Fix Microsoft Teams Can’t See Shared Screen on PC [2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Microsoft Teams can’t see a shared screen on PC, it usually means the screen capture pipeline isn’t negotiating correctly—either permissions, capture target selection, GPU/display compatibility, or a stuck Teams cache. The fix depends on whether the problem is on the sharing PC, the PC, or both.

This guide targets the 2024 Microsoft Teams desktop app on Windows 10/11. Follow the steps in order: you’ll often get the first working fix within 5–10 minutes, without reinstalling anything.

Quick diagnosis before you change settings

Before you toggle multiple settings, confirm a few basics. These checks reduce guesswork and tell you which side (sharer vs viewer) needs the fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the viewer see anything at all? If they see a black screen, a frozen frame, or a spinning loader, you’re likely dealing with capture/decoder issues.
  • Does screen sharing work with other participants? If only one specific PC can’t see it, focus on that PC’s settings, drivers, or permissions.
  • Is the sharer on a single monitor or multiple monitors? Multi-monitor setups are a frequent culprit in 2024.
  • Are you using Teams desktop or Teams on the web? If one method works and the other doesn’t, that narrows the root cause fast.

Also note what Teams shows during share: a preview of what you’re sharing, a notification like “Presenting”, or a browser-style picker. Those UI states help confirm whether Teams is capturing correctly.

Common causes (and how they show up)

Teams screen share failures on Windows typically fall into a few buckets. Knowing the bucket helps you avoid random trial-and-error.

Cause Typical symptom Most effective fix
Wrong capture target (window vs desktop) Viewer sees the wrong app, a black window, or nothing when you switch apps Re-share using the correct Window or Desktop option
Hardware acceleration / GPU capture incompatibility Black screen, frozen frame, or share fails after starting Disable hardware acceleration in Teams
Permissions blocked in Windows Viewer can’t receive media; sharer can’t capture correctly Check Windows Privacy permissions for Camera/Microphone and related app settings
Teams cache stuck Works in one meeting but not another; rejoin doesn’t help Reset Teams cache
Overlay software intercepting capture Share works for a moment then stops; intermittent black frames Disable Discord/GeForce overlays/Xbox Game Bar
Display scaling/VRR/driver issues Only happens with certain monitors, scaling %, or refresh rates Update GPU drivers; test scaling/VRR changes

Step-by-step fixes on the PC that shares the screen

Most screen share breakages are on the sharer’s capture side. If you control the sharing PC, try these in order.

Confirm you’re sharing the correct window/app

In Teams, click Share (or the Share content button), then choose the correct target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the meeting in the Teams desktop app.
  2. Select Share and choose Window or Desktop depending on what the viewer needs.
  3. If you pick Window, make sure the chosen window is the one you keep visible. Switching to another app can cause the shared frame to appear blank or incorrect.
  4. Click Share again to start the presentation.

If the viewer can’t see a specific window but sees your desktop, re-share using Desktop.

Check Teams meeting controls and screen-share permissions

In some organizations, meeting organizers restrict screen sharing. Even if you can click Share, the meeting policy can block proper distribution.

  1. Ask the organizer to check meeting options like who can present (or whether “Allow attendees to present” is enabled).
  2. Try starting share again after the organizer changes settings.
  3. If you don’t have organizer permissions, test with the organizer joining from another PC to isolate policy vs device issues.

If only attendees with certain roles can share successfully, permissions are the likely cause.

Switch the share mode (Window vs Desktop) and re-share

This is the fastest workaround and fixes many “black screen” cases.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the meeting, stop sharing (click Stop sharing).
  2. Click Share.
  3. Try Desktop first if you’re unsure which window capture is failing.
  4. If desktop works but window doesn’t, use Window but avoid switching apps mid-share.

Turn off hardware acceleration (Teams)

Hardware acceleration can cause capture/encoding issues with certain GPUs and display pipelines. Disabling it often stabilizes screen share.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams (desktop app).
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Go to General.
  5. Toggle off Hardware acceleration.
  6. Close and relaunch Teams.
  7. Start the screen share again and confirm the viewer can see it.

If you don’t see the exact toggle, your Teams build may differ—update Teams first (next section) because the option is version-dependent.

Update Teams and Windows, then reboot

In 2024, screen share fixes ship frequently. Your best “low-effort” move is to ensure the Teams client and Windows media components are current.

  • Monitor Management Software: ASUS DisplayWidget Center lets users easily change monitor settings via an intuitive interface
  1. In Teams, click your profile image > Check for updates (if available) or just restart Teams and wait for updates.
  2. On Windows 11/10, open Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Install updates, then reboot the PC.
  4. Rejoin the meeting and share again.

If you’re in a managed environment, Windows updates can be delayed by policy—still reboot after the last available update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair display/GPU path: restart the graphics driver

When screen sharing fails only on certain apps or monitors, resetting the GPU capture path can help.

  1. Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B.
  2. Wait for the display to blink (it may momentarily flicker).
  3. Start sharing again in Teams.

If this makes the problem disappear for one meeting but it returns, you’ll want to update drivers and address display scaling/VRR (later sections).

Try a different capture target: Edge or a different monitor

Some apps (especially video players) can trigger DRM-like capture restrictions or simply behave badly during capture.

  • Try sharing a stable app like File Explorer or Microsoft Edge (non-DRM page) to confirm the pipeline works.
  • If you’re using multiple monitors, try sharing Desktop of the target monitor or temporarily disconnect the secondary monitor.

If disconnecting the secondary display makes it work, keep it connected but change your scaling/VRR settings later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step fixes on the PC that can’t see the shared screen

If the sharer’s side looks correct but the viewer still can’t see the feed, the viewer may be blocking media permissions, using a broken Teams state, or receiving video incorrectly.

Verify camera/screen media is allowed in Windows Privacy

Screen share uses video capture/permission pathways. If privacy settings are restrictive, the viewer can end up with missing media streams.

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & security.
  3. Select Camera.
  4. Ensure Camera access is On.
  5. Enable access for Microsoft Teams.
  6. Repeat for Microphone if Teams audio/video behaves oddly.

After changing privacy settings, close and relaunch Teams on the viewing PC.

Check Teams “Media permissions” and call settings

Teams can also pick the wrong device or block media after a reconnect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Teams, join the meeting.
  2. Click … (More) or meeting controls and open Device settings.
  3. Verify the Camera and Microphone selections are correct.
  4. Confirm you can start/stop your own camera (a quick test of the media pipeline).
  5. Leave the meeting and rejoin.

If rejoin fixes it, your Teams media session was likely stuck.

Refresh the device/meeting state (leave/rejoin)

This sounds simple, but it’s one of the most reliable fixes for “can’t see share” issues.

  1. In Teams, click Leave.
  2. Wait 10–20 seconds.
  3. Rejoin the meeting from the same Teams client.
  4. Ask the sharer to stop sharing and start again after you rejoin.

Reset Teams cache (most effective for stubborn cases)

If screen share fails repeatedly for multiple meetings, Teams cache corruption is a prime suspect. Resetting cache fixes many “black screen” and frozen preview problems.

Windows reset workflow (common Teams desktop method):

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fully close Teams: right-click the Teams icon in the system tray and choose Quit.
  2. Press Win + R, type %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and press Enter.
  3. Close the folder window.
  4. Rename the Cache folder (for example, Cache-old).
  5. Launch Teams again and sign in.
  6. Rejoin the meeting and test screen sharing.

If you see a cache folder under a different path (some builds differ), focus on folders named like Cache or GPU Cache inside Teams’ local data directory. Avoid deleting your entire user profile—renaming is safer.

Clear the Windows App/Teams capture state (advanced)

When cache reset isn’t enough, clearing media-related capture state and reinitializing devices can help.

  1. Restart the PC after cache reset (don’t skip this step if the problem is recurring).
  2. In Device Manager (search in Start), expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click your GPU and choose Disable device, then immediately Enable device.
  4. Open Teams and retest screen share.

If disabling/enabling the GPU isn’t practical, use the driver restart method (Win + Ctrl + Shift + B) before each test.

When Teams shares audio but not video (and vice versa)

Sometimes the stream exists but one media track fails. This can happen when the capture is fine but decoding/receiving settings are off.

  • Audio works, video doesn’t: Ask the sharer to switch from Desktop to Window (or vice versa). If it fixes it, it’s a capture target issue.
  • Video works, audio doesn’t: Toggle Include computer sound (turn off, then on) and verify the correct speaker device is selected in Teams device settings.

If either fails every time, update GPU drivers and disable overlays (next sections).

Workarounds that often fix it fast

When you need to get unstuck quickly—especially in meetings—use these targeted workarounds.

Join on a different client: web vs desktop

If the issue is specific to the Teams desktop capture/decoder, the web client can succeed.

  2. Compare behavior: can you see the shared screen on the web client while you can’t on desktop?
  3. If web works, focus on the desktop cache/graphics settings and update cycle.

Conversely, if desktop works but web doesn’t, it points to browser restrictions or permissions.

Use the “Include computer sound” toggle carefully

Computer sound can be picky depending on output device selection.

  1. In Teams, click Share.
  2. Turn on Include computer sound only after selecting the correct screen/window.
  3. Choose the right audio device (speaker/output) if prompted.
  4. Re-share if the viewer still sees no video (don’t assume audio settings alone are the issue).

Disable overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, Xbox Game Bar)

Overlays are a frequent cause of black screens and frozen sharing frames.

  1. Close Discord.
  2. Disable GeForce Experience overlay / NVIDIA overlay in its settings.
  3. Disable Xbox Game Bar: open Settings > GamingXbox Game Bar and turn it off.
  4. Close any screen-recording or streaming tools (OBS, etc.) temporarily.
  5. Restart Teams and test screen share again.

Driver and display settings that commonly break screen share

If Teams fails only with certain monitors or after sleep/hibernation, you’re often dealing with GPU driver or display configuration.

Update graphics drivers (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel) in 2024

Don’t rely only on Windows Update; many organizations see better results from current driver packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify your GPU model in Device Manager.
  2. Install the latest stable driver for your GPU vendor.
  3. Reboot after installation.
  4. Test screen share with the same meeting link.

If you recently updated drivers and the problem started after that, try rolling back one version as a test.

Disable “Variable Refresh Rate” (VRR) and test

VRR can affect how capture and presentation frames are composited.

  1. Open your display settings and turn off VRR (wording varies by GPU and monitor).
  2. If you’re using Windows 11, check System > Display for refresh rate settings.
  3. Restart Teams and try sharing again.

Even if you keep VRR off only for testing, you’ll quickly learn whether it’s a factor.

Set display scaling consistently on both PCs

Windows scaling mismatches can contribute to weird compositing issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On both sharer and viewer PCs, open Settings > Display.
  2. Set scaling to a common value like 100% (temporarily for testing).
  3. Keep the refresh rate stable (don’t mix unusual values during testing).
  4. Re-test screen sharing.

Troubleshooting checklist when the main method fails

If you tried the steps above and it still doesn’t work, use this checklist to avoid looping.

  • Test with a different share target: File Explorer instead of a browser video.
  • Re-share using the opposite mode: if you used Window, switch to Desktop.
  • Disable hardware acceleration in Teams and restart the client.
  • Reset Teams cache (rename the Cache folder) and reboot.
  • Disable overlays (Discord/GeForce Experience/Xbox Game Bar).
  • Update or roll back GPU drivers and retest after reboot.
  • Try the web client on either the sharer or viewer PC to isolate the failing client.

If only one PC can’t see anyone’s shared screen, that PC is the most likely “broken” endpoint—permissions, cache, or GPU pipeline first.

FAQs

Why does Teams show a black screen when I share my desktop?

Black screens are commonly caused by hardware acceleration/GPU capture incompatibilities, wrong share mode (Window vs Desktop), or overlay software. Disable hardware acceleration and test Desktop first.

Does “screen share not visible” mean the meeting is broken for everyone?

Not necessarily. If other attendees can see the share but one PC can’t, the issue is usually on the viewer’s endpoint (privacy settings, Teams cache, GPU driver, or display scaling/VRR).

Should I reinstall Microsoft Teams?

Reinstalling is rarely the first move. Cache reset plus a reboot resolves most cases. Reinstall can help if Teams updates are corrupted, but it’s slower than renaming cache folders.

Will this work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Yes. The steps above apply to both, including privacy settings and Teams cache reset. The exact labels can vary slightly depending on Windows build and Teams client version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I confirm whether it’s a capture issue or a viewing issue?

Have the sharer start sharing and check two viewers. If Viewer A sees it and Viewer B doesn’t, the bug is endpoint-specific. If neither viewer sees it, it’s likely the sharer’s capture settings or GPU/display pipeline.

Bottom Line

When Microsoft Teams can’t see shared screen on PC in 2024, start by validating the share target (Window vs Desktop) and then address the most common technical causes: hardware acceleration, permissions/state, overlays, and Teams cache. Most failures resolve with a disciplined sequence—share correctly, disable hardware acceleration, reset cache, and reboot.

If it persists, isolate by testing on the Teams web client and updating GPU drivers. Once you identify whether the problem is on the sharer or viewer PC, the fix becomes straightforward.
