Why Facebook News Feed Might Stop Loading in 2024
Facebook’s feed can fail to load for reasons that look identical on the surface (blank screen, spinning loader, or a stuck refresh). The most common causes are:

- Stale app cache: old cached assets or corrupted background data inside the app.
- App/browser version issues: using an outdated Facebook app or a browser with broken cookies/storage.
- Permissions: restricted background data or disabled permissions that affect connectivity.
- Account or content signals: limited access, unusual activity checks, or region-specific loading behavior.
- Service disruption: outages or partial outages affecting feed loading.

1) Confirm it’s the News Feed (not Facebook in general)
Open Messages, Notifications, and Menu. If everything works except the News Feed, you’re likely dealing with caching, feed-specific loading, or a blocked script/storage item.
2) Check for a service outage
Search for Facebook outage reports or check a status aggregator. If others report the same issue, focus on waiting or switching networks to confirm local vs global.
3) Switch networks once
Try moving between Wi‑Fi and mobile data (or vice versa). If it works on one network but not the other, the issue is almost always DNS, captive portal settings, or ISP routing.
4) Force-close and restart the app
- iOS/iPadOS: swipe up from the bottom, pause, then swipe Facebook away; reopen.
- Android: open Recents, swipe Facebook away; reopen.
5) Toggle VPN/Private DNS off
If you use a VPN, disable it. If you use Private DNS (Android), switch it back to default and reload the feed.
6) Log out and back in (fast sanity check)
In the app: open Menu → Settings & privacy → Settings → Log out. Log back in and test the feed.
Fix on iPhone and iPad (iOS)
On iOS, the most reliable fixes are: updating the Facebook app, clearing in-app data (if available), and removing background restrictions that block connectivity.
Update the Facebook app
Go to the App Store, search for Facebook, and tap Update if a newer build is available. Outdated versions commonly break feed rendering.

Check Background App Refresh and Cellular settings
If Background App Refresh is disabled, the feed may appear blank when the app tries to fetch content in the background.
- Open Settings
- Tap General → Background App Refresh
- Ensure Facebook is enabled
- Go back to Settings → Cellular → find Facebook
- Turn on Cellular Data for Facebook
- Open Facebook and test the feed
Clear Facebook cache (if available) or reinstall
Facebook’s in-app cache clearing options aren’t always present on every iOS build, so reinstalling is the most dependable fallback.
- Try in-app cache controls if you see them: Menu → Settings & privacy → Settings → Media and contacts / Storage (names vary)
- If you can’t clear cache, reinstall: hold Facebook icon → Delete App
- Install again from App Store
- Log in and test the News Feed
Fix on Android
On Android, cached data and background data restrictions are the usual culprits. Clearing the app cache (not just data) is typically step 1.
Update Facebook from Google Play
A current Facebook app version reduces rendering and API mismatches.
- Open Google Play Store
- Search Facebook
- Tap Update
- Launch Facebook and reload the News Feed
Clear Facebook app cache
This often fixes a feed that’s stuck loading due to corrupted cached assets.
- Open Settings
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications
- Tap Facebook
- Tap Storage / Storage & cache
- Tap Clear cache
- Force-stop Facebook, then reopen
Check data restrictions (Data Saver, background data)
Android power-saving modes can block background network calls, leaving the feed blank.

Reinstall Facebook (last resort on Android)
If cache clearing didn’t help, reinstalling removes deeper storage corruption.
- Uninstall Facebook
- Restart your phone
- Install the latest Facebook app from Google Play
- Log in and test the News Feed
Fix on Desktop (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge)
On desktop, the most common cause is cookies or site data corrupted for facebook.com. Cleaning site data for Facebook usually restores feed loading quickly.
Chrome (Windows/macOS)
Use Chrome’s Site settings to clear cookies and cached data for Facebook only.
- Open Settings in Chrome
- Go to Privacy and security → Third-party cookies / Site settings
- Open Site settings
- Find facebook.com and open its settings
- Choose Clear data (or remove site data)
- Also reload after clearing: open a fresh tab to facebook.com
Safari (macOS)
Safari often needs a site-specific cleanup rather than a total browser reset.
- Open Safari → Settings (or Preferences)
- Go to Privacy
- Select Manage Website Data
- Search for facebook.com and remove it
- Restart Safari and sign in again
Firefox
Clear site data for facebook.com and reload.
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security
- Under Cookies and Site Data, choose Manage Data
- Search for facebook.com
- Select it and click Remove Selected
- Reload the Facebook page
Edge
Edge uses a Chromium model like Chrome, so site data clearing is similar.
- Open Settings in Edge
- Go to Privacy, search, and services
- Under Clear browsing data, choose Choose what to clear
- Instead of clearing everything, clear site data by managing cookies for facebook.com
- Remove facebook.com site data
- Reload and test News Feed
Disable extensions (ad blockers, script blockers)
Ad blockers and privacy extensions can strip scripts Facebook relies on for feed rendering.

Advanced Troubleshooting
If the quick steps don’t work, use targeted checks that distinguish local device issues from server-side problems.
Test with a different account (or incognito/private mode)
This rules out account-specific restrictions. On desktop, try Incognito/Private mode and log in; on mobile, use Facebook’s account switcher.

- Log into Facebook
- Check News Feed
Clear DNS cache / change DNS (network-level issue)
If a specific DNS server causes incomplete resolution, the feed may fail while other sites work.
- Windows: run
ipconfig /flushdnsin Command Prompt - macOS: restart Wi‑Fi or reboot, or flush DNS via Terminal if you know the exact method for your macOS version
Alternatively, switch networks or try a different DNS provider (only if you’re comfortable doing so).
Check time and date settings
Incorrect system time can break secure connections and logins. Fixing time sync is a surprisingly common fix.
- Enable automatic time and timezone
- Restart the browser/app
- Re-test News Feed
Try a different browser engine (desktop)
If one browser is broken due to stored cookies, the feed won’t load even after other steps. Testing in another browser narrows it down fast.

When the App Works but the News Feed Still Won’t Load
Sometimes Facebook loads menus and messages, but the feed area stays stuck. When that happens, focus on feed-specific blockers.

Turn off “Background data” restrictions (mobile)
If the feed fetch happens in background and it’s blocked, you’ll see a blank or spinning feed.
- iOS: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → enable Facebook
- Android: disable Data Saver and check battery optimization for Facebook
Disable content filters and link previews interference
Some security apps and DNS filters block scripts or trackers that Facebook uses for feed modules. Temporarily disable them and retest.
Update iOS/macOS to remove OS networking bugs
If you’re on an older OS build, update. For example, if you’re stuck on an iOS version from months ago, moving to the latest iOS point release can fix network handshakes affecting webviews and API calls.

Common Mistakes That Keep It Broken
- Only refreshing without restarting the app or reloading with a different network.
- Clearing browser cache globally instead of clearing facebook.com site data (which can be more precise).
- Leaving VPN/Private DNS on during testing. Always isolate the variable.
- Ignoring Data Saver / Battery saver on mobile.
- Rushing to reinstall when the fix is actually an extension or cookie issue on desktop.
Facebook News Feed Not Loading: FAQ
How long should I wait if it’s a Facebook outage?
Most partial outages resolve within a few hours. If you confirm other users are affected and switching networks doesn’t help, wait and re-test later.
Why does Facebook load messages but not the News Feed?
That pattern often points to feed-specific scripts, cached data, or cookies for facebook.com. Clearing site data for facebook.com or clearing the app cache usually fixes it.
Does clearing cache delete my Facebook account?
No—clearing cache typically removes stored files used for faster loading. Clearing app data (Android) is more destructive than clearing cache and may require re-login.
Will using Facebook Lite help?
Possibly. If your normal Facebook app fails to render the feed due to a client bug, an alternate client sometimes loads content correctly. Test it briefly on the same network.
What if none of the steps work?
Try a different device on the same network, and a different network on the same device. If the feed breaks only for your specific device/account combo, it’s likely a local cache/permissions issue; if it breaks everywhere, it’s likely account restrictions or a service-side problem.
Bottom Line
When Facebook News Feed isn’t loading in 2024, the most effective path is: confirm it’s not an outage, switch networks, then clear the right cached data (app cache on mobile or facebook.com site data on desktop). After that, test without VPN/extensions and check background data/battery restrictions.
If you still hit a spinning loader, isolate the cause by testing a different account and browser, and verify device time/network settings. That approach gets you from “stuck feed” to a working News Feed faster than random resets.
