Android power management can slow or defer background CPU and network work when the screen is off, but that does not mean Docker itself paused a container. First identify where the workload is actually running: in Termux, inside a Termux proot-distro session, or on a remote Linux Docker host. Then check the process state, power settings, and—if Docker is genuinely involved—the container’s status and logs.
First identify what “Docker on Android” means
These setups behave differently, so the right fix depends on where the work is running:
- Native Termux process: Termux runs programs on Android’s host operating system by default; that is not Docker, a virtual machine, a chroot, or a proot container. Termux explains its architecture.
- Termux with proot-distro: A Linux distribution runs in a proot environment. This is distinct from a Docker container and remains subject to Android’s power management. The proot-distro documentation describes its session management.
- Docker CLI connected to a remote host: The container runs on that Linux host, not on the Android phone. Check the remote host and whether the phone’s connection to it was interrupted.
Android Doze can defer background CPU and network activity after a device has been unused for a long time. Android 7.0 and later also applies lighter optimizations when the screen turns off, even while the device is moving. Either can make a workload slow or a service unreachable without proving that its process exited. Android’s Doze and App Standby guidance explains these behaviors.
Diagnose what stopped
- Check whether the process still exists. For native Termux work, inspect the process from Termux. For proot-distro, use its documented commands to list and manage sessions. A detached session can make a process easier to track, but it does not exempt it from Android power policy.
- Separate process state from service reachability. If the service cannot be reached, check whether the process is still running and whether the phone or remote host still has network access. Doze can affect networking as well as CPU activity, so an unreachable endpoint alone does not show that the process died.
- If Docker is involved, inspect the container state and logs on its host. Docker’s
pausecommand deliberately suspends processes in a container using the Linux freezer cgroup. A container reported as paused points to an explicit Docker, operator, or automation action; investigate that separately from Android screen-off behavior. Docker documents the pause command.
Keep a long-running Termux task active with a wake lock
For work actually running in Termux, its documented wake-lock action is a practical option to try before turning off the screen:

- In Termux, run
termux-wake-lockbefore starting or continuing the task. - Turn off the screen and check whether the task continues as expected.
- When the work is finished, release the lock with
termux-wake-unlock.
Termux warns that without a wake lock, tasks may run very slowly or be paused, and that holding one increases standby battery use. Use it for active work that needs the CPU, not as a cost-free always-on setting. Termux’s wake-lock documentation covers the commands and trade-off.
Review Android background and battery settings
Check Android’s battery or background-activity settings for Termux and any companion app the workload depends on. Exact menu names and behavior vary by Android version and device manufacturer, so there is no single settings path that applies to every phone. An exemption may help, but it is not a promise of uninterrupted execution. Android’s guidance recommends choosing the lightest suitable background-work mechanism and cautions that wake locks can have a substantial battery impact. Choose an approach that fits the workload

For work that can run periodically, scheduled background work is generally preferable to keeping the CPU awake continuously. For genuinely continuous service, a phone is not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime: device-specific power management, memory pressure, network changes, and platform behavior can still interrupt the workload.
