Why Discord Audio Keeps Cutting Out (Common 2024 Causes)
“Cutting out” can mean different things: your voice input disappears, other people’s audio glitches, or you hear a stutter that starts after a few seconds. The root causes are often consistent.
- Audio device switching: Windows “Default communications device,” headset USB power changes, or Bluetooth reconnects.
- Discord audio processing: Noise suppression, echo cancellation, or automatic gain control fighting your mic settings.
- Permissions and privacy: macOS/iOS microphone permissions or browser permissions blocking audio capture.
- Hardware acceleration / capture mode: Discord’s audio path may be affected by GPU/driver behavior.
- Exclusive mode: Some audio drivers seize the device, causing periodic dropouts.
- Network jitter or packet loss: Less common for pure cutouts, but it can cause intermittent audio gaps.
Before you change anything, note whether the cutting out happens for you only (your microphone) or for everyone (channel-wide playback). That determines where you should focus first.

7 Instant Fixes to Stop Discord Audio From Cutting Out
Try these in order. Each fix targets a frequent cause and takes under a minute for most setups.
1) Switch Discord Input/Output Devices Manually
If Discord is set to the wrong mic or speaker (or the wrong default device changes), audio can drop every time Windows toggles a communications device.
Open User Settings → Voice & Video and re-select the correct Input Device and Output Device.
2) Turn Off Discord Noise Suppression (Temporarily)
Discord’s noise suppression and echo cancellation can cause “gated” audio where it cuts when it thinks you’re quiet.
Go to Voice & Video and set Noise Suppression to Off and Echo Cancellation to Off (then test a call for 2–3 minutes).
3) Disable Hardware Acceleration in Discord
Hardware acceleration issues can produce stutters or cutouts—especially with certain GPU drivers and capture pipelines.
In Discord, open User Settings → Advanced and toggle Hardware Acceleration off. Restart Discord after changing it.

- How it Fits: On-ear compact design may feel snug initially—adjust properly and wear 30-60 minutes daily for the first week. Optimal comfort achieved after 1-2 weeks as ear cups conform to your ears. Take 10-minute breaks during extended use.
- Wired computer headset with foldable design; ideal for calls, meetings, online learning, and more. Compact headset measures 6.1" W x 7.2" H with 2.8" ear cups and 4.4" boom mic. Ideal fit for small to medium head sizes
- Flexible, adjustable boom mic can be positioned at any angle; unidirectional mic reduces the background noise to ensure crisp, bright conversations (Provided that your conversation is under the correct direction of the microphone)
- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
4) Confirm Your Audio Driver Isn’t Forcing Exclusive Mode
Exclusive mode (or “allow applications to take exclusive control”) can make Discord lose the device briefly.
On Windows, open Sound settings → select your device → Device properties → Additional device properties → Advanced, then disable exclusive control options. Restart the call.
5) Reconfigure Voice Settings: Use a Stable Input Mode
If Discord is using a threshold that’s too sensitive, you’ll see audio “drop” when the mic signal dips slightly.
In Voice & Video, set Input Mode to Voice Activity (test), or if you use Push to Talk, confirm the correct keybind and that your key isn’t double-triggering.
6) Update Discord + Your Audio Drivers
Discord frequently fixes audio stack edge cases, and outdated headset drivers (Realtek, USB audio adapters, Bluetooth drivers) are a common trigger.
Update Discord to the latest stable release, then update your Windows/macOS audio drivers from the device manufacturer (or your PC OEM). Reboot and test.
7) Check Network Quality (Only if Both Mic and Playback Cut Out)
If audio gaps happen even when your mic isn’t speaking, packet loss or jitter is likely.

Use these when the instant fixes don’t fully resolve the issue. The goal is to confirm Discord has stable access to your microphone and speakers on that specific platform.
Windows (Discord Desktop App)
Most cutting-out reports trace back to the Windows audio stack: communications defaults, exclusive mode, or unstable device switching.
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Output, confirm your headset/speakers are selected. Under Input, confirm the correct microphone.
- Scroll to More sound settings → right-click your device → Properties.
- Go to Advanced: uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device and Give exclusive mode applications priority.
- Open Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video and re-select the same mic/speaker devices in Input Device and Output Device.
- Toggle Hardware Acceleration off in User Settings → Advanced, restart Discord, and test in a private call.
macOS (Discord Desktop App)
On macOS, permissions and audio input/output routing are the usual culprits.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Ensure Discord is allowed to access the microphone.
- Go to System Settings → Sound and confirm the correct Input and Output devices.
- In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video and select the matching devices under Input Device and Output Device.
- Set Noise Suppression to Off and disable Echo Cancellation for a quick test.
iPhone and iPad (Discord Mobile App)
Mobile cutouts often come from permissions, Bluetooth audio drops, or iOS call routing conflicts.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Enable microphone permission for Discord.
- In Discord, go to User Settings → confirm the correct input/output source (where available) and test in a voice channel.
- If you use Bluetooth (AirPods or other headsets), disconnect and test with wired headphones or the iPhone speaker to confirm whether the issue is Bluetooth reconnection.
- Close and reopen Discord, then fully restart your iPhone/iPad if the problem persists.
Android (Discord Mobile App)
On Android, watch for permission denial, battery optimization throttling, and unstable Bluetooth routing.
- Open Settings → Apps → Discord → Permissions.
- Enable Microphone permission.
- Disable aggressive battery optimization for Discord: Battery → Unrestricted or Don’t optimize (wording varies by brand).
- If using Bluetooth, test with a different audio output (speaker/wired) to rule out Bluetooth dropouts.
- Restart Discord and join the same voice channel again.
Web (Discord in Browser)
If you use Discord in a browser (Chrome/Edge/Firefox), permission blocking and hardware acceleration settings in the browser can matter.

Deeper Troubleshooting If the Instant Fixes Fail
If the problem keeps returning after you restart calls, you need to narrow whether it’s (1) device routing, (2) Discord voice processing, or (3) network quality.
Check whether it’s mic input or playback
In a private DM call, ask a friend to speak and observe your playback. Then test by speaking yourself and watching whether your voice level in Discord changes smoothly.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- If your mic drops: focus on Input device, noise suppression/gain/voice activity threshold, and permissions.
Reset Discord voice processing to a baseline
Create a “known good” configuration, then re-enable features one by one.
- In User Settings → Voice & Video, set Input Mode to Voice Activity.
- Set Noise Suppression to Off.
- Set Echo Cancellation to Off.
- Set Automatic Gain Control to Off if available.
- Test 2–3 minutes in a call.
If that resolves it, the cutouts are likely from Discord’s audio processing fighting your mic or driver.
Eliminate audio device switching
These cutouts often happen when your OS believes multiple devices are “available,” then swaps briefly.
- Unplug/replug USB audio devices once, then select them manually in Discord.
- Turn off Bluetooth temporarily and test with wired audio to confirm the Bluetooth hypothesis.
- If you have multiple monitors with audio (HDMI/DisplayPort), disconnect one path and test.
Investigate network jitter and packet loss
Network problems can present as intermittent audio gaps. If both your mic and playback cut out, don’t ignore this.

What to do if you only cut out when you speak (threshold issue)
If audio is perfect when silent and then drops during speech, your mic threshold is likely too aggressive.

- Stop screen recording tools and overlays temporarily.
- On Windows, reboot to clear stuck audio sessions if changes don’t “stick.”
Common Mistakes That Recreate the Problem
- Leaving Discord on the wrong device: Even if it was correct last week, Windows/macOS can change defaults after updates or driver installs.
- Conflicting audio enhancements: Don’t stack system enhancements + Discord noise suppression while testing.
- Testing for too short a time: Many Bluetooth or driver issues show up after 30–120 seconds.
- Using push-to-talk without verifying the keybind: Keyboard hooks and accessibility shortcuts can interfere.
FAQs
Why does my Discord mic cut out only sometimes?
Most commonly, it’s threshold gating (noise suppression/voice activity sensitivity) or your input device switching (Bluetooth reconnects, USB audio power changes). Try disabling noise suppression and manually selecting your input device.
Does Discord hardware acceleration cause audio cutting out?
It can. In troubleshooting, turning off Hardware Acceleration and restarting Discord is a common fix when you get stutters, choppiness, or brief dropouts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Bluetooth (like AirPods) cause Discord audio cutouts?
Yes. Bluetooth headsets frequently reconnect or change profiles under load, which can interrupt the audio stream. Test by switching to iPhone speaker, wired headphones, or a different headset.
Will reinstalling Discord fix it?
Reinstalling can help if the app’s settings/config are corrupted, but it’s usually slower than changing the audio devices, permissions, and Discord voice processing. Reinstall after you verify the device and permission fixes.
Is this a Discord outage?
Usually no—local device routing issues dominate. Outages tend to affect many users at once and are more likely accompanied by broader service reports. If only your audio cuts out, start with your device and settings.
Bottom Line
When Discord audio keeps cutting out, the fastest wins are almost always: manually selecting the correct input/output devices, disabling Discord noise suppression, and removing exclusive-mode or hardware acceleration problems (especially on Windows).
