Fix OBS Stopping a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS stops carrying your 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify where it failed: OBS may still be open but losing its connection, the encoder may be struggling, or YouTube may have stopped accepting the feed. Check OBS’s status and counters and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message before changing settings. The symptom alone does not identify the cause.

First identify what “stopping” means

At the next interruption, record the time and capture the state before restarting OBS. Preserve the OBS log from around the failure; it can help distinguish a network disconnect from an encoder or startup error.

  • OBS is open, but dropped frames are rising or it reports a disconnect: investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
  • The picture or sound is poor, OBS reports encoder trouble, or CPU load is high: investigate encoder load, sources, and audio/video routing.
  • YouTube Live Control Room reports a stream-health or encoder error: use that message alongside OBS’s status. If the error occurs at startup, check the current stream key and encoder settings.

OBS says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Dropped frames generally point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, but that does not explain every kind of interruption. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide describes the dropped-frame issue; YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking stream health, encoder errors, CPU load, and the encoder’s output.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects

Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity

Run an upload speed test and compare the stream’s configured bitrate with the stable outbound capacity available while streaming. An advertised internet-plan speed is not proof that the connection can sustain that rate continuously. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a universal formula. Leave headroom for network variation and other traffic.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower it and monitor whether dropped frames stop increasing. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance gives these ranges: 1080p at 30 fps has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; 1080p at 60 fps has a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. The appropriate choice depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; YouTube’s recommendations also differ for AV1 and H.265. Do not select a bitrate from resolution alone. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the relevant codec and settings.

Test the network path, one change at a time

  1. If you use Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS cautions that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Compare stream behavior on a wired connection before changing other variables.
  2. Check security and network software. Temporarily isolate a VPN, firewall, antivirus, or bundled network-optimization utility as a diagnostic test. Do not leave protection disabled. If a security product is confirmed to interfere, re-enable it and add an OBS exception according to the vendor’s instructions.
  3. Check drivers and equipment. Review network-driver updates from the computer or motherboard manufacturer, then inspect the router or modem, cables, and other network hardware. Avoid replacing equipment before these checks point to it.
  4. Ask the ISP if local checks do not help. Route congestion or provider-side changes can be outside your control; OBS advises contacting the internet service provider in that situation.

On Windows, OBS documents Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as settings some users report helpful; they are not guaranteed fixes. Its guide recommends leaving Bind to IP at Default. If changing it to IPv4-only makes no difference, return it to the default. The guide also describes Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment as a Beta option: it can lower quality to adapt to congestion, but OBS says it does not solve the underlying cause. Consult the OBS guide for the current controls and instructions for your version.

If the encoder output or CPU looks unhealthy

In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect stream-health messages and compare them with what OBS is actually sending. YouTube recommends checking that the encoder is current, reviewing its picture and sound, looking for dashboard errors, checking CPU load, and verifying a local archive. If the encoder output itself looks bad, inspect sources and routing or test another encoder. If the output looks healthy but outbound connectivity is poor, focus on the network branch instead. YouTube’s troubleshooting page outlines these checks.

For YouTube, the current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one value as suitable for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

If OBS will not start or YouTube reports an encoder error

A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and acts as its password. If a third-party encoder reports an error starting, open YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current stream key, and update the encoder’s key as needed. This check is aimed at startup or authentication errors; it is not evidence that a stream key caused a connection that ran successfully for hours to stop. YouTube explains stream keys in its stream settings guidance and recommends updating the encoder with the current key for relevant startup errors in its troubleshooting guidance.

Protect recordings and plan for interruptions

Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Record locally, check that the file is growing during the stream, and verify the recording afterward. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. See its live-stream archive guidance and event tips.

For planned continuity, YouTube’s event tips describe testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Test the actual setup before relying on it. This is guidance for a planned backup design, not a guarantee of seamless recovery from every OBS or network interruption.
