First determine whether your Mac cannot join the Wi-Fi network, or joins it but cannot reach the internet. Those are different problems: a Wi-Fi connection alone does not mean the router has working internet service. The checks below help narrow down whether the issue is with the Mac, the network, or the internet provider.
Is your Mac unable to join Wi-Fi, or connected without internet?
Check the Wi-Fi menu to confirm Wi-Fi is on and identify the network you are trying to use. If the Mac cannot join it, focus on the connection to that wireless network. If it joins but websites, email, and other internet services do not work, troubleshoot the connection beyond Wi-Fi.

- Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If several devices cannot get online, investigate the router, modem, or internet service.
- Try the Mac on another Wi-Fi network, if one is available. If it works there, the first network or its internet service is the likelier source of the problem.
These comparisons point you toward the right part of the connection; they do not prove a single cause. Apple separates joining a network from troubleshooting internet access in its Mac Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

What should you check on the Mac first?
- Restart the Mac. This can renew the internet address assigned when the Mac joins Wi-Fi. Manually requesting a new address is called renewing the DHCP lease.
- Check date and time. Make sure they are correct.
- Test another network and update macOS. If you can connect to a different Wi-Fi network, check for and install available macOS updates.
- Check VPNs and network-monitoring software. A VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with network connections may affect internet access.

How can Mac’s Wi-Fi tools help?
Check Wi-Fi Recommendations
Open the Wi-Fi menu and look for Wi-Fi Recommendations. If it appears, macOS has detected an issue and offers suggestions. Apple says this option is not available for personal hotspots or some enterprise-security networks, including WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise.

Run Wireless Diagnostics
- Hold the Option key while clicking the Wi-Fi status menu.
- Choose Open Wireless Diagnostics and follow the on-screen instructions.
Wireless Diagnostics analyzes the network connection and lists detected issues and possible solutions. Apple states, “Wireless Diagnostics doesn’t change your network settings.” It also creates a compressed archive that can help an administrator, service provider, or IT support person investigate the issue. Apple documents the archive location as /var/tmp; its filename begins with WirelessDiagnostics and ends with .tar.gz. See Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics instructions.

What should you check on the router, modem, or network?
If you manage the router, check for firmware updates recommended by its manufacturer and consider restarting it. Also check that the modem and router are powered on and connected properly, and inspect any relevant cables. Apple’s Mac internet-connection guidance also points to checking network service status in System Settings > Network.

Apple’s router guidance covers settings including DHCP lease time, NAT, WMM, and DNS. For example, Apple warns that double NAT can prevent devices from reaching some network or internet resources, and that disabling WMM can affect performance and reliability on supported routers. These are context-specific settings, not a reason to change advanced router options blindly. Check Apple’s recommended Wi-Fi router and access-point settings and the router manufacturer’s guidance before making changes.

- Contact your ISP if multiple devices cannot get online on the same network, or if the modem, router, or service status suggests an outage or provider-side fault.
- Contact the network administrator for a workplace or school network. The administrator may need the Wireless Diagnostics archive or may control the network’s access settings.
- Contact Apple Support or an appropriate Mac service provider if other devices work on the same Wi-Fi but your Mac still cannot connect after these checks.
If the Mac works on another Wi-Fi network, Apple recommends checking with the ISP or network administrator responsible for the network where it fails. A persistent problem does not by itself mean the router needs replacing.
