If you see unsupported_country_region_territory, request_forbidden, or “Country, region, or territory not supported,” first check whether the message concerns ChatGPT or the OpenAI API. Each has its own official supported-location list. If your location is listed and the error continues, contact OpenAI support with the error details; the available official guidance does not establish a guaranteed technical fix.
First, identify which service is showing the error
ChatGPT web and mobile access and the OpenAI API have separate supported-location references. Check the page for the product you are actually using rather than assuming that one list covers both.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT supported-locations page warns that accessing or offering access to ChatGPT from outside its listed locations may result in an account being blocked or suspended. Do not try to bypass geographic availability with a VPN, proxy, false account location, or another workaround. The official API page is the relevant reference for API availability; do not infer API eligibility solely from the ChatGPT list.

If your location is listed but the error persists
The official availability pages establish which locations are supported, but they do not provide error-specific troubleshooting steps or explain exactly how this message is triggered. They do not establish that a particular network change, account change, or device fix will resolve it.
- Note whether the failure occurs in ChatGPT web, a ChatGPT mobile app, or an API request.
- Record the exact error text and code, when it occurred, and the country where you were physically using the service.
- For an API failure, include relevant request context that you can safely share. Do not include API keys, passwords, or other secrets.
- Contact OpenAI through the support channel for the service. Explain that your location appears on the applicable supported list and provide the details above.
This information can help support understand the report, but it is not an official error-specific diagnostic checklist and cannot determine the cause of an individual failure.

What the error wording does—and does not—tell you
The literal wording “Country, region, or territory not supported,” alongside unsupported_country_region_territory and request_forbidden, appears in public technical coverage. That confirms the phrasing people may encounter, not how OpenAI determines or enforces location availability. An unofficial article attributes the error to location checks and discusses possible workarounds, but those implementation claims are not confirmed by the official location pages.
For API users in particular, the cited API documentation identifies the supported-location reference; it does not establish exact status-code semantics, egress-IP rules, deployment-region behavior, or a specific geolocation mechanism. Avoid treating the error code alone as proof of any one cause.
