Discord headphones usually stop working because Discord, the operating system, or the active Bluetooth route is sending audio to a different device. Test the headphones in another app, then select them explicitly in Discord and in your system sound settings; if they fail everywhere, troubleshoot the connection or device rather than Discord.
Use the symptom table to find the right path. Menu names can vary by operating system and Discord version.

| Symptom | First thing to check |
|---|---|
| No sound from Discord, but other apps work | Discord output device, output volume, mute/deafen, and the affected user’s volume |
| Headphones do not work in any app | Connection, system output selection, volume, port, Bluetooth pairing, or hardware |
| Others cannot hear you | Discord input device, microphone permission, and input mode |
| Bluetooth audio is muffled in a call | Bluetooth headset profile; try a separate microphone or wired/USB headset |
| Sound comes from a phone speaker | Select the headphones in the in-call audio output menu |
Why Discord headphones stop working
Audio problems can come from device selection, operating-system routing, permissions, or Discord voice settings. Headphones may be connected while Discord is still using another output. “Default” can also change when a Bluetooth headset, monitor, USB headset, or dock connects, so select the named headset while troubleshooting.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Common root causes
- Wrong output device in Discord (Discord sends audio to speakers or another device).
- Wrong input device in Discord (the microphone is not the one you expect).
- System or per-app routing sends Discord to a different output than other apps.
- Bluetooth routing or profile changes affect output or audio quality during a call.
- Mobile permissions can block microphone use; they do not usually explain playback-only failures.
- Voice processing settings may affect distorted, choppy, or unexpectedly quiet audio.
- Browser permissions can block microphone access, and browser device routing may differ from the desktop app.
Quick triage
Start with these checks before changing advanced settings. They help identify whether the problem is Discord-specific or affects the whole device.

- Check the headset and its controls. Make sure it is powered and charged, its physical volume is up, and its mute switch is off. Reseat the plug or USB dongle, or reconnect Bluetooth.
- Test audio outside Discord. Play music, a video, or a system sound through the headphones. If they fail in every app, troubleshoot the operating system, connection, driver, or headset.
- Check Discord mute and volume. Make sure you are not deafened or muted, and that the affected person or channel is not muted or turned down.
- Leave and rejoin the voice channel. Then fully quit Discord and reopen it; closing its window may not quit the app.
- Select the headphones in Discord. Open User Settings → Voice & Video, choose the named headphones under Output Device, and raise Output Volume. Choose the correct Input Device only if the microphone is also affected.
- Restart the device if the route remains stuck.
Discord’s Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide also recommends checking connections, devices, volume, software, and reinstalling the app if needed.
Fix Discord headphones on Windows PC
First confirm that Windows can play sound through the headphones, then set the same named device in Discord. The exact Windows labels vary by version.
- Select the Windows output.
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Output, select your headphones and check the volume and mute state.
- Check the volume mixer.
- Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
- Find Discord, make sure it is not muted, raise its volume, and select the intended output for the app if that option is available.
- Select devices in Discord.
- Open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Choose your headset under Output Device and raise Output Volume.
- If the microphone is also affected, choose the correct Input Device and use the microphone test if available.
- Check classic playback devices if routing is still wrong.
- Press Win + R, enter mmsys.cpl, and open Playback.
- Right-click the intended headphones and choose Set as Default Device. Set as Default Communication Device only if appropriate for your setup.
- Use Test to check whether Windows can play sound through them.
- Turn off audio enhancements if sound is distorted or absent. Open the selected output device’s properties and set Audio enhancements to Off if that control is present, then test again. Microsoft lists incorrect output, mute or volume, enhancements, and driver issues among possible causes of no sound from headphones (Microsoft support).
- Check the headset connection. Try another USB port for a USB headset or dongle, or reconnect and re-pair Bluetooth headphones. If Windows no longer detects the device or other apps also fail, check Windows Update and the computer or headset maker’s driver support page; avoid third-party driver-updater tools.
If you still hear nothing in Discord
Confirm Discord is not muted in the Windows volume mixer and that its per-app output, if shown, is the headset. In Discord, select the named output instead of Default and check Output Volume. If the headphones work in other apps but not Discord, use Discord’s Voice & Video reset option, then quit and reopen the app.
Fix Discord headphones on macOS
Set the output in macOS and Discord separately. Current macOS versions use System Settings; older versions may call the panel System Preferences.

- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Sound → Output.
- Select the headphones, check volume, and make sure mute is off. Select the headset under Input too if its microphone is affected.
- Select Discord devices.
- Open Discord User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Select the named headphones under Output Device and raise Output Volume.
- Select the headset microphone under Input Device only if needed.
- Reconnect Bluetooth headphones. Disconnect them from other nearby devices, turn Bluetooth off and on, or forget and pair them again. Test with another app before returning to Discord.
- Check microphone permission if the mic is affected.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Allow Discord, then quit and reopen it.
There is an important exception for dedicated USB audio interfaces and XLR devices: Discord says these are not officially supported for consistent voice-chat performance on macOS because of an underlying WebRTC issue, and recommends a traditional headset or microphone instead. See Discord’s macOS audio-interface guidance.
If you can hear others but your mic does not work
In Discord Voice & Video, confirm Input Device and check the input activity meter while speaking. If it stays flat, check macOS microphone permission and whether the selected headset microphone is available. Microphone permission is relevant to input, not usually a fix for playback-only problems.
Fix Discord headphones on iPhone and iPad
On iPhone and iPad, check the in-call audio route as well as Bluetooth connection. Mobile Discord does not always offer the same explicit output-device selector as the desktop app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Connect the headphones before joining the call. Confirm they play audio in another app.
- Select the call output. During a Discord call, open the audio output or AirPlay menu and choose the connected headphones rather than the phone or tablet speaker.
- Check device volume while the call is active and make sure the headphones are not muted.
- Check Discord Voice settings in the app if available. Do not expect every mobile version to show a desktop-style Output Device dropdown.
- Allow microphone access if the mic is affected. Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable Discord.
- Reconnect or restart. Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth, force-close and reopen Discord, and update Discord and iOS if the issue persists. If voice disconnects or behaves inconsistently, test with Low Power Mode off.
- Check wired adapters. Lightning or USB-C headphones may require an audio-compatible adapter. Remove a case if it prevents the plug from seating fully, and test the headphones in another app.
Fix Discord headphones on Android
Android device menus vary by manufacturer. Check Android’s Bluetooth and media routing first, then Discord and microphone permissions if input is also affected.

- Confirm the headset works elsewhere. Play audio in another app and raise Android media volume. If no app can use the headset, troubleshoot Android or the connection first.
- Check Bluetooth media audio.
- Open Settings → Connected devices or Bluetooth.
- Confirm the headset is connected, open its device details, and enable Media audio if that option appears.
- Disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices and reconnect the headset before reopening Discord.
- Check the call route. During a Discord call, use Android’s available audio output control if shown. Mobile Discord may not provide the same output selector as desktop.
- Allow microphone access if needed. Open Settings → Apps → Discord → Permissions and allow Microphone. Some Android versions also show nearby-device or Bluetooth permissions.
- Check battery restrictions if calls stop in the background. Temporarily turn off battery saver or allow Discord to run normally in the background; exact labels differ by manufacturer.
- Re-pair if necessary. Forget the headset, pair it again, and test Discord. If audio cuts out when another app plays, close that app and retry.
Advanced fixes when Discord still will not use your headset
If the headset works in other apps but Discord does not, try these steps after checking routing, volume, and mute state.
Reset Discord voice settings
In User Settings → Voice & Video, look for Reset Voice and Video Settings in the troubleshooting or debugging area. The exact label and location can vary by client version. After resetting, select the named output device again and check volume.
Check Bluetooth quality changes
Some Bluetooth systems switch to a lower-quality communications profile when the headset microphone is active, which can make playback sound muffled. This varies by headset and operating system. Try using the Bluetooth headset for output and the computer or phone’s built-in microphone for input, or test a wired or USB headset.

Check browser permissions
If you use Discord in a browser, open the browser’s site settings for Discord and allow microphone access if the mic is affected. Check the browser’s sound and device controls, then reload the page after reconnecting the headset. Browser controls differ, so use the browser’s current permission panel rather than assuming it matches the desktop app.
Update or reinstall only after basic checks
Update Discord and the operating system. If Discord alone still fails after selecting the correct devices and resetting Voice & Video, fully quit and reopen it; reinstalling is a later option. For Windows devices that disappear or fail in every app, check the computer manufacturer’s audio or Bluetooth driver guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that keep breaking audio
- Leaving Discord on Default while the operating-system default changes; select the named headset to diagnose.
- Checking only system audio without testing Discord voice output and its volume.
- Confusing input and output. The microphone setting affects what others hear; the output setting affects what you hear.
- Changing noise suppression first. Check routing, mute, and volume before processing settings.
- Assuming Bluetooth connected means media audio is routed. Check the active output and, on Android, Media audio.
- Assuming microphone permission fixes playback. It matters when the microphone is blocked, not usually when you cannot hear others.
