Dynmap crashes are usually caused by the extra CPU, memory, garbage-collection, or disk load of a full or radius render. Stop the active render, lower the render-thread count so it does not exceed your CPU cores, increase renderinterval above its 0.5-second default, verify that the JVM has enough heap and the disk has free space, then run large renders during a maintenance window. Treat watchdog explanations as unconfirmed unless your log shows a separate main-thread timeout.

Why Dynmap can take down a Minecraft server
Dynmap renders map tiles in the background, but “background” does not mean free. A full render walks the entire selected world and a radius render processes a large area around a point. Both can compete with the game for CPU time, heap, garbage collection, disk writes, and server-thread attention. Update renders are normally lighter; Dynmap’s configuration documentation says changing the render-thread count has a major effect during full and radius renders, but only a marginal effect on update renders.

The failure can look like a normal crash, a frozen server, a process that exits after several hours, or a host that kills the process. The visible symptom is not enough to identify the cause. Use the shutdown log and the host’s resource graphs before changing several settings at once.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Save the complete console output and the latest server log immediately after the event. Look for the last exception, the time between the render starting and the shutdown, and whether the process produced a clean stop message. The following patterns point to different remedies.

OutOfMemoryError, “GC overhead limit exceeded,” or repeated long garbage-collection pauses |
The JVM cannot reclaim enough heap while tiles and world data are being processed. A GitHub issue specifically reports GC-overhead errors during full renders. | Stop the render, reduce concurrency, inspect the JVM heap limit, and plan a larger heap if the host has available RAM. |
| The server runs for hours and then crashes during a full render | A community report describes this pattern; prolonged resource pressure can eventually exhaust memory or expose a disk limit. | Check memory and free disk space over the whole render, not just at startup. |
| The log says the filesystem is full, or tile writes begin failing | Dynmap 0.20 issue 314 links a crash to the server running out of disk space. | Free space or expand the volume before starting another render. |
| The host reports a spontaneous quit with little application output | The hosting environment may have terminated the process for memory, CPU, or other resource limits. A DigitalOcean question documents this type of report during Dynmap rendering. | Compare the provider’s event log and resource graphs with the Minecraft log; ask the provider about enforced limits. |
| A watchdog message appears | A rendering load could contribute to a long main-thread tick, but no available source verifies that the Minecraft watchdog is the cause of Dynmap crashes. | Investigate the exact watchdog stack trace instead of assuming every watchdog event is a Dynmap bug. |
Most published crash reports involve older Dynmap and Bukkit-family versions. Use them as failure patterns, not proof that the same defect exists in your current build. Check current Dynmap issue discussions and your server software’s release notes before downgrading or applying an old workaround.
Stop the render safely
If the server is still responsive, cancel the active full or radius render using the Dynmap cancel-render control or command exposed by your installed version. The exact command name has varied across builds, so use the command list shown by your server rather than copying a command from an unrelated release.
Recommended Free Tools
- Warn players and stop new world activity if possible.
- Cancel the render and wait for the console to confirm that rendering has stopped.
- Do not kill the Java process while it is writing tiles unless the server is already unresponsive; a forced termination can leave incomplete output and makes diagnosis harder.
- Copy the log and note the world, render type, radius, start time, and approximate progress.
A SpigotMC user suggested cancelling a full render on a live server once enough of the map had been rendered. That is a community workaround, not an official Dynmap fix: it limits exposure to the expensive part of the job but leaves the map incomplete.
Reduce Dynmap render concurrency
The documented control is Dynmap’s render-thread count. It should correspond to the number of tiles Dynmap renders at once and must not be higher than the number of CPU cores available to the server. Leaving the value unset makes Dynmap use half of the CPU cores by default.

- Stop or pause rendering.
- Open the Dynmap configuration file for the affected server and locate the render-thread-count setting. The label can differ between Dynmap releases; use the setting name shown in that release’s configuration comments.
- Set a conservative value no greater than the host’s available CPU-core count. If the server shares a machine with other services, reserve cores for those services rather than treating every host core as available.
- Save the file and restart or reload Dynmap as required by your build.
- Test with a small radius render before attempting a full render.
For example, on an eight-core machine, a value of four is a cautious starting point; it is an example, not a universal optimum. Watch the server’s tick behavior and memory use, then adjust one step at a time. Increasing the count can shorten a render while making gameplay less responsive and increasing peak memory pressure. Lowering it generally lengthens the render but gives the game more CPU headroom.
Do not confuse the number of render threads with the number of players or web requests. Render threads control tile-generation work; they do not increase the amount of RAM available to Java or cure a full disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGive the server more breathing room between renders
Dynmap’s documented renderinterval default is 0.5 seconds. If yours is set lower, Dynmap can schedule work more aggressively and add avoidable load. Raise the interval, restart or reload as your version requires, and observe the result before changing another variable.
A longer interval is especially useful when the map is being updated continuously while players are online. It does not remove the cost of a full render, but it reduces the rate at which update work competes with gameplay. The right value depends on how quickly you need the live map to reflect changes; choose stability over a few seconds of freshness while diagnosing crashes.

Check and increase the JVM memory limit
Several community reports associate Dynmap full-render failures with memory exhaustion. One SpigotMC report describes a roughly 9,000-block world running out of memory with 5 GB allocated; the user reported that allocating substantially more memory resolved the failure. A separate GitHub report records “GC overhead limit exceeded” during a full render. These reports show that a heap that is adequate for ordinary play may still be inadequate for a large render, but they do not establish a universal RAM requirement.
- Find the Java startup settings in your launch script or hosting control panel and record the maximum heap assigned to the server.
- Compare that limit with the machine’s physical RAM and with memory used by the operating system, web server, database, backup jobs, and other game servers.
- If the host has headroom, increase the JVM maximum heap in a measured step rather than assigning all physical RAM to Java.
- Restart the server and run a small render while watching heap use and garbage-collection behavior.
- If memory reaches the new ceiling or GC pauses remain severe, stop the render and reduce concurrency; adding heap alone cannot compensate for an unbounded workload or an undersized host.
Do not treat a larger heap as permission to increase the render-thread count at the same time. Change one setting, reproduce the workload, and keep the log from each attempt so you can tell whether the failure moved from memory exhaustion to CPU starvation or disk exhaustion.
Make sure tile storage has free disk space
A full render creates or updates a large number of tile files. The Dynmap 0.20 issue 314 report ties a crash to the server running out of space, so disk capacity belongs in the same checklist as RAM.
- Check free space on the volume that contains the server, the world, and Dynmap’s tile storage; a different mount may fill first.
- Check inode or file-count limits when the filesystem supports them, because many small tiles can hit a file-count limit before byte capacity.
- Remove or move old backups, crash dumps, and unused map data only after confirming that the files are not needed for recovery.
- Leave reserve capacity for logs and temporary files. Starting a render with only a small amount of free space makes a mid-render failure likely.
After freeing space, restart only if your server software requires it, then perform a small render and verify that new tiles are actually being written before launching a larger job.

Run full renders during a maintenance window
Full renders are the most expensive Dynmap operation. Running one while players explore, generate chunks, break blocks, and trigger live map updates combines two workloads that compete for the same CPU, memory, and storage.

- Back up the world and Dynmap configuration.
- Confirm free disk space and the JVM heap limit.
- Use a conservative render-thread count and a higher
renderintervalthan the 0.5-second default if update pressure is also present. - Start with a small radius or a limited area and monitor the console, tick performance, heap, GC, CPU, and disk.
- Expand the job only after the smaller test completes without errors.
Community users have advised running large renders offline or cancelling them on a live server after sufficient coverage has been produced. These are operational workarounds, not maintainer-issued fixes. An offline maintenance render reduces the impact on players; it does not make the render computationally cheap.
Consider separating tile delivery from the game process
An FTB forum participant suggested serving already-rendered Dynmap tiles from a separate web server so the Minecraft process does not also handle web traffic. This can reduce web-serving overhead on the game process, but it does not fix render-time CPU, heap, or disk pressure. Treat it as an architectural option after the render itself is stable, and verify that your proxy or web server points to the correct tile directory and preserves the access controls you need.
Use thread priority only when you understand the trade-off
Dynmap exposes a usenormalthreadpriority option. The Base Plugin Settings documentation notes that most Linux JVMs ignore thread priority, so enabling it may have no observable effect on those systems. On an environment that honors the setting, changing priority can alter how rendering competes with other work; it cannot supply more CPU, memory, or disk space.
Best Value
Leave this option unchanged while diagnosing a crash. If you test it, change only this setting, record the operating system and Java runtime, and compare a controlled small render with the previous run. Revert it if tick latency or render stability worsens.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not assume the watchdog is the root cause
The Minecraft watchdog normally reacts to a main-thread tick that has taken too long. Rendering load could contribute to such a stall, but no available source connects the watchdog specifically to Dynmap rendering. A watchdog line is therefore a symptom to investigate, not confirmation of a Dynmap defect.
Read the watchdog stack trace and the minutes immediately before it. If the trace shows world generation, another plugin, or a blocking disk operation, address that component separately. If the only evidence is that Dynmap was rendering, reproduce with fewer render threads and a smaller area before changing watchdog settings.
Recovery plan after a Dynmap crash
- Preserve evidence. Copy the server log, crash report, host event log, and resource graphs before restarting repeatedly.
- Confirm the trigger. Record whether the failure occurred during a full, radius, or update render and whether it happened immediately or after hours.
- Clear hard limits. Free disk space and verify that the provider has not imposed a memory or CPU cap.
- Lower the workload. Cancel the render, reduce the render-thread count to no more than the available CPU cores, and raise
renderintervalif it was below the 0.5-second default. - Adjust memory deliberately. Increase the JVM heap only when the host has genuine headroom, then repeat a small render.
- Validate progressively. Test a small radius, then a larger radius, and only then a full render during maintenance.
- Document the result. Keep the working settings and the failed log together so a future Dynmap or Bukkit update can be evaluated against a known baseline.
What not to do
- Do not raise render-thread count above the host’s CPU-core count in the hope of finishing faster.
- Do not allocate every byte of physical RAM to the JVM; the operating system and other services still need memory.
- Do not launch another full render immediately after a crash without checking disk space and logs.
- Do not present cancelling a render as a permanent fix; it only limits the current workload.
- Do not change watchdog thresholds merely to hide a timeout whose underlying cause is unknown.
- Do not rely on an old crash report as proof that your current Dynmap version contains the same bug.
When to escalate to the host or Dynmap maintainers
Contact the host when the process disappears without a Java crash report, the provider’s event log shows an out-of-memory kill, or a container limit is lower than the heap you configured. Include timestamps, the render type, allocated heap, CPU-core count, free disk space, and the relevant log excerpt.
Report to Dynmap maintainers when you can reproduce the failure on a supported current build with a controlled render and have ruled out heap, disk, and host limits. Include the Dynmap version, server software and version, Java version, operating system, world size or render area, render-thread setting, renderinterval, and the complete exception. No maintainer-issued fix for this specific crash pattern is established in the available material, so a precise reproduction is more useful than a general claim that “Dynmap kills the server.”
