If Instagram notifications are enabled but you still miss alerts, check both Instagram’s notification preferences and your phone’s app-specific notification settings. Then check Focus or Do Not Disturb and whether alerts are arriving silently. The right next step depends on whether every alert is missing, only one category is affected, or notifications appear without sound or a banner.
First, identify what is missing
Notice whether the problem affects every Instagram notification, only direct messages (DMs), or a particular type of activity such as likes or follows. Also check how alerts fail: they may not appear at all, arrive silently, or show up only when you open Instagram.
- All alerts are missing: Start with the phone’s Instagram notification permission and any system-wide silencing mode.
- Only one category or conversation is affected: Check Instagram’s preference for that notification type and whether the individual DM conversation is muted.
- Alerts appear but have no sound or banner: Check the phone’s alert presentation and whether the notification is set to silent.
Check your phone’s Instagram notification settings
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Instagram > Notifications.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Review the available presentation options, including sounds and where alerts appear, and enable the ones you want.
These are Apple’s current directions for app notification controls. If the Instagram Notifications screen does not appear, Apple says the app might not be able to send notifications. Apple Support: Turn notifications on or off for a specific app on your iPhone.

On Android
Find Instagram in your phone’s app or notification settings, then enable the notification types you want. Android can distinguish alerting notifications, which may make a sound and appear on the lock screen or status bar, from silent notifications, which may appear only in the notification shade. If an alert is present there but did not make a sound or appear as expected, check its alerting or silent setting rather than assuming notifications are blocked.
Android menus and options vary by device and version. If the path differs, search Settings for “Instagram” or “notifications.” Google Android Help: Control notifications on Android.

Check whether a Focus is active, whether it has a schedule, and which apps are allowed to notify you. Apple Support: How to get notifications on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

Check Instagram’s preferences and muted conversations
If phone settings allow Instagram notifications but one kind of alert is still missing, inspect Instagram’s own notification preferences and make sure the relevant category is enabled. For a DM-only problem, check whether the affected conversation is muted. Menu names and locations can change, so use the current wording in your app rather than relying on a fixed path.
In-app category preferences and conversation mute status are useful checks for category-specific problems, but the available guidance for these controls is secondary rather than current official Meta documentation. Windows Report’s notification troubleshooting guide and iDownloadBlog’s guide to missing Instagram message notifications on iPhone discuss these checks.
