These messages appear when a custom recovery fails to install a ROM or update ZIP, but they do not identify one universal cause. A third-party procedure reported for this error resets dynamic-partition metadata with a matching super_empty.img; it is not a guaranteed or device-independent fix. Check your ROM maintainer’s instructions and confirm the image and Fastboot mode are right for your exact phone before running any partition command.
What the errors mean—and what they do not
“Error applying update: 7” and “Updater process ended with ERROR: 1” are failure messages encountered during recovery-based ROM or update ZIP installation. The text alone does not establish why installation failed. The phone model, ROM build, recovery and its version, slot context, and complete installation log are needed to investigate a specific case.

One possible area to investigate is the device’s partition layout. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) explains that dynamic partitions are represented within a super partition: “The super partition contains metadata listing the names and block ranges of each dynamic partition within super.” OTA updates can create, resize, or delete dynamic partitions, and A/B devices maintain metadata copies associated with their slots. These facts explain why partition state can matter, but they do not prove it caused a particular installation error. See AOSP’s dynamic partitions documentation.
Before trying the reported super_empty.img procedure
- Find the ROM maintainer’s installation instructions for your exact device and build. Confirm that the recovery and installation path you are using are supported.
- Obtain
super_empty.imgonly from the ROM developer or another source explicitly intended for the exact device and build. Do not substitute an image merely because it is for a similar phone or Android version. - Read the device-specific instructions for the required Fastboot mode. Do not assume bootloader Fastboot and fastbootd behave the same way.
- Back up data and understand the possibility of data loss or an unbootable device before changing partition metadata. If the maintainer’s instructions do not cover this operation, stop and ask for device-specific guidance rather than improvising.
AOSP documents that bootloader fastboot should not permit flashing or erasing dynamic partitions; fastbootd is a userspace implementation of the Fastboot protocol. The correct mode and commands depend on the phone and ROM instructions. Consult AOSP’s fastbootd documentation and your device documentation.

The third-party workaround: reset super metadata
Droidwin’s guide, updated April 16, 2026, reports a procedure involving Android SDK Platform Tools, a computer connection, Fastboot, and the ROM developer’s super_empty.img. The guide suggests returning to recovery after the reset and continuing the ROM installation. This is a third-party troubleshooting procedure—not an official AOSP fix, a universal recommendation, or a guarantee of success. Follow the ROM maintainer’s device-specific directions in preference to generic steps.
- Download and extract Android SDK Platform Tools on a computer, as directed by the ROM maintainer or device instructions.
- Obtain the matching
super_empty.imgfrom the ROM developer if it is provided. Droidwin’s fallback suggestion is limited to an image for the same OS build and device; if you cannot verify that match, do not use a substitute. - Connect the phone to the computer with a USB data cable, then enter the Fastboot mode specified for your device and ROM. Confirm whether the instructions require bootloader Fastboot or fastbootd.
- Only if the image and command are explicitly appropriate for your exact device and build, follow the ROM developer’s instructions. Droidwin’s reported command is
fastboot wipe-super super_empty.img; do not assume it is valid or safe on every device. - Reboot to recovery using the device- and ROM-specific method, then continue installation only as the maintainer directs. If installation fails again, stop repeating partition operations and preserve the complete recovery log for diagnosis.
The USB cable is only for connecting the phone to the computer; it does not fix the partition error. Choose a data-capable cable with the connector your device uses.

If the error persists, gather details before another attempt
Share the following with the ROM maintainer or a device-specific support community. These details can distinguish a package mismatch or unsupported installation path from issues involving partitions or slots; the error wording alone cannot.

- ROM name, ZIP filename, build, and the source from which you obtained it.
- Recovery name and version, plus the installation steps you followed.
- Whether the device uses A/B slots and which slot or slot-related steps were involved, if known.
- The complete recovery installation log, not only the final error line.
- Any Fastboot commands already run and whether they were run in bootloader Fastboot or fastbootd.
Do not keep retrying with different images, builds, or partition commands without confirming they match the device and the maintainer’s procedure. No prevalence figure or success rate is established for this error or the reported workaround.
