Discord Rich Presence shows what you’re doing inside supported games and apps—then updates in your profile and friends’ lists. When it stops updating, it’s usually not “random”; it’s typically a connectivity, permissions, overlay/integration, or outdated-version problem.
This guide walks you through four simple fixes that resolve the majority of Rich Presence issues in 2024 on Windows and macOS. You’ll also get troubleshooting steps for the cases where the fixes don’t move the needle.

Rich Presence isn’t a standalone feature you “turn on” globally. It’s powered by integrations from supported apps/games that send presence data to Discord through Discord’s IPC and client session.

When something breaks, the signal from the game/app doesn’t reach Discord (or Discord refuses to display it), which is why restarting, permissions, and version alignment tend to fix it fast.
Before You Change Anything: Quick Prerequisites
- Confirm the app/game is actually Rich Presence-capable. Some apps show it only for specific modes or after loading into a session.
- Use the Discord client, not only the browser. Browser-based Discord may not show Rich Presence reliably for some apps.
- Sign in to the right account. If you have multiple Discord accounts, check which one is active.
- Check whether you’re muted or privacy-restricted. Presence visibility settings can affect what others see.
Fix 1: Restart Discord (and the Game) the Correct Way
A clean restart clears stuck IPC sessions and forces the game/app integration to reconnect. This is the fastest fix when Rich Presence is “stuck” on an old status.
Windows (Discord desktop app)
- Close the game/app first.
- In Discord, click the gear icon (User Settings) → Quit Discord.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Find any Discord processes (for example, Discord and any related entries), select them, and click End task.
- Reopen Discord, then launch the game/app and stay in-game for 10–30 seconds.
macOS (Discord desktop app)
- Quit the game/app.
- In Discord, go to Discord (menu bar) → Quit Discord.
- Open Activity Monitor (Finder → Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor).
- Search for Discord, select any running entries, and click Stop.
- Relaunch Discord, then open the game/app and wait 10–30 seconds.
If Rich Presence updates after this, you’re done. If it doesn’t, move to the next fix.

Fix 2: Make Sure Rich Presence Is Enabled for the App/Game
Some Rich Presence integrations are controlled by application settings (inside the game) or by Discord status/privacy behavior. Even if Discord is fine, the integration may be disabled in the source app.
Check Discord’s visibility and activity behavior
- Open Discord → click your gear icon (User Settings).
- Go to Privacy & Safety.
- Review settings that affect visibility (commonly “Who can add you as a friend” is unrelated, but it’s still where Discord groups presence/privacy options).
- Also check Status behavior: if your status is set manually (like Do Not Disturb), games may still send presence, but you might not see it the way you expect.
Check the game/app integration toggle
Many games include a dedicated setting such as “Discord Rich Presence,” “Show activity,” “Integration,” or “Connected accounts.” Look in the game’s:
- Settings → Social / Integrations / Privacy
- Account page for connected services
Enable it, then fully restart the game after changing the setting.

Fix 3: Rebuild Discord Connectivity (Clear Cache + Verify Settings)
When Discord’s local session or cache is corrupted, Rich Presence can silently fail. Clearing Discord’s cache (without uninstalling) often fixes presence update problems.
Windows: Clear Discord cache
- Quit Discord completely (use Quit Discord, then confirm no Discord process remains in Task Manager).
- Press Win + R, paste this path, and press Enter:
%appdata%\Discord - Inside the Discord folder, locate the Cache folder (commonly Cache).
- Delete Cache (you can also remove Code Cache if present).
- Reopen Discord and wait for it to reconnect, then launch the game/app.
macOS: Clear Discord cache
- Quit Discord fully.
- In Finder, use Go → Go to Folder….
- Paste:
~/Library/Application Support/discord/ - Delete the Cache folder (and Code Cache if it exists).
- Relaunch Discord, then reopen the game/app and wait 10–30 seconds.
Verify Discord permissions (especially if you changed anything recently)
On some setups, OS-level privacy controls can interfere with what apps can communicate to. If you recently changed macOS privacy permissions or security software, temporarily re-check those policies for Discord.
If clearing cache doesn’t help, Fix 4 usually resolves it by aligning versions.
Fix 4: Update Everything (Discord, the Game, and OS Components)
Rich Presence integrations depend on APIs and client behavior. Running mismatched versions is one of the most common reasons the integration stops working after updates.
Update Discord
- Open Discord.
- Click your gear icon → look for any Update prompt (Discord typically updates automatically, but you can force a restart).
- If you see a “Restart to Update” prompt, confirm it.
Update the game/app
Open your platform launcher (commonly Steam or an app’s built-in updater) and apply updates. Then reboot Discord and the game for a clean session.

Confirm OS updates aren’t stale
- Windows: Run Windows Update and install pending updates, especially .NET/runtime and system updates.
- macOS: Install pending system updates (Security and OS updates) and restart your Mac.
After updating, launch Discord first, then start the game/app and wait for the Rich Presence integration to initialize.

Overlay tools (including some performance overlays) can interfere with game integrations. Temporarily disable:
- Third-party overlay apps
- Performance monitors
- Any tool that injects into processes
Restart Discord and the game after disabling them.
Try a different network scenario
Rich Presence relies on Discord’s connection. If you use a VPN, try disconnecting it. If you’re on a restrictive network (campus/work), try a mobile hotspot for a quick test.
Reinstall Discord (last resort)
- Uninstall Discord.
- Reboot your computer.
- Install the latest Discord version from the official source.
- Log in, then retest Rich Presence with the same game/app.
Test with a different Rich Presence-supported app
If one game fails but another works, the issue is almost certainly game-specific (integration bug, disabled setting, or in-game mode requirements). If nothing works across multiple apps, it points back to Discord/client/session/network.

Common Mistakes That Keep Rich Presence Broken
- Changing settings but not restarting the game. Most integrations read settings at startup.
- Closing Discord by the window (not fully quitting). Some background processes keep IPC sessions alive.
- Using browser-only Discord. Prefer the desktop app for reliable Rich Presence behavior.
- Expecting instant updates. Some apps update only after joining a match or entering the correct menu state.
- Assuming it’s a Discord issue when the app is the problem. Game integration updates often lag behind or break after patches.
