The NVIDIA HD Audio Driver carries digital audio over a compatible HDMI or DisplayPort connection from a supported NVIDIA graphics card to a monitor, TV, or receiver. To use it, install the graphics driver selected for your exact GPU and operating system, enable the intended display in NVIDIA Control Panel, then choose it as the playback device in Windows Sound Settings.
What the NVIDIA HD Audio Driver does
This driver component supports audio sent through a graphics card’s display connection; it is not a general-purpose replacement for your computer’s onboard sound driver. When a compatible display is connected and detected, NVIDIA Control Panel can make it available as a Windows audio output. NVIDIA describes the page as letting users select “which digital-audio capable displays to make available for use as an audio output.” NVIDIA Control Panel Help: Digital Audio

Whether an output appears depends on the graphics card, connection, and display or receiver. HDMI and DisplayPort can carry audio, but not every display supports every audio format, and not every GPU exposes the same choices.

- Identify your NVIDIA graphics card and the operating system installed on your PC.
- Open NVIDIA’s driver download page and select the matching product and operating system to find the appropriate package. Do not choose a driver based on the audio feature alone.
- Install the selected graphics driver, then connect and turn on the monitor, TV, or receiver you want to use for audio.
NVIDIA has a separate listing for an HDMI Audio Driver version 1.00.0.59 released on October 1, 2009, for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. That is a historical package, not general guidance for current systems. NVIDIA directs users seeking the latest graphics drivers to its main driver page. NVIDIA historical HDMI Audio Driver listing
#1 Best Overall
- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Enable the display and select it in Windows
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to Display > Set up digital audio.
- Inspect the listed display connection. Select the monitor, TV, or receiver you want to make available as an audio output. If the panel offers Turn off audio for a display, choose it only when you do not want that display to provide audio.
- Apply the setting.
- Open Windows Sound Settings and select the corresponding display or receiver as the playback device.
The exact list depends on the hardware and connection. With some DisplayPort setups, a GPU that supports multiple audio streams per connector may expose multiple displays; a GPU limited to one stream may require choosing which display appears. Use the options shown for your own system rather than assuming all DisplayPort connections behave alike. NVIDIA Control Panel Help: Set Up Digital Audio
If HDMI or DisplayPort audio is missing
- Check the physical and display state: Make sure the display or receiver is connected and powered on, and that the display is activated by the computer.
- Recheck NVIDIA Control Panel: Return to Display > Set up digital audio and see whether the intended connection and display are listed.
- Check Windows playback selection: After enabling the display and applying the setting, open Windows Sound Settings and select its audio device.
- Consider compatibility: NVIDIA notes that some HDMI displays are incompatible with certain audio formats. The control panel may default to Turn off audio when it detects an incompatible display. Available options are specific to the connected equipment.
Linux HDMI audio: useful background, not current version guidance
On Linux, HDMI audio detection involves the graphics driver, display capability information, and the ALSA audio driver. NVIDIA’s technical document recommends examining X and kernel logs for HDMI and audio detection messages when diagnosing a missing output. Because that document is old, treat it as architectural background rather than a current, distribution-independent troubleshooting recipe; consult current NVIDIA and distribution documentation for instructions that match your Linux version.
