Puppeteer captures the page as it is rendered when page.screenshot() runs; it does not reapply CSS afterward. If a screenshot looks wrong, first wait for the specific visual state your application needs, then check font readiness, stylesheet requests, computed styles, viewport and browser versions. networkidle2 is a useful navigation wait, not proof that every client-side update has finished.
Why CSS can look wrong in a screenshot
A stylesheet rule appearing in your source code does not prove that the browser fetched the stylesheet successfully, accepted it, or applied it to the element in the screenshot. Nor does completed navigation guarantee that application code has finished changing the page.

Common diagnostic possibilities include a late application update, a failed stylesheet or font request, a selector or media query that does not match, or a viewport/emulation mismatch. These are possibilities to investigate, not a universal diagnosis: the page, Puppeteer version, and controlled browser version are needed to identify the cause.
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation followed by Page.screenshot(), including networkidle2. Treat that as a starting point rather than a guarantee of visual readiness. Puppeteer’s Page API also provides waits for selectors, functions, and network idle.

Use the wait that matches the missing work
Navigation lifecycle and network idle
Choose a navigation condition appropriate to the site. Network idle can help when requests are still settling, but a page may continue client-side work after the network becomes quiet. Conversely, pages with persistent requests may never reach an idle condition. Do not use a navigation wait as a substitute for checking the visual state you actually need.
Application readiness
The strongest wait is usually an application-owned signal: for example, a data-render-ready="true" attribute set only after the relevant content and styles have been applied, a loading overlay disappearing, or a predicate that checks a required state. A selector wait is only as meaningful as the condition it tests. An element can exist in the DOM before its final content or appearance is ready.

waitForSelector can wait for presence and can request visibility, but visibility alone does not establish that the application has completed later updates. Use waitForFunction when readiness depends on a property or state rather than simple DOM presence.

When typography, line wrapping, or element dimensions differ, wait for used fonts after the application reaches its relevant state. MDN documents that document.fonts.ready resolves after used fonts finish loading and related layout operations complete. It does not establish that every optional declared font loaded, nor does it replace checks for stylesheets, images, or application data. See MDN’s Document.fonts reference.

A diagnostic capture pattern
Adapt the readiness predicate to the page under test. This illustrative pattern assumes the application sets the root element’s data-render-ready attribute when the screenshot state is ready; it is not a universal recipe.
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForFunction(() => document.documentElement.dataset.renderReady === 'true');
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
If your application has no readiness marker, add one in the page or test harness, or wait for a specific observable state. Do not add an arbitrary sleep as the permanent fix. A delay that changes the result is evidence that some work is late, but the duration can become unreliable as load times vary.

Check stylesheets, computed styles, and page context
Verify resource delivery
Inspect browser network diagnostics for stylesheet and font requests. Check whether each relevant request succeeded and whether the browser reported loading or parsing errors. A CSS declaration in a file is not evidence that the browser received or applied that file.
Inspect the actual element
Use getComputedStyle(target) for the properties that appear incorrect, and compare those values with the expected result. If the stylesheet loaded, investigate whether the selector matches, a more specific rule overrides it, a media query selects a different style, styles are inserted dynamically, or the element is inside a shadow root or different frame. These are diagnostic checks; the available information does not establish which applies to a particular page.

Match viewport and emulation
Record the viewport dimensions, device scale factor, headless mode, and any device, media, timezone, or other relevant emulation settings. Responsive breakpoints and media queries can legitimately produce different styles at different viewport or media settings. Compare a headed run and a screenshot only after matching the relevant inputs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Record and compare Puppeteer and browser versions
Log the installed Puppeteer package version and the product and version of the Chrome or Chromium instance it controls. Puppeteer can control a bundled browser or a separately selected one, so a Puppeteer version alone does not fully describe the rendering environment. The current Puppeteer guide and API results identify documentation version 25.12.0; your installed package and browser may differ.
If the problem began after an update, reproduce it with the previous and current Puppeteer/browser pairs while keeping the page and capture settings fixed. A historical report, Puppeteer issue #2410, describes inconsistent headless text rendering in an older stack. It shows that version-specific rendering symptoms have occurred; it does not establish a current general defect or a modern fix. Do not apply its historical launch-argument workaround unless the same issue is reproduced in your environment.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot has an earlier layout although navigation completed | Whether client-side rendering or data loading continues after navigation | Wait for an application readiness signal or a predicate for the required state. |
| Text wraps differently or uses a fallback font | Computed font styles, failed font requests, and whether the intended face is actually used | After app readiness, await document.fonts.ready; then confirm the computed font and request result. |
| CSS appears absent or only partly applied | Stylesheet request result, browser errors, selector matching, specificity, media conditions, and frame or shadow-root context | Inspect the target’s computed styles and verify the relevant stylesheet was fetched and applied. |
| Headed and headless captures differ | Viewport, device scale factor, browser version, headless mode, and other emulation settings | Match the settings, then compare the exact Puppeteer/browser pairs. |
| Adding a delay fixes the image inconsistently | Which application update or resource completes during the delay | Replace the sleep with a wait for that specific state or resource. |

If your goal is to obtain a website screenshot rather than debug your Puppeteer page, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns a screenshot or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
