If an SRS-fed YouTube stream freezes or shows a spinning wheel when FFmpeg changes playlist items, start by checking the files at that exact boundary. If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, every listed file must have matching streams—including codecs and time bases—and inaccurate duration metadata can misplace the next file. If your media cannot meet those requirements, normalize it before concatenating or use a script to publish files one by one through SRS.
First identify what is changing the video
“Playlist” can describe different input methods. An HLS .m3u8 playlist and FFmpeg’s concat/ffconcat demuxer do not necessarily behave the same way, so inspect the actual FFmpeg command and its input options before changing files or settings. The concat demuxer reads listed files in sequence and adjusts their timestamps; its documented compatibility rule is: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes this requirement.

If the stream plays normally until one item ends and the next begins, compare those adjacent files first. That pattern makes a boundary-specific input or timing issue worth investigating, but does not by itself prove which stage is failing.
Check the files on either side of the failure
Compare the file that ends and the one that follows it. Use your media inspection tools and FFmpeg logs to establish whether their properties match; there is no single probe command that is appropriate for every build and workflow.

- Streams: Check that both files have the same number and types of streams, such as video and audio. An extra, missing, or differently arranged stream can violate concat’s requirement.
- Codecs and time bases: Compare the codec and time base for corresponding streams. Matching resolution alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Duration: Check whether the recorded duration is accurate, especially if the next file starts at the wrong point or the transition produces timing artifacts. FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to position the next one; incorrect duration information can therefore affect the boundary.
- Input method and logs: Confirm whether the command uses concat/ffconcat or another playlist input, and note any FFmpeg error or timestamp/stream warning at the transition.
FFmpeg’s concat documentation allows a duration directive to override a file’s stored duration. Consider it only after verifying the actual duration and the playlist format in use; do not add guessed values as a generic fix. See the FFmpeg documentation for concat behavior and options.
Choose a transition method that fits your files
Option 1: Normalize files, then use concat
If the playlist’s files have different streams, codecs, or time bases, make them consistent before concatenating them. A September 22, 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion describes playback trouble when a user switched among files with different formats, sizes, and aspect ratios; the reply pointed to concat’s matching-stream requirement and recommended transcoding to common properties. Choose encoding parameters for your source files and publishing workflow rather than copying a command blindly. The available evidence does not establish one set of codec, resolution, bitrate, or frame-rate values that will suit every playlist. After normalization, verify that corresponding streams and timing are compatible, then test the transition before relying on the playlist in a live broadcast.
Option 2: Publish files one by one through SRS
SRS’s archived v4 ingest documentation says SRS does not ingest a file list directly and recommends using a script as the ingest tool to copy files to the RTMP stream one by one. It also documents FFmpeg-based file ingest and RTMP publishing examples, with SRS adding -re for file ingest. This is a documented workflow choice, not a promise that switching will be seamless. For this approach, the script controls sequential publishing. Account for how it starts and stops FFmpeg processes, handles a failed file, and supervises the transition in your own deployment. The cited SRS page does not specify a universally gapless script or guarantee uninterrupted playback at each handoff.
Separate the failure stages
A spinning wheel at the destination does not show by itself whether the fault is in file reading, FFmpeg output, SRS ingest, or YouTube playback. Follow the signal through the workflow and record the relevant logs around the failing boundary.

- FFmpeg input: Check whether FFmpeg can open and read the next file. Look for an error as the current item ends or the next one begins.
- FFmpeg output: Check whether FFmpeg reports stream or timestamp problems at the transition, and whether it continues producing output afterward.
- SRS ingest: Verify whether SRS continues receiving the RTMP publication after the file switch. Use logs and the monitoring available in your deployment.
- YouTube playback: If FFmpeg and SRS continue operating but the viewer-facing problem appears only at YouTube, investigate that stage separately. The sources cited here do not establish current YouTube Live encoder requirements, ingest endpoints, or account settings.
To diagnose a case that remains unclear, collect the FFmpeg command and version, playlist contents, metadata for the files on either side of the failure, and the relevant FFmpeg and SRS logs. The SRS instructions cited above are for the archived v4 documentation; check documentation for the version you actually run. FFmpeg’s linked documentation is a rolling project page, so verify version-specific options against your installed build.

Common symptoms and practical fixes
- The failure repeats at the same file: Compare that file’s streams, codecs, time bases, and duration with the preceding file. If properties differ under concat, normalize the files or switch to a sequential publishing design.
- The next item starts at the wrong time or the transition has timing artifacts: Check duration metadata. FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to position the next; use a concat
durationdirective only when you have verified the correct value and the input format. - FFmpeg errors as the next item begins: Preserve the exact error and compare the adjacent media properties. Confirm the playlist method before applying advice intended for the concat demuxer.
- FFmpeg continues but playback still fails: Determine whether SRS is still receiving RTMP. If it is, inspect the downstream stage separately rather than assuming the file boundary is the cause.
- A scripted switch is not smooth: Review how the script supervises FFmpeg and handles handoffs. The documented SRS workaround does not guarantee continuity, so test the behavior in your deployment.
