Windows 11 Error Code 0x80070490 shows up most often when Windows Update or Windows component servicing can’t complete a required operation. The code itself is generic, so the “fix” depends on what part of Windows is failing—updates, Store/app installs, or the servicing stack.
This guide gives you a proven sequence of fixes that covers the usual root causes: stuck update components, corrupted system files, a damaged Windows image, and pending reboot/servicing conditions. Follow the steps top-to-bottom, and only move to deeper options if the earlier fixes don’t resolve it.

- Windows Update failing to download/install cumulative updates or feature upgrades.
- Microsoft Store or app installs failing because Windows components required by the installer aren’t healthy.
- DISM/SFC reporting corruption that can’t be fully repaired without clearing update/service state.
The goal is to restore Windows Update components and repair system health so the servicing stack can apply updates normally.
Before You Start: Requirements and Quick Checks
Before running repairs, check the basics that often cause false “corruption” symptoms.
Confirm you’re on a stable build
Go to Settings > System > About. Note your Version (for example, 23H2) and OS build number. If you’re already mid-upgrade, prioritize the Windows Update resets and pending reboot checks.

Most fixes require an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal (Run as administrator). If you’re in a restricted account, you may be blocked from stopping services, clearing folders, or repairing the image.
Check storage and power
Windows Update frequently fails when disk space is low. Ensure at least 10–20 GB free on the system drive (C:). Keep the PC plugged in—Windows servicing is sensitive to power loss.
Disconnect risky software
Third-party antivirus, “optimizer” tools, and some VPN/proxy setups can interfere with update downloads. If you’re able to temporarily disable them, do so before deeper repairs.
Proven Fixes (Try in This Order)
Work through these in sequence. Each step addresses a specific layer: state stuckness, update delivery, component servicing, and then system file/image integrity.

1) Rerun Windows Update After a Reboot
It sounds basic, but servicing operations often require a clean reboot to clear locks and pending operations. Restart the PC, then test:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
If the error returns immediately, continue.
2) Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Microsoft’s troubleshooter can detect and repair common Windows Update pipeline issues, including broken services or metadata.

This is the most reliable “middle layer” fix. It clears the update cache and restarts the services Windows uses to download and install updates.
Recommended Free Tools
Steps (Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as Administrator):
- Press Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt (or select Windows Terminal (Admin)), then choose Run as administrator.
- Stop update services by running the following commands one by one:
net stop wuauservnet stop bitsnet stop cryptsvcnet stop msiserver
Now rename the update folders (this forces Windows to recreate them):
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.oldren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
Start the services again:
net start wuauservnet start bitsnet start cryptsvcnet start msiserver
- Reboot.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
Gotcha: If you get “Access is denied” during folder renaming, ensure no other update-related process is running and that you’re truly in an elevated admin shell.
4) Repair System Image with DISM
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the Windows image store that Windows uses for component servicing. This is often the turning point when 0x80070490 persists.

6) Check for Pending Servicing/Reboots
If Windows thinks there’s unfinished servicing work, update attempts can fail with generic errors like 0x80070490. A reboot often fixes this, but not always—especially if a prior update install got stuck.
- Reboot once.
- If the error persists, run the update component reset (Step 3) again, then rerun DISM and SFC (Steps 4–5).
If your PC shows multiple “Restart required” banners but never completes, the in-place repair install option may be necessary (covered later).
7) Fix Microsoft Store and App Install Failures (WUA + Store cache)
If you see 0x80070490 while installing apps from the Microsoft Store (or apps that rely on Windows app components), refresh the Store-related caches.
Reset Store cache:
- Press Win + R, type wsreset.exe, press Enter.
- Wait for the Store cache reset to complete (it may appear briefly as a blank window).
- Reboot and try the Store install again.
If it’s still failing: reset the Windows Update components (Step 3). Store/app installs often use the same servicing stack that Windows Update relies on.
When the Error Happens During Windows Update: Targeted Scenarios
The right fix is usually one of the steps above, but these scenarios help you avoid wasted time.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Feature update failures (22H2/23H2 to newer builds)
Feature upgrades are more sensitive to component corruption. Do DISM and SFC even if Step 3 seems to help temporarily.
- Reset Windows Update components (Step 3).
- Run DISM restorehealth (Step 4).
- Run SFC (Step 5).
- Retry the upgrade in Settings > Windows Update.
If upgrades keep failing at the same percentage, consider an in-place repair install (advanced options) to avoid repeated servicing failures.
Specific KB download/install loops
When one cumulative update (KB) repeatedly fails, it’s often cached metadata or broken component state rather than a temporary network issue.
- Reset components (Step 3).
- Run DISM (Step 4).
- Try again. If the same KB keeps failing, note the KB number (for example, KB503xxxx) and capture the failure message details.
You can also try installing via Microsoft’s official offline update packages (when available), but do the component repairs first so the offline install has a healthy servicing stack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsServicing stack mismatches
Windows sometimes can’t apply an update if the servicing stack itself is outdated or damaged. DISM restorehealth repairs the image store, but if it can’t reach a healthy source, you may need a local repair source using an ISO.

- Mount the ISO and note the drive letter (example: D:).
- Run:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:wim:D:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess
If you use an install.esd instead of install.wim, the syntax may differ—stick to the file that exists inside sources.
Advanced Options If Basic Repairs Don’t Work
If you’ve reset update components and repaired the image/files and the error still won’t go away, the next steps address deeper system integrity or state.
Run System Restore (If you have a restore point)
If 0x80070490 started after a specific change (driver, feature update attempt, system tool), restore points can help.
- Search Create a restore point in Start.
- Open it, then click System Restore.
- Select a restore point dated before the issue began.
- Complete the wizard and reboot.
After restore, check Windows Update again.
In-place repair install (keep apps and files)
An in-place repair install can fix deep servicing problems without wiping your files. It’s more reliable than resetting the PC when Windows servicing is the root cause.
- Download the latest Windows 11 installation media/ISO from Microsoft.
- Run setup.exe from the mounted ISO.
- Choose Keep personal files and apps (when prompted).
- Follow prompts until it finishes and reboots.
Afterward, run Windows Update to catch up to current patches.
Reset this PC (last resort)
Only use this if repairs can’t fix the system image and servicing stack. Choose the option that best fits your needs (keep files vs. remove everything).

- Skipping DISM/SFC: Resetting update components without repairing system health can lead to repeated failures.
- Installing from Store before repairs: If Windows app components are broken, Store installs may keep failing until servicing is healthy.
- Interrupting updates: Cutting power during servicing can worsen corruption.
- Using third-party “driver update” tools: Random driver changes can trigger new update conflicts. Prefer Microsoft Update and trusted device drivers.

- Check system drive health: If disk errors exist, servicing can fail repeatedly. Consider running:
chkdsk C: /f
You may need to schedule it for reboot depending on usage.
- Try DISM with a local ISO source if online restorehealth can’t complete.
- Review Windows Update logs (advanced):
- Open Event Viewer and check Windows Logs > System and Application around the time the update failed.
- Look for related servicing errors that mention CBS, DISM, or Windows Update Client.
If you consistently see CBS/DISM errors that won’t repair with DISM + SFC, go straight to in-place repair install.
FAQ
Does 0x80070490 mean my Windows 11 is infected?
Not necessarily. This code is usually tied to Windows servicing/update failures. Still, run a reputable antivirus scan if you suspect compromise.
Will resetting Windows Update components delete my personal files?
No. Renaming SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 affects update cache and metadata, not your documents or installed apps.
Can DISM or SFC make Windows unbootable?
On healthy systems, DISM and SFC are safe. However, if the disk has severe corruption, repairs may fail or behave unexpectedly—hence the value of checking disk health and keeping backups.
What if DISM hangs at a high percentage?
Give it time (it can run for 10–30+ minutes depending on hardware and source availability). If it fails with a clear error, switch to the ISO-based local source method shown above.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs there a Microsoft official tool I can use?
Yes—Windows provides troubleshooter utilities and the Windows Update stack itself. For more stubborn cases, Microsoft’s in-place repair install via official ISO is a practical “official” path because it replaces key system components while keeping your data.
Final Thoughts
Error code 0x80070490 is frustrating because it’s generic, but the fix path is usually straightforward: reset update components, repair the Windows image with DISM, then repair corrupted files with SFC. In most cases, that combination restores the servicing stack so Windows Update can complete normally.
If you still hit the same failure after those repairs, don’t keep retrying indefinitely—use System Restore if available, or switch to an in-place repair install to resolve deeper servicing corruption.
