Keep fixed slashes in the route template, then inspect each interpolated value to identify which case applies.
Find where the route’s separators come from
Start at the failing route call and inspect the values immediately before it. If an interpolation contains the entire URL or path, the helper cannot distinguish trusted path structure from data. If the template already contains the path structure, inspect each dynamic path segment for characters such as / that may be interpreted as separators.

Cause 1: the whole path was assembled before the call
Fixed path separators belong in the tagged template, not inside a string interpolated as one value. For example, use route`/rest/api/3/issue/${issueKey}` rather than first assembling a URL and passing it as route`${url}`. The latter gives the helper one dynamic string containing both structure and data.

How to repair it
- Move the fixed route text and slashes into the
routetemplate literal. - Interpolate only the individual dynamic path components, such as an issue key.
- Check that no interpolation still contains a prebuilt URL or multi-segment path.
Cause 2: a dynamic path segment contains structural data
A route can be structured correctly and still fail when runtime data contains a slash. For example, a Bitbucket branch or tag name may include /, even when the application intends to treat the name as one path segment.
Choose the fix that matches the value
- One segment: If the value is meant to remain a single segment, encode that component with
encodeURIComponent(value). A community report describes this resolving the error for slash-containing branch and tag names. - An identifier with a defined format: Validate it against that format and reject or normalize values that do not qualify. Do this only when normalization preserves the identifier’s meaning.
- Multiple route segments: Do not encode or concatenate the whole route blindly. Represent fixed separators in the template and handle each intended component separately.
Encode the component, not the whole route
Encoding should reflect what the value means. Encoding a slash can keep a branch or tag name within one segment, but encoding an entire route or query string can change how the request is interpreted. The reported implementation details also say dots remain unchanged under encodeURIComponent, so encoding alone may not address every value that a particular helper version rejects.
Check the installed @forge/api version
Route-helper behavior can depend on the package version. A developer article reports reproducing behavior with @forge/api 6.4.3 and 8.0.4; those are the author’s test contexts, not a guarantee for later releases. The same article reports a path-position blocklist involving slash, backslash, question mark, hash, and doubled-dot forms. Treat those character-level details as author-reported behavior, and inspect the exact installed package before relying on edge cases.
Rank #2
You can test the behavior locally with a small Node probe that imports the installed package; this does not require deploying a Forge app. Confirm the package version used by that probe matches the version in the app that throws the error.
Use trusted-route escapes only for trusted input
assumeTrustedRoute is a trust assertion, not a sanitization function. The community discussion and developer article describe it as bypassing the ordinary path check for a trusted route. Do not use it as a blanket workaround for URLs or path components derived from user input or other untrusted data.

Quick diagnosis
- If a single interpolation contains a whole URL or path, put the route structure in the template.
- If the template has fixed path separators but a dynamic value contains
/or other structural text, encode or validate that component according to its intended meaning. - If behavior hinges on a particular character, verify it against the exact installed
@forge/apiversion. - If considering
assumeTrustedRoute, use it only when the complete route string is controlled and trusted.
