documentation or get qualified help before choosing a replacement.

If the drive is detected, use Windows recovery tools
Start with Startup Repair when available
Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair before manual boot-file commands. The exact route to recovery tools varies by Windows version and PC. This support-guided option can diagnose and attempt to repair startup problems; it does not guarantee a fix or that files will be preserved.

If you cannot reach WinRE on the affected PC, use Windows bootable USB or DVD media created on another working computer. Choose the repair tools and Command Prompt rather than starting a clean installation. Microsoft’s error article describes using bootable Windows 7, 8, or 10 media to access Command Prompt, but its MBR/GPT repair sequence is specifically for Windows 10. Its page also links to instructions for creating installation media.

Identify the Windows partition and choose the right repair branch
Do not assume the Windows partition is C: in the recovery environment. Drive letters can change outside normal Windows. Microsoft’s procedure directs users to find the partition containing the Windows directory, then identify the system partition and follow the matching MBR or GPT instructions.

- In Command Prompt, use DiskPart and run
list diskto inspect the disks. In Microsoft’s instructions, an asterisk in the GPT column indicates a GPT disk; no asterisk indicates MBR. - Identify the volume containing the Windows folder and the system partition. Verify the disk and partitions before running commands; selecting the wrong volume can make recovery harder.
- Follow Microsoft’s separate procedure for the detected partition style, then restart and test booting.
MBR
The MBR branch includes setting the appropriate system volume active and rebuilding boot files. Do not mark a partition active unless you have positively identified the correct system volume and confirmed that this MBR procedure matches the PC’s layout.

The GPT branch identifies the EFI System partition and uses an EFI-specific boot-file procedure. Do not apply MBR-specific partition steps to a GPT/UEFI system. Use the exact commands and identification steps in Microsoft’s Windows 10 instructions for the matching layout rather than treating a generic bootrec sequence as universal.

When to stop troubleshooting
- The drive is absent from BIOS/UEFI.
- Built-in hardware diagnostics report a storage failure.
- You suspect physical damage or the drive shows signs of failure.
- You cannot confidently distinguish the Windows partition from the system or EFI partition.
In these cases, get model-specific hardware help instead of repeating boot commands. If the drive has failed, a compatible replacement SSD or HDD may be needed, but confirm the computer’s form factor and interface first. Protect important data before any repair attempt that could write to the disk.
