Fix: ‘No Location Found’ or ‘Location Not Available’ on iPhone

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“No Location Found” and “Location Not Available” on iPhone usually mean your device can’t retrieve someone’s current location through Find My or Messages. The problem can be temporary, such as a weak connection or a phone that’s powered off, or it can come from settings like Location Services, Find My sharing, permissions, Screen Time restrictions, or Apple ID issues.

These messages can appear for your own device or for someone you’re trying to locate, so troubleshooting often involves checking both sides. Before assuming location sharing was turned off, it’s worth reviewing network access, iCloud and Find My settings, app permissions, date and time, device battery status, and possible Apple service outages.

What “No Location Found” and “Location Not Available” Mean

On an iPhone, “No Location Found” and “Location Not Available” usually appear in the Find My app or in a Messages conversation when your iPhone cannot display another person’s current location. They sound similar, but they often point to slightly different situations. In both cases, the message does not automatically mean someone blocked you, turned off sharing on purpose, or is ignoring your request. It simply means your device cannot get a usable location update at that moment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“No Location Found” commonly means Find My does not have a current location to show for that person, device, or item. This can happen if the other iPhone is powered off, out of battery, offline, in an area with no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, or unable to contact Apple’s Find My network. You might also see it if the person stopped sharing their location, signed out of iCloud, disabled Find My iPhone, or switched to a different Apple ID. In Find My, this message often appears where the map would normally show a live or recently updated position.

“Location Not Available” usually means location sharing exists or was requested, but the location cannot be retrieved right now. In Messages, it may appear beneath a contact’s name or inside the location card when the app cannot refresh their position. The other person may still be sharing with you, but their iPhone may not have a data connection, Location Services may be off, or the app may not have permission to access location data. It can also appear temporarily when iOS, iCloud, or Find My is slow to sync across devices.

Where you may see these messages

  • Find My app: under a person’s name, on the map, or when selecting a shared device.
  • Messages app: in the contact details screen or on an active location-sharing card.
  • Family Sharing: when checking a family member’s location through Find My.
  • Shared devices or items: when an iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, or AirTag cannot report its latest location.

The wording can also depend on timing. If the location was available recently, Find My may show a last known location with a timestamp such as “Now,” “5 minutes ago,” or “Yesterday.” If Apple’s servers or the device cannot provide even a stale location, you are more likely to see one of the unavailable-location messages instead. A brief outage, weak signal, low battery, or airplane mode can be enough to interrupt updates.

It is also worth separating location sharing from device tracking. A person can share their live location from one iPhone while still owning other Apple devices that appear separately in Find My. If they change the device used for sharing, turn off “Share My Location,” or remove a device from their Apple ID, you may see an error for one entry while another device still appears normally. That distinction matters because the fix may involve your iPhone, their iPhone, their Apple ID settings, or Apple’s online services rather than a single setting on your side.

Common Reasons Location Sharing Stops Working

Location sharing on iPhone depends on several moving parts working at the same time: the device must be powered on, connected to the internet, signed in to the correct Apple Account, allowed to use Location Services, and actively sharing its location through Find My or Messages. If any one of those pieces breaks, Find My may show “No Location Found,” while Messages may show “Location Not Available.” In many cases, the problem is temporary and does not mean someone has blocked you or intentionally stopped sharing.

Connectivity and power issues

The most common reason location sharing stops is that the iPhone cannot send an updated location to Apple’s servers. This can happen when the phone is powered off, the battery is dead, Airplane Mode is enabled, or the device has no usable Wi-Fi or cellular signal. If the other person is in a parking garage, on a plane, in a rural area, or inside a building with poor reception, their last known location may disappear or fail to refresh.

  • No internet connection: Find My needs Wi-Fi or cellular data to update a live location.
  • Dead battery or powered-off iPhone: The device cannot report its current position.
  • Poor cellular coverage: Location may stall, jump, or become unavailable until service returns.
  • Airplane Mode: This disables normal wireless connections unless Wi-Fi is manually turned back on.

Location Services or sharing settings are disabled

Location sharing also stops when the required privacy settings are turned off. On the other person’s iPhone, Location Services must be enabled under Settings, and Share My Location must be turned on for Find My. If they disabled sharing for you specifically, switched off Find My, or changed which device shares their location, you may see an unavailable message even though their iPhone is online.

This often happens after someone gets a new iPhone, signs out of iCloud, resets privacy settings, or changes family sharing settings. For example, if a person owns both an iPhone and an iPad, Find My may be set to share from the wrong device. If that iPad is left at home without power or internet, their shared location may look broken even while they are carrying their iPhone.

Account, permission, and app-related causes

Find My and Messages rely on Apple Account permissions. If either person signs out of their Apple Account, changes their password, disables iCloud services, or has an account verification issue, shared location may stop working. Screen Time restrictions can also block location changes or prevent Find My from working normally, especially on a child’s device managed through Family Sharing.

  • Apple Account mismatch: The person may be signed in with a different account than the one used for sharing.
  • Sharing expired: Temporary location sharing in Messages can end after the selected time period.
  • App permissions changed: Find My or Messages may no longer have access to location-related services.
  • Screen Time restrictions: Content and Privacy Restrictions can lock or disable location settings.

Apple service outages and software glitches

Sometimes nothing is wrong with either iPhone. Apple’s Find My, iCloud, or Apple Account services can have temporary outages that prevent locations from loading. iOS glitches can also cause stale location data, especially after an update, a network change, or a long period without restarting the device. When this is the cause, the message may appear for mulle contacts at once, or Find My may fail to update across all of your Apple devices.

Quick Checks Before Changing iPhone Settings

Before digging into Location Services, iCloud, or Find My settings, rule out a few simple causes. “No Location Found” and “Location Not Available” often appear because the iPhone cannot reach Apple’s servers, the other person’s phone is temporarily offline, or the Find My app is showing stale information. These checks take a minute and can prevent unnecessary changes to privacy or account settings.

Check whether the iPhone has a usable connection

Location sharing needs internet access. If your iPhone, or the other person’s iPhone, is on a weak cellular signal, connected to a Wi-Fi network with no internet, or in a building with poor reception, Find My and Messages may fail to update. Open Safari and load a new webpage, or send an iMessage to confirm the connection is working. If the page does not load, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, move to a stronger signal area, or toggle Airplane Mode on and off after a few seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the person is still sharing location with you

If only one contact shows the error, the issue may not be on your iPhone. The other person may have stopped sharing their location, signed out of iCloud, turned off their device, enabled Low Power Mode during a low-battery situation, or lost data service. In Messages, open the conversation, tap the person’s name or profile picture at the top, and check whether location sharing options are still present. In Find My, open the People tab and see whether the contact appears there. If they are missing entirely, they may need to share their location with you again.

  • One person affected: the other person’s device, account, or sharing permission is more likely involved.
  • Everyone affected: your iPhone, your Apple Account, your network, or Apple’s location services may be the cause.
  • Intermittent updates: weak signal, battery saving behavior, or temporary server delays are common causes.

Make sure the date, time, and Apple services are not the problem

Incorrect date and time settings can interfere with Apple services, including iCloud and Find My. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and confirm Set Automatically is enabled. You should also check Apple’s System Status page in a browser and look for issues with Find My, Apple Account, iCloud Account & Sign In, or related iCloud services. If Apple reports an outage, changing settings on your iPhone usually will not help until the service is restored.

Restart the apps before changing system settings

Sometimes Find My or Messages simply needs to refresh its session. Close the Find My app and Messages from the app switcher, then reopen them and check again. You can also restart your iPhone to clear temporary connection or app state problems. After the restart, open Find My first, wait a few seconds on the People tab, and then check the Messages conversation again. If the location still does not appear after these basic checks, it makes sense to move on to iPhone settings such as Location Services, Find My permissions, Background App Refresh, and iCloud account status.

Fixes to Try on Your iPhone

If Find My or Messages shows “No Location Found” or “Location Not Available,” start by checking the settings that control your own iPhone’s access to location data. Even if the issue seems to involve someone else, your device still needs a working connection, the right permissions, and current Apple account data to request and display their location correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn Location Services off and back on

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. If Location Services is off, turn it on. If it is already on, toggle it off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on. After that, scroll down and check Find My. Set it to While Using the App or Ask Next Time Or When I Share, and enable Precise Location if available. Precise Location helps your iPhone display a more accurate position instead of a vague or missing result.

Check Find My and location sharing

Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My. Make sure Share My Location is turned on. Tap Find My iPhone and confirm that Find My iPhone, Find My network, and Send Last Location are enabled. These settings mainly affect your own location sharing, but they also help keep Find My working normally on your device. If you use more than one Apple device, check that My Location is set to the iPhone you actually carry.

Refresh your connection

A weak or stalled network connection can stop Find My from loading someone’s location. Try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data, then reopen Find My or Messages. You can also turn on Airplane Mode for 10 seconds and turn it off again. If you are on Wi-Fi, test another app or website to confirm the connection works. If cellular data is being used, open Settings > Cellular and make sure cellular data is enabled for Find My and Messages.

  • Check Date & Time: Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically.
  • Disable Low Power Mode: Open Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode while testing.

Reset location and network settings

If the problem continues, reset the settings that may be preventing your iPhone from requesting or displaying location data. First, try Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This does not erase your photos, apps, or messages, but apps will ask for location permission again. Open Find My afterward and allow location access when prompted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Find My still fails to update, use Reset Network Settings from the same Reset menu. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN settings, and cellular network preferences, so you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward. Once your iPhone is back online, open Find My, pull down on the People list to refresh, then check the same contact in Messages by tapping their name or photo at the top of the conversation.

What the Other Person Should Check

If your iPhone looks fine but Find My or Messages still says “No Location Found” or “Location Not Available,” the problem may be on the other person’s device. Their iPhone must be powered on, connected to the internet, signed in to iCloud, and actively sharing location with you. Ask them to check the items below, especially if the issue started after an iOS update, SIM change, new iPhone setup, or Apple ID password change.

Confirm their iPhone is online and reachable

The other person should first make sure their iPhone has a working connection. Find My needs either cellular data or Wi-Fi to update their live or recent location. If their phone is in Airplane Mode, out of coverage, connected to a weak Wi-Fi network, or has cellular data disabled, their location may stop updating until the device reconnects.

  • Open Settings and make sure Airplane Mode is off.
  • Check that Wi-Fi or Cellular is connected and loading webpages.
  • Go to Settings > Cellular and confirm cellular data is enabled.
  • If signal is poor, move to another area or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular.
  • Restart the iPhone if it shows bars but apps are not connecting.

Check Find My and location sharing settings

They should verify that Find My is enabled for their Apple ID and that they are still sharing with you specifically. On their iPhone, go to Settings > [their name] > Find My. Find My iPhone should be on, and Share My Location should also be enabled. Then they can open the Find My app, tap People, select your name, and confirm that sharing has not been stopped or paused.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If they use mulle Apple devices, they should also check which device is being used as their location source. In Settings > [their name] > Find My, the line under My Location should point to the iPhone they actually carry. If it is set to an iPad, old iPhone, or device left at home, their location may appear wrong, stale, or unavailable. They can tap Use This iPhone as My Location if that option appears.

Review privacy permissions and restrictions

Location sharing can fail if Location Services or system-level permissions are disabled. Ask them to go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is turned on. Then they should scroll to Find My and set access to an allowed option, such as While Using the App. They should also check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If restrictions are enabled, Location Services and Share My Location must be allowed.

Verify Apple ID, date, and software status

If they recently changed their Apple ID password, restored a backup, or set up a replacement phone, Find My may need them to sign in again. They should open Settings and look for any Apple ID prompts near the top of the screen. They should also check Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically, since incorrect time settings can interfere with Apple services. Finally, installing the latest iOS version from Settings > General > Software Update can fix bugs affecting Find My, Messages, or location sharing.

  • Restart their iPhone after changing Find My or Location Services settings.
  • Stop sharing with you, then share again from the Find My app if the contact entry looks stuck.
  • Send a new location-sharing invite through Find My > People > + instead of relying on an old Messages thread.
  • Check Apple’s System Status page if multiple people cannot see their location.

How to Refresh Find My, Messages, and Location Services

If the basic settings look correct but Find My or Messages still shows “No Location Found” or “Location Not Available,” refreshing the apps and location services can force your iPhone to request a new location update. This is useful when the location card is stuck, the map is showing old data, or the other person recently fixed their settings but your iPhone has not updated yet.

Refresh Find My

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Tap the People tab.
  3. Select the person whose location is not updating.
  4. Swipe down on the panel or close and reopen the app to reload the location request.
  5. If the map still does not update, switch to the Devices tab and then back to People.

You can also force close Find My and reopen it. On iPhones with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe Find My off the screen. On iPhones with a Home button, double-press the Home button and swipe the app away. Reopen Find My and check whether the person’s location changes from unavailable to a current timestamp.

Refresh location sharing in Messages

When you check someone’s location through an iMessage conversation, Messages relies on Find My and Location Services in the background. Open the conversation, tap the person’s name or profile icon at the top, then look for the map preview. If it does not load, back out of the conversation, close Messages, and reopen it. You can also ask the person to send their current location manually by tapping + in Messages, choosing Location, and sending a one-time location pin.

If Messages shows the contact’s name incorrectly or opens the wrong contact card, check the contact entry in the Contacts app. Duplicate contact cards, old phone numbers, or an Apple ID email saved under the wrong person can cause location sharing to appear broken. Merge duplicate contacts or update the person’s phone number and Apple ID email, then reopen Messages and Find My.

Restart Location Services

Restarting Location Services can clear a stalled location request without erasing your data. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, turn Location Services off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on. After that, scroll down and confirm that Find My is allowed to use location access. For most users, While Using the App is enough, but Precise Location should be enabled for better accuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Restart your iPhone after toggling Location Services if Find My still does not refresh.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then turn it off to reconnect to cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth signals.
  • Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to rule out a weak or restricted network.
  • Open Apple Maps briefly to confirm your own iPhone can detect its current location.

If the person’s location still will not update, try removing and re-adding location sharing. In Find My, select the person, stop sharing if available, then start sharing again from the People tab. If only one contact is affected, this often works better than resetting network or privacy settings across the entire iPhone. If everyone’s location is unavailable, the issue is more likely related to your connection, Location Services, your Apple ID, or a temporary Apple service problem.

When the Issue Is Caused by Apple, Privacy Settings, or Account Problems

If you have already checked connectivity, Find My settings, Messages, Location Services, and sharing permissions, the problem may not be with either iPhone’s basic setup. “No Location Found” or “Location Not Available” can also appear when Apple’s location-sharing services are having problems, when privacy controls block sharing in the background, or when the Apple Account used for Find My is not working as expected.

Start by checking Apple’s System Status page at apple.com/support/systemstatus. Look for services such as Find My, Apple Account, iCloud Account & Sign In, and Maps. If one of these services shows an outage or ongoing issue, Find My may fail to update even when both iPhones are configured correctly. In that case, avoid repeatedly changing settings; wait for Apple to resolve the service problem, then reopen Find My or Messages and check again.

Privacy settings can also prevent location sharing from working consistently. On the iPhone sharing its location, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and confirm that Location Services is enabled. Then open Share My Location and make sure sharing is turned on for the correct Apple Account and device. If the person owns mulle Apple devices, their location may be set to share from an iPad, old iPhone, or another device left at home instead of the phone they are carrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account-related checks that often fix Find My issues

  • Confirm the Apple Account: In Settings, tap the name at the top and verify that the person is signed in with the same Apple Account they use for iCloud and Find My.
  • Check iCloud access: If the device is prompting for an Apple Account password, payment verification, updated terms, or account recovery, iCloud features may be limited until that prompt is handled.
  • Review Family Sharing: If location is shared through Family Sharing, open Settings > Family, select the person, and confirm location sharing is still enabled.
  • Look for Screen Time restrictions: Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Restrictions can block Location Services or prevent changes to location sharing settings.
  • Check Managed Device controls: A school or work iPhone may have a management profile that limits Find My, iCloud, or Location Services.

Apple Account problems are more likely if the issue affects several Apple services at once. For example, if iCloud backup, iMessage activation, FaceTime, or App Store downloads are also failing, the location message may be only one symptom of a sign-in or account verification issue. Signing out of iCloud should not be the first step, because it can remove synced content from the device if handled incorrectly. Instead, update iOS, respond to any account prompts in Settings, confirm the account password, and only sign out and back in if you have a recent backup and understand what data will remain on the phone.

If all settings are correct and Apple’s services are online, ask the other person to stop sharing their location with you and start again. They can do this from Find My > People, select your name, stop sharing, then share again from the same screen or from your conversation in Messages. This resets the permission link between both Apple Accounts and often clears persistent “No Location Found” messages caused by stale sharing permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “No Location Found” mean someone stopped sharing their location with me?

Not always. It can mean they turned off location sharing, but it can also happen if their iPhone is powered off, offline, in Airplane Mode, out of cellular/Wi-Fi range, or unable to reach Apple’s Find My servers. If their name still appears in Find My or Messages, ask them to check their connection, Location Services, and Share My Location setting.

What is the difference between “No Location Found” and “Location Not Available” on iPhone?

“No Location Found” usually means your iPhone cannot get any usable location data for that person or device at the moment. “Location Not Available” often means location sharing exists, but the current location cannot be updated or displayed. In practice, both can be caused by poor connectivity, disabled permissions, an offline device, Apple service problems, or account-related issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check first if someone’s location is not updating in Find My?

Start by confirming your iPhone has internet access and that Apple’s Find My service is working on Apple’s System Status page. Then force close and reopen Find My, toggle Airplane Mode on and off, and restart your iPhone. If the issue affects only one person, the problem is more likely on their device or account settings.

What settings should the other person check on their iPhone?

They should go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on. They should also check Settings > [their name] > Find My and confirm Share My Location is enabled and that the correct iPhone is set as their sharing device. If they use Messages location sharing, they may also need to stop sharing and start sharing again in the conversation.

Can blocking, Screen Time, or Apple ID issues cause location to stop working?

Yes. If someone blocked you, changed Apple IDs, signed out of iCloud, disabled Find My, or has Screen Time restrictions limiting location changes, their location may no longer appear. Family Sharing settings can also affect visibility, especially for child accounts. If basic fixes do not work, both people should confirm they are signed into the correct Apple ID and that location sharing is still allowed.

Bottom Line

“No Location Found” or “Location Not Available” usually means the iPhone cannot share or retrieve location data because of a setting, connection problem, permission issue, dead battery, signed-out Apple ID, or a temporary Apple service outage. Start with the basics: check Find My, Location Services, internet access, date and time settings, and whether both people are still sharing location properly.

If your settings look correct, ask the other person to verify their device is powered on, online, signed into iCloud, and allowed to share location from the right device. When nothing works, wait a while and check Apple’s System Status page before trying again or contacting Apple Support.
