If OBS stops after the last study video, first identify the source in the Sources list. For one file in a Media Source, open its properties and enable Loop. For a playlist in a VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist. These are separate controls, and their defaults differ, so check the actual settings rather than relying on what OBS normally selects.
Find out whether OBS is playing one file or a playlist
OBS has two relevant source types, with different repeat settings. A single video loaded as a Media Source uses Loop; a multi-file VLC Video source uses Loop Playlist. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation says Media Source Loop is off by default and VLC Video Loop Playlist is on by default. Your installed version or source configuration may differ, so inspect the source itself.

- In OBS, look in the Sources list for the item that plays the study video.
- Open that source’s properties and determine whether it is a Media Source or VLC Video.
- Use the matching loop control below, then test playback through the last item or to the end of the file.
Repeat a single video with Media Source
- In the Sources list, select the Media Source containing the video.
- Open its properties.
- Enable Loop, then apply the change.
- Test the source to confirm it starts again when the file reaches its end.
Show nothing when playback ends is not a repeat setting. OBS documents it as an option to hide the source after the file finishes. If the source disappears at the end instead of replaying, check Loop separately.
Repeat a playlist with VLC Video
- In the Sources list, select the VLC Video source that contains the playlist.
- Open its properties and check that the intended files are in the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then apply the change.
- Let the final playlist item finish and verify that playback returns to the beginning.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s documentation notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the VLC Video source is unavailable or does not work, check that both programs are installed and that their architectures match.

Check what happens when the source is hidden
If playback stops, resets, or resumes unexpectedly when OBS changes scenes, inspect the VLC Video source’s Visibility Behaviour setting. OBS documents three behaviors:
- Stop when not visible, restart when visible: playback stops while the source is hidden and starts over when it appears.
- Pause when not visible, resume when visible: playback pauses while hidden and continues when the source becomes visible again.
- Always play even when not visible: playback continues through scene changes while the source is hidden.
Choose the behavior that fits how your scenes are meant to work, then reproduce the scene transition that triggers the problem. If the stream changes scenes while a video should continue uninterrupted, test the always-play behavior.

Decide whether the playlist should loop or stop after each video
Looping a playlist and switching scenes after each individual video are different goals. Loop Playlist makes the playlist start over after it runs out; it does not create a scheduled pause between items. If you want OBS to pause after each study video and switch scenes, you need separate automation.
In a 2023 OBS forum discussion, a user described using Advanced Scene Switcher to switch scenes when the current item had less than one second remaining, with the VLC source set to pause when inactive and resume when active. The user also reported that pause behavior sometimes failed, so treat this as a workaround to test—not a guaranteed fix. See the OBS forum discussion about scheduling VLC media files.

A separate Advanced Scene Switcher discussion notes that an endlessly looping VLC playlist will not reach a playlist-ended state. Its participant describes using the time remaining in the current item to detect an approaching item end instead. - It is a single file, but the source ends: confirm it is a Media Source and that Loop is enabled. Do not mistake Show nothing when playback ends for a loop control.
- The final playlist item ends and nothing plays: confirm it is a VLC Video source and that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The problem appears during a scene change: check VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour and test the setting appropriate to hidden sources.
- VLC Video is missing or unavailable: confirm VLC is installed and, for 64-bit OBS, that 64-bit VLC is installed.
- An automation rule never detects the playlist ending: if the playlist loops continuously, do not rely on a playlist-ended state. Test remaining-time detection for the current item instead.
- The fault is inconsistent: reproduce it with the same source, loop setting, and scene transitions. The correct cause depends on your OBS version, operating system, source configuration, and the exact point at which playback stops.
OBS lists supported Media Source video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV in its Media Sources documentation. If a file will not play at all, confirm its format is supported there.
