OBS “lag” has three different causes: missed frames while OBS renders or encodes, frames dropped between OBS and the streaming service, or viewer buffering even when OBS reports a healthy stream. Check which symptom you have before changing settings; a graphics adjustment will not repair an unstable network, and a faster connection will not free an overloaded GPU.
First, identify which kind of lag you have
Open OBS’s statistics or performance indicators while streaming and note whether the problem coincides with rising missed frames or network-dropped frames. Also ask whether the problem affects your preview/game, the stream connection, or only viewers. OBS’s guides frame these as separate issues: “My game framerate is fine, but OBS can’t keep up!” and “Why does my stream lag/buffer/load for my viewers?”

| What you observe | Likely branch | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports frames missed during rendering or encoding | Local rendering or encoding load | GPU/CPU load, output settings, scene complexity, and encoder |
| OBS’s network dropped-frame counter rises | Connection to the streaming service | Ingest server, stable upload capacity, network configuration, and software or drivers affecting traffic |
| OBS counters appear normal, but viewers report buffering | Viewer-side playback or stream accessibility | Bitrate, platform recommendations and options, and viewers’ devices, locations, and connections |
Make one change at a time, then compare the same OBS indicators and stream conditions. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped on your particular setup.
If OBS is missing frames during rendering or encoding
OBS must use the GPU to composite and render a scene. If a game or another application is using the GPU at full capacity, OBS may not have enough room to render frames on time. The official OBS encoding performance guide recommends reducing competing load and adjusting the work OBS must do.

Free GPU resources for OBS
- Close other GPU-intensive applications that are not needed during the stream.
- Cap the game’s frame rate at a level your system can sustain, or try V-Sync. A game running at an unnecessarily high frame rate can consume resources OBS needs.
- Reduce demanding in-game graphics settings and check whether OBS’s missed-frame indicators improve.
Reduce output work carefully
Lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce rendering and encoding work. Frame rate affects both; if 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. The trade-off is visible: lower resolution reduces image detail, while lower frame rate makes motion less fluid. Test each adjustment separately and keep the highest settings that remain stable.
Simplify scenes and sources
Scenes can add workload through sources, filters, browser sources, and large scene collections. Remove or simplify elements you do not need for the current stream. Consider reducing capture or media-source resolution, using fewer filters, limiting browser-source count or dimensions, and removing unused scene collections. Some sources can consume resources even when they are not visible. For static overlays, an image source may be a lighter choice than a more complex source, where it suits the job.

Try conditional system-level checks
On Windows, OBS says running the program as administrator can resolve some GPU-overload cases; it is a diagnostic option, not a universal requirement. If OBS or hardware encoders show performance problems or failures, disabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is another troubleshooting step described by OBS. Restart the computer after changing HAGS. See the OBS HAGS guide for the procedure and context.

If OBS reports network dropped frames
Network-dropped frames mean OBS is having trouble delivering data to the remote stream server, either because the path is unstable or because the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate. OBS states, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Start with the network path rather than changing scene filters or buying a faster graphics card. Follow the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.

- Try another ingest server. A different server may provide a more reliable route from your location. Compare the dropped-frame counter after changing it.
- Set a sustainable bitrate. Base the bitrate on stable upload capacity, not a best-case speed-test result, and stay within the streaming service’s current limits. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a universal rule; capacity can vary, and platform limits still apply.
- Review network-affecting settings and software. Check OBS network settings, VPN or security software, network-prioritization tools, and network drivers for possible interference.
- Test wired networking if Wi-Fi may be unstable. OBS recommends trying a wired connection in that circumstance. An Ethernet cable is relevant only as a way to test or improve that network path; it does not address local rendering or encoding overload.
- Contact your ISP if the fault persists. Persistent connection problems may require the provider to investigate the connection.
If viewers buffer while OBS looks healthy
A normal OBS counter does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. Viewers use different devices, live in different locations, and have different internet connections. OBS notes: “Often, you will not drop frames and still have viewers complaining about lag, buffering, or the stream constantly loading.” See its stream buffering troubleshooting guide.
Consider whether your bitrate is accessible to the audience you want to reach, and follow the platform’s current recommendations and playback options. A lower bitrate may help viewers with constrained connections, but it can reduce image quality. Platform transcoding can give viewers more playback choices; if it is unavailable, the single stream bitrate may be a more significant accessibility constraint. Platform availability and features vary, so check the service you use.

Should you switch to hardware encoding?
Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component in a supported GPU or other hardware. It is not automatically better: support, encoder generation, platform compatibility, and output quality vary. Check the encoder available on your system and the requirements of your streaming service before switching. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the trade-offs and supported approaches.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Compare the result under the same workload. If the original issue is GPU rendering overload, moving encoding to a GPU’s dedicated encoder does not necessarily solve the rendering bottleneck. If the CPU is the constraint, hardware encoding may help, provided the encoder is supported and its output quality meets your needs.
When settings changes are not enough
Do not assume a computer upgrade is the answer until you have identified the bottleneck. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee a system will perform well for a particular stream or recording workload. Scene complexity, output settings, the game, encoder support, and network conditions all affect results.
