In most cases, the game is reading the wrong input device, the mic is blocked by Windows privacy, or Voice settings are set to the wrong mode (Push-to-talk vs Open Mic).
This guide walks you through the fastest fixes first, then deeper steps if your mic still stays silent. Everything is written for 2024-era Windows setups (Windows 10/11) and standard headsets/USB mics.

Why CS:GO mic issues happen
CS:GO voice is sensitive to how your operating system and audio drivers expose input devices. A typical failure looks like: Windows hears your mic, but CS:GO shows no input level; or CS:GO input meters move but your teammates never hear you.

Common causes include:
- Wrong default microphone selected in CS:GO
- Windows microphone access denied for the app
- Push-to-talk bound incorrectly or not pressed
- Microphone muted at the headset (hardware switch)
- Audio enhancements or voice effects interfering with capture
- Corrupted CS:GO voice config or mismatched launch/driver settings
- Conflicts from audio apps (Discord overlays, Voicemeeter, exclusive mode)
Quick checks in 5 minutes
Before changing anything, verify the basics. These checks solve a surprising number of cases.
- Unmute the mic physically: check the headset mute button and any inline USB controller.
- Test in Windows: open Sound settings and confirm your mic level moves when you speak (steps below).
- Confirm you’re on the right device: if you recently changed headsets/USB mics, your “default” device may have changed.
- Switch Voice mode: toggle between Push-to-talk and Open Mic to see whether anything changes.
Fix Windows audio and mic permissions (Windows 10/11)
On Windows 10/11, the mic can be blocked at the privacy level. If that’s the case, CS:GO won’t receive input no matter what you set in-game.
Check microphone privacy access
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security -> Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Scroll to Let apps access your microphone and ensure it’s enabled.
- Find CS:GO/Steam entries if they appear and allow access. If you don’t see CS:GO specifically, ensure Steam has mic access and that microphone access is not blocked globally.
Verify input level in Windows
- Open Settings -> System -> Sound.
- Under Input, select your mic.
- Watch the Test your microphone level meter while you speak.
If the meter doesn’t move, CS:GO won’t work either—fix Windows/input first.
Set the correct input device inside CS:GO
Even when Windows recognizes your mic, CS:GO may still capture from a different device (like “Microphone (2- USB Audio Device)” or a controller mic you never use).
Choose the right device
- Launch CS:GO.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Audio.
- Find Microphone or Voice Input Device.
- Select your actual headset/USB mic.
- Speak while you’re in the menu and watch for voice input/indicator changes.
Reset input volume in CS:GO
- In Audio, lower any extreme values first (for example, if your mic volume is maxed).
- Set microphone sensitivity so the in-game voice meter reacts normally when you talk.
- Leave a few seconds between changes—CS:GO can take a moment to update voice behavior.
Fix Voice settings in CS:GO (Push-to-talk vs Open Mic)
If your teammates say they can’t hear you, your voice mode is often wrong. Push-to-talk issues are the most common: the game is fine, but you’re not actually transmitting.

Confirm Push-to-talk binding
- In CS:GO, open Settings.
- Go to Keyboard/Mouse.
- Find Push to talk.
- Bind it to a key you can reliably press (many players use T or MB4).
- Confirm there’s no conflicting binding in the same menu.
Toggle Open Mic to test
To verify whether voice capture works at all, switch to Open Mic temporarily.
- Open Settings -> Audio.
- Set Voice mode to Open Mic.
- Speak and watch whether the voice indicator activates.
If Open Mic works but Push-to-talk doesn’t, the problem is your binding or an input conflict.

Verify your mic works outside CS:GO
This step narrows the issue fast: if your mic fails everywhere, you’re dealing with hardware or driver problems. If it works in other apps but not CS:GO, focus on CS:GO settings.
Quick test in Windows Voice Recorder
- Search for and open Voice Recorder.
- Record 5–10 seconds and play it back.
- If the recording is silent, fix the mic/driver first.
Test in Steam or a voice app
- Open Steam voice chat if available, or use Discord.
- Confirm the correct input device is selected.
- Speak and see that the app shows incoming audio.
Then return to CS:GO and match the same input device name.
Clear common CS:GO voice/config problems
When settings get corrupted, CS:GO can behave like your mic is muted even if Windows is fine. This section covers safe resets.

Reset CS:GO voice settings
- Close CS:GO.
- Open File Explorer and go to your CS:GO config folder (commonly under Steam):
Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\cfg. - Look for voice-related configs (for example:
config.cfgand any custom files you created). - Rename any custom voice/config files (for example add
.bak), then relaunch the game.
If your mic works after renaming, your custom settings are the cause.
Reset in-game settings quickly
- In CS:GO, return to Settings.
- Re-select your mic input device.
- Set Voice mode back to your preferred mode (Push-to-talk or Open Mic).
- Re-bind Push-to-talk if you use it.
Update and reset audio drivers
Audio driver bugs can break microphone capture or cause exclusive-mode conflicts. A clean driver refresh often fixes stubborn mic problems.
Update drivers
- Right-click Start -> Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers and Audio inputs and outputs.
- Right-click your audio device/mic input -> Update driver.
- Also consider checking the headset/audio interface manufacturer site (for example, Realtek or the headset vendor) for newer versions.
Reset Windows audio enhancements
- Go to Settings -> System -> Sound.
- Under Input, select your microphone.
- Open Device properties and disable any audio enhancements or special “voice” features.
- Restart CS:GO after applying changes.
When you use special hardware (headsets, USB mics, Bluetooth)
Some devices expose multiple “virtual” microphones. Bluetooth headsets are notorious for switching profiles and sending the wrong input to games.
USB headsets and USB mics
- Unplug and plug the USB device back in.
- Confirm the Windows input device name matches what CS:GO uses.
- If your device has both “Headset Microphone” and “Stereo Mix” entries, choose the microphone one.
Bluetooth headsets
- Ensure the headset is connected and not automatically switching modes.
- In Windows Sound settings, select the correct input profile.
- In CS:GO, explicitly pick the matching Bluetooth microphone.
If you still get silence, try a wired headset/USB mic to confirm the rest of your setup is fine.
Troubleshoot network/voice server quirks
Voice issues can also show up when matchmaking/servers don’t route voice the way you expect. This is less common than local settings, but it’s worth testing.

- Join another match (or a community server) and test mic again.

- If voice works on one server but not another, check server rules (some disable voice or enforce restrictions).
Repair game files and reinstall only if needed
If none of the settings checks work, the next step is to repair CS:GO files. This fixes rare cases where voice/config resources are corrupted.
Repair CS:GO in Steam
- Open Steam -> Library.
- Right-click Counter-Strike: Global Offensive -> Properties.
- Go to Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for completion, then relaunch CS:GO and test voice again.
Last resort: fresh config
If repair doesn’t help, consider removing only your custom config files (rename them first) and letting CS:GO regenerate defaults. Full reinstall is usually slower than a config reset, but it can help if the installation itself is corrupted.
Common mistakes that keep the mic muted
- Using the wrong device name: CS:GO and Windows can list microphones differently.
- Push-to-talk not bound or bound to a key you never press.
- Threshold/sensitivity too high: your voice indicator never triggers.
- Exclusive mode conflicts: some audio apps grab the mic exclusively.
- Third-party overlays (Voicemeeter-style tools) changing capture behavior.
- Mic muted in multiple places: headset button + Windows mute + in-game setting.
Troubleshooting checklist (if it still doesn’t work)
When your mic is still silent, use this strict order. It prevents you from changing five variables at once and losing your trail.
- Confirm Windows input meter moves while speaking.
- In Windows, ensure CS:GO/Steam mic access is allowed.
- In CS:GO Audio settings, set the correct microphone device explicitly.
- Set Voice mode to Open Mic for a test.
- Switch back to Push-to-talk and re-bind the key if Open Mic works.
- Repair game files in Steam.
- Update/reinstall audio driver (or roll back to a known working version if a recent update broke it).
- Rename config files and relaunch to regenerate defaults.
FAQ
Why does the mic indicator move, but teammates can’t hear me?
That usually points to voice mode mismatch (Push-to-talk not actually transmitting), a server setting, or incorrect input device routing. Confirm Voice mode and re-check your Push-to-talk binding.

Does Windows microphone privacy block CS:GO voice?
Yes. If Microphone access or app access is disabled in Windows privacy settings, CS:GO can’t capture audio even if your headset works in other apps.
Open Mic works, but Push-to-talk doesn’t—what should I check?
Rebind Push to talk in CS:GO’s Keyboard/Mouse settings, then ensure there’s no conflicting control bind. Also test in a fresh match to rule out server-side voice restrictions.
Can corrupted CS:GO config files cause mic problems?
Yes. Custom voice/config files can override defaults. Renaming your CS:GO cfg files (or specific voice-related configs) forces CS:GO to regenerate clean defaults.
Bottom Line
Most CS:GO mic not working cases come down to one of three things: the wrong input device, Windows microphone permissions, or Push-to-talk settings/bindings. Fix those first, in that order, and you’ll resolve the majority of issues quickly.
If you’ve verified your mic works in Windows and Open Mic works in CS:GO, focus on Push-to-talk bindings and device selection. If nothing reacts, move to driver updates and Steam file verification before reinstalling.
