Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by checking OBS Stats: encoder lag, rendering lag, and dropped frames point to different problems. For a 24/7 fireplace stream, first free GPU capacity, reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed, and simplify the scene; changing encoders or buying hardware should come later. No setting guarantees that an unspecified computer will run reliably around the clock, so test the actual setup before relying on it.
Identify what is falling behind
OBS needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes even when video encoding is handled by the CPU or a dedicated hardware encoder. An overloaded GPU can therefore cause trouble without a game running, and switching encoders does not necessarily fix a rendering bottleneck.
Open OBS’s Stats and review the lag and dropped-frame information while the stream is running. Use the OBS log as additional evidence. Separate the symptoms before changing settings:
- Encoding lag: the selected encoding path is not processing frames on time. Reducing output work or choosing a compatible hardware encoder may help.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render or composite scenes in time, often because GPU resources are exhausted. Free GPU capacity and simplify sources first.
- Dropped frames or buffering: these can indicate network delivery problems or viewer-side behavior rather than encoding. An encoder upgrade will not fix a connection problem.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide describes overload as a resource-capacity problem. It does not prescribe a universal configuration for continuous fireplace streams.

Reduce load in the order that is easiest to reverse
1. On Windows, run OBS as administrator
Close and relaunch OBS with administrator privileges, then check Stats again. OBS says, “In many cases, GPU overload issues can be resolved simply by running OBS Studio as administrator; try that before continuing with this guide.” This is a GPU-resource troubleshooting step for Windows, not a guaranteed fix for every encoder problem.
2. Close competing GPU work
Quit other programs using substantial GPU resources if it is safe to do so. OBS specifically identifies other games and GPU computation as possible competing workloads. Check for the problem again after closing them.

3. Lower the output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution or Common FPS Values. Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is not keeping up, try 30 fps; lower resolution can also reduce load. Change one setting at a time and check Stats so you can see what helped. The trade-off is less motion smoothness or image detail.
4. Simplify the fireplace scene
Inspect the scene and its sources, not just the encoder setting. OBS notes that some sources can consume resources even when they are not visible.

- Use fireplace media close to the size at which it is displayed instead of needlessly oversized video.
- Remove filters that are not needed.
- Limit browser sources and their dimensions. If an overlay is static, consider replacing it with an image source.
- Review large scene collections and split them if they have become unwieldy.
For a static fireplace scene, concentrate on the media source, filters, browser overlays, output settings, and concurrent applications. This applies OBS’s general performance guidance; it does not establish that any particular video file or computer has been tested.
5. Use the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point
Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard and treat its result as a hardware-aware starting point, not proof that the machine can sustain a 24/7 stream. OBS cautions that system requirements alone do not establish streaming capacity: the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all matter.

When to change the encoder or hardware
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC on compatible NVIDIA GPUs for Windows and Linux; AMD AMF on Windows and Linux; Intel QSV on supported Intel systems for Windows and Linux; and Apple VideoToolbox. The choices available on your machine depend on its hardware, operating system, drivers, encoder generation, and streaming service. Check those details before changing your setup.
OBS generally recommends modern hardware encoding where available because it moves encoding work to a specialized component and can reduce CPU workload. Its Hardware Encoding guide says, “Modern hardware encoders provide very good quality video with minimal performance impact.” Older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Hardware encoding still leaves OBS with a separate scene-rendering workload, so it is not a cure for GPU rendering lag.

Consider a graphics card with a compatible hardware video encoder only after Stats and logs indicate that encoding is the bottleneck and the low-cost changes have not resolved it. Confirm compatibility, generation, drivers, and remaining GPU capacity first. A new GPU is not a guaranteed fix for rendering overload.
Check stability before leaving a stream unattended
There is no single best set of OBS settings for every computer, and the cited OBS guidance does not establish a universal 24/7 configuration or uptime guarantee. Test the exact resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene, and other workloads you intend to use. Watch Stats during the test and inspect the log if lag or dropped frames continue. No published failure rate or 24/7 test result establishes reliability for an unspecified PC.
If the cause remains unclear, a useful diagnosis needs your operating system, CPU and GPU models and generations, OBS version, output resolution and FPS, selected encoder, scene and source list, and OBS Stats or log details.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube fireplace stream rather than keeping OBS running on a PC, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Start a free first day at StreamNeo registration.
