For a standard SDR H.264 stream, explicitly convert the video to yuv420p and verify the encoded output: ffmpeg -i input -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4. This is a starting point, not a universal live-stream command. First confirm whether your source is SDR or HDR; an HDR workflow needs different settings.
1. Confirm whether the video is SDR or HDR
Do not change pixel format before checking the intended color workflow. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. Its separate HDR guidance describes an HEVC-based, 10-bit workflow with 4:2:0 settings. Converting HDR material to the SDR example below can discard the intended HDR characteristics. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance.

2. Check the format FFmpeg is actually producing
The -pix_fmt option requests an output pixel format; it does not guarantee that the selected encoder can provide it. FFmpeg may warn and choose a supported alternative if the requested format is unavailable. Check the command output for warnings and inspect or probe the resulting file or stream rather than assuming the request succeeded. FFmpeg documents this behavior in its advanced video options.

3. Convert SDR H.264 video to yuv420p
For an SDR H.264 output, try this transcode:
ffmpeg -i input -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4
Replace input and output.mp4 with your filenames. This example selects the H.264 encoder, requests yuv420p, and encodes AAC audio at 128 kb/s. It does not deliberately set dimensions, frame rate, or color characteristics; preserve those from your source or set them to the values your production requires. The command creates an MP4 file, but the container alone does not establish that a live ingest configuration is valid.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Use a format filter when it fits your filter chain
If you need to place format conversion in a video filter chain, FFmpeg also documents the format filter. For example:
ffmpeg -i input -vf format=pix_fmts=yuv420p -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4
Use one conversion route or the other as appropriate; do not treat a filter as proof that the encoder ultimately emitted the requested format. See the FFmpeg format-filter documentation.

4. Match the live stream to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); progressive scan; and square pixels. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Confirm the guidance for your chosen protocol and workflow on YouTube’s live encoder settings page, since recommendations and support can change.
These are stream-level recommendations, not a universal FFmpeg pixel-format mandate. YouTube’s separate HDR instructions describe HEVC, 10-bit 4:2:0 configuration and HLS ingestion; if preserving HDR, match color primaries, transfer characteristics, and matrix to your source and follow that HDR workflow: Stream HDR video on YouTube.

Do not substitute upload guidance for live-ingest guidance
YouTube’s upload encoding page recommends H.264 and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling for uploaded videos. That page concerns uploads, not live ingest, so use the live encoder and HDR pages for stream settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
5. Verify the output and test the live stream
- Run the encode and read FFmpeg’s output for pixel-format or encoder warnings.
- Inspect or probe the resulting file or encoder output to confirm the codec and pixel format actually selected.
- Test the stream before going live and review YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its live encoder guidance.
- If YouTube still rejects the stream, recheck the codec, bit depth, frame rate, ingest protocol, and SDR/HDR choice. A pixel-format change alone does not establish that pixel format was the only problem.
6. Troubleshoot persistent rejection
| Symptom or situation | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports that the requested pixel format is unavailable or selects another format | The encoder may not support the requested output format; -pix_fmt is a request. |
Check the encoder and output information. Try the documented format-filter route if needed, then verify the result. |
| The source is HDR | The SDR H.264 yuv420p example is not an HDR recipe. |
Use YouTube’s HEVC/10-bit HDR guidance and preserve the source’s color characteristics. |
| The output format appears correct, but YouTube still rejects the stream | Pixel format may not be the only mismatch; review codec, bit depth, frame rate, and protocol. | Compare the actual stream against YouTube’s current live settings for the selected ingest path, then use stream-health feedback to narrow the problem. |
| You are relying on YouTube’s upload recommendations | Upload settings and live-ingest settings address different workflows. | Use the live encoder guidance for a live stream; consult upload settings only for an uploaded file. |
