If you see Error: Flash Download failed - Target DLL has been cancelled while programming a microcontroller, the message alone does not identify the cause. It is a generic failure endpoint reported with different target families and tools. Check board power, the debugger connection and PC detection, then the IDE target and flash algorithm—in that order—before changing settings or replacing hardware.
What the cancellation message tells you
It tells you that the flash-download operation did not complete; it does not, by itself, prove that the microcontroller is bricked, the debugger is broken, or any one setting is at fault. The same wording appears in support contexts involving different target families, including an LPC2148/Keil case and a separate NXP QN902x guide (NXP Community; NXP AN11664). The messages immediately before the cancellation are often more useful for narrowing it down.

Start with safe checks, in this order
1. Record the setup and full log
Before changing settings, note the board and exact MCU, IDE and version, probe model, whether the connection is SWD or JTAG, and how the target is powered. Save the complete output, especially the lines preceding the cancellation. This helps distinguish a power or connection failure from a target-selection or flash-configuration problem.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Confirm the target board has its required power
Check the board documentation for the supply required by the target circuitry. USB can power an onboard debugger without supplying the target at the level needed for programming. In one reported Infineon TLE9893 evaluation-kit case, the user said connecting the kit’s 12V input as well as USB resolved the problem; that is evidence for that particular kit, not a voltage recommendation for other boards (Infineon Developer Community).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Check the debug cable, pinout, and probe detection
- Follow the board documentation for whether power should be off while connecting or checking the debugger.
- Verify connector orientation and pin mapping, including ground, and confirm that the wiring matches the selected SWD or JTAG interface.
- Check that the computer recognizes the probe and that its driver is installed.
For an LPC2148/Keil report with this exact message, an NXP employee listed proper target power, correctly mapped and oriented debugger wiring, PC drivers, and project memory or flash-driver settings among the checks (NXP Community). These are diagnostic checks, not a guarantee that any one will resolve another board’s failure.
If you use onboard debug hardware, follow the board’s instructions to select that probe and its port. In a KitProg/Keil support thread, an Infineon moderator suggested checking Device Manager and selecting KitProg in Port Setup; the original user later reported that debugging still failed. Treat those as initial checks, not a confirmed fix (Infineon Developer Community).

4. Verify the selected target and debugger in the IDE
Confirm that the project targets the exact MCU on the board and that the intended debug driver is selected. If you use J-Link or J-Trace in Keil µVision, check that the target driver is enabled for flash programming and that its settings are configured as required by Keil’s guide (Keil J-Link/J-Trace Flash Download guide).
5. Inspect the flash algorithm and address range
Check that the selected flash programming algorithm supports the MCU’s actual flash device and covers the addresses in the image you are downloading. Look for incorrect overlaps with other configured algorithms. Keil documents several distinct flash-programming failure causes, including a missing or unsuitable algorithm, missing algorithm functions, insufficient or invalid RAM assigned for algorithm operation, and algorithm timeouts (Keil ULINK2 error messages). A cancellation line by itself does not tell you which, if any, applies.

Retry only after a specific correction
Once you have identified and corrected a particular power, wiring, driver, target-selection, or flash-configuration mismatch, try the download again. If it still fails, preserve the full log and configuration screenshots and contact the board or probe vendor with the exact hardware and software versions, target voltage, and probe details. Avoid repeatedly changing unrelated options: it can obscure the original failure without establishing its cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an external debugger is relevant
A separate SWD/JTAG probe is worth considering only if the existing probe is absent, confirmed faulty, or unsupported by the target or IDE. Before buying one, check support for the exact MCU, the required interface, connector and pinout, target-voltage compatibility, PC drivers, and IDE support. A new probe cannot correct missing target power or an unsuitable flash algorithm.
