Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If an FFmpeg YouTube stream stops on a Linux server, first establish whether the kernel or a service/container memory limit killed FFmpeg. A cgroup can run out of its own allowance while the host still has free memory. But a stopped stream is not proof of an out-of-memory (OOM) kill: FFmpeg errors, exhausted input, network or RTMP failures, and an ended or invalid YouTube broadcast can produce a similar symptom.
Preserve logs and identify the failure before changing encoding settings or raising a memory limit. The right fix depends on whether the evidence points to host-wide pressure, a cgroup cap, growth in the FFmpeg workload, or a different failure altogether.

How to check if Linux OOM killer killed FFmpeg
Start with the failure timestamp and the process’s exit status. Avoid repeatedly restarting the stream before you have saved the relevant logs: each restart can make it harder to connect an OOM event to the stopped process.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the failure time. Keep FFmpeg’s stderr output, the service log, and any container or orchestration events covering the time the stream stopped.
- Check service and kernel logs. On a systemd host, for example, use
journalctl -u YOUR_SERVICE --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS"andjournalctl -k --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS", replacing the placeholders with the real service name and time. Look for kernel OOM-killer messages namingffmpegor a related process, and note the service result and exit status. - Check the service or container’s memory events. A kernel OOM message is useful, but the process may have been constrained by a cgroup limit rather than host-wide exhaustion. Inspect the cgroup containing FFmpeg, as described below.
- If there is no OOM evidence, follow the other error trail. Read FFmpeg’s final error and exit status, confirm the input was still available, check the stream key and YouTube broadcast state, and inspect network or RTMP errors. Do not infer a YouTube-side cause from a local process stopping.
The journal commands are examples for systemd systems; service names, log availability, container tooling, and cgroup paths vary. Search the logs for evidence tied to the actual failure time, not just a message that mentions memory somewhere in the service history.

Check host memory and the FFmpeg cgroup
Linux can enforce memory limits at more than one boundary. The whole host may be short of RAM, or the cgroup for a systemd service or container may hit its own cap while the host has memory available. Check both before deciding that the server needs more physical RAM.
On cgroup v2, inspect the cgroup that contains FFmpeg
Locate the actual cgroup for the process; do not assume a fixed filesystem path. In that cgroup, inspect these files when present:
memory.current: current memory charged to the cgroup.memory.peak: recorded peak usage, where supported.memory.high: a threshold above which processes are throttled and pushed into reclaim pressure. Crossing it does not, by itself, invoke the OOM killer.memory.max: the hard memory limit. If usage reaches it and cannot be reduced, the cgroup OOM killer can be invoked.memory.events: event counters includinghigh, max, oom, andoom_kill.memory.events.local, if available: local event counts for the cgroup itself, useful when you need to distinguish local events from hierarchical counts.
Compare event counters from before and after a failure if you have those readings. A counter that is already nonzero does not prove it changed during this incident. File availability and cgroup layout depend on the kernel and host configuration. The Linux kernel documents the meaning of these controls and counters in its cgroup v2 documentation.

On cgroup v1, do not copy v2 paths or controls
Cgroup v1 has a different memory-controller hierarchy and interface. Check the deployed system’s actual cgroup version and files before applying v2 instructions. The kernel describes the v1 memory controller in its cgroup v1 documentation; its OOM-control interface is marked deprecated, with v2 controls noted for some corresponding functions.

Measure memory while the stream is running
Measure FFmpeg’s resident memory and the containing cgroup’s usage during a representative run, including the period around a failure. A short snapshot can miss a brief peak; a single end-of-run value can miss a steady climb. Record concurrent FFmpeg jobs, other services sharing the limit, input resolution and frame rate, encoder, filters, and the full command.
FFmpeg offers -benchmark and -benchmark_all for performance and resource reporting, but its documentation says maximum memory consumption is unsupported on some systems and may appear as zero. Treat host and cgroup measurements as the primary evidence; a zero FFmpeg maximum-memory figure does not establish that memory use was low. Consult the documentation matching the installed binary because option behavior can vary by version: FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Do not assume hardware acceleration will reduce system RAM. Its behavior depends on the device and pipeline, and some paths copy frames from GPU memory back to system memory. Check the actual input, filters, encoder, and output path before changing them; FFmpeg supports workloads far beyond simple file remuxing. See the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version’s options and capabilities.
Choose a fix that matches the evidence
| Evidence | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Host-wide memory pressure near the failure | The machine or other workloads may be competing for memory. | Measure competing consumers, reduce concurrent jobs where practical, or provision capacity based on measured demand. |
The FFmpeg cgroup approaches memory.max and its OOM counters rise |
The service or container limit may be the hard boundary, even if the host has spare RAM. | Review the configured allocation against measured peak use, host capacity, and other services before changing the limit. |
| Usage rises over time without a clear cap event | The command, wrapper, input/filter path, supervision, or installed version needs investigation. | Compare logs and measurements over time; reproduce with a minimal workload if possible. The available sources do not establish a universal FFmpeg memory leak or YouTube-streaming defect. |
| No kernel or cgroup OOM evidence | The stop may have a non-memory cause. | Investigate FFmpeg’s last error, input availability, stream key and broadcast state, and network/RTMP errors. |
If a service or container cap is too low
Change the allocation only after comparing it with observed peak use, a reasonable safety margin for workload variation, host capacity, and the needs of competing services. Raising a limit without checking host capacity can shift the failure from a cgroup to the whole machine; it does not create physical memory.

If the host is under broad pressure
Reduce competing memory consumers or concurrent jobs, or provision suitable capacity based on measurement. There is no single RAM requirement that can be inferred from the fact that FFmpeg streams to YouTube; the command, media, filters, encoder, concurrency, and service limits all matter.
If the workload itself drives usage
Change only the parts of the pipeline that measurements implicate. Possible experiments include removing an unnecessary filter or transcode, reducing resolution, or lowering concurrency. These are diagnostic candidates, not guaranteed fixes. Compare memory use and stream behavior after each controlled change.
Avoid disabling OOM handling as a routine workaround. If the machine or cgroup lacks memory, suppressing the kill does not remove the shortage and may make the wider system less stable.
Keep background FFmpeg manageable without confusing the symptom
For a long-running background job, use -nostdin or redirect standard input from /dev/null. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains that it normally checks console input and that terminal behavior can suspend a background job; its remedy is -nostdin. This addresses an interactive-stdin problem, not OOM, network, input, or YouTube broadcast failures. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Run the process under a service manager so startup, logs, and restart limits are explicit. Set bounded restart behavior and alert on repeated exits rather than letting a restart loop conceal the original failure. A supervisor can restart FFmpeg, but repeated OOM kills will recur until the pressure or limit is addressed. Separately verify that the input remains readable and the YouTube broadcast remains valid: a running local process alone does not prove the remote stream is healthy.
