If setup cannot complete or the camera appears not to work, Apple says service may be needed.
1. Update iOS first
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest version offered for your iPhone. Apple’s iOS 27.0.1 release notes, dated September 29, 2026, say the update fixes an issue where iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate.

That release-note fix is specifically about unexpected restarts associated with authentication failure. It does not establish that every Face ID recognition problem or setup failure has the same cause, or that updating will resolve all of them.
2. Make sure Face ID is set up and enabled for what you’re doing
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Confirm that Face ID has been set up and that the relevant option is switched on—for example, iPhone Unlock, purchases, or app authentication. If Face ID works to unlock the phone but not in a particular app or for a purchase, check the setting for that specific use.

3. Clear the TrueDepth camera area
Apple locates the iPhone 18 Pro’s TrueDepth camera at the top of the device, toward the left corner. Check that area for a smudge or anything covering it. A case or screen protector can interfere if it overlaps the camera; Apple specifically recommends removing a privacy screen protector while troubleshooting Face ID on these models.
- Wipe away any visible smudge on the exposed camera area.
- Temporarily remove a case or screen protector if it might cover the camera.
- In landscape orientation, check that your finger or palm is not blocking the camera.
A microfiber lens-cleaning cloth may help with a visible surface smudge, but it will not fix a software problem, a setup that cannot complete, or a damaged camera.

4. Check your face, lighting, distance, and orientation
For standard Face ID, Apple says your eyes, nose, and mouth should be fully visible to the camera. Try these checks if recognition is unreliable:

- Move or remove a mask if it sits too high or too close to your eyes. Face ID with a mask works only in portrait orientation.
- Remove heavy makeup or a beauty mask temporarily, and avoid strong backlighting from the sun.
- Hold the phone at arm’s length or closer. Apple gives a typical Face ID distance of 10–20 inches.
Apple says Face ID works in portrait and landscape on iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later. The mask feature is the exception: use portrait orientation when relying on Face ID with a mask.

5. Restart the iPhone, then try Face ID again
Restart the iPhone, enter your passcode when prompted, and test Face ID. Entering the passcode after a restart is expected; it does not by itself mean Face ID is broken.
6. Reset Face ID if the basic checks don’t help
If Face ID still fails after updating, checking the settings and camera area, and restarting, remove the existing Face ID setup and enroll again:

- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up Face ID again.
If the iPhone repeatedly asks you to move your face into the frame but never advances, note that as a setup failure rather than just a recognition miss.

Apple says service may be needed if Face ID setup repeatedly cannot get past the face-positioning instructions, or if the camera is not working and Face ID cannot be set up. Apple advises that the device be serviced only by a trained technician.

Do not attempt to repair or modify the TrueDepth camera or its laser systems yourself. Apple warns: “Improper repair, modification, or use of nongenuine Apple components in the laser systems might prevent the safety mechanisms from functioning properly, and could cause hazardous exposure and injury to eyes or skin.”
