If copy or paste has stopped working in Command Prompt, first exit full-screen mode, then try right-clicking inside the console to paste. In the classic console interaction, you can select text with the mouse and press Enter or right-click to copy it. Ctrl+V may also work, but support depends on the Windows version and the console host.
Try the console’s built-in mouse actions
- Leave full-screen mode. Return to a windowed Command Prompt and try again; classic QuickEdit guidance says paste is unavailable while Command Prompt or a DOS program is running full-screen. Microsoft Q&A guidance
- Paste with a right-click. Click in the Command Prompt body with the right mouse button. This is the classic console paste action described in the same Q&A guidance.
- Copy console text using the mouse. In the classic QuickEdit workflow, drag to select text, then press Enter or right-click to copy the selection.
- Try Ctrl+V as an alternative. A Microsoft employee answer says newer Windows 10 builds support Ctrl+V in CMD, but this should not be assumed to work in every version or host. If it fails, use right-click paste and check which console host is open. Microsoft Q&A answer
These are classic console interactions; the exact behavior can vary with the Windows release and the app hosting the console.
Work out whether copying, pasting, or both are failing
Test a short, harmless piece of text rather than a command that could change files or settings. Copy text from another app and paste it into a different app. Then copy a small selection from Command Prompt and paste it elsewhere.
- If text copied from another app pastes into other apps but not Command Prompt, focus on Command Prompt’s interaction settings and console host.
- If Command Prompt text will not copy out, test its mouse-selection and copy actions separately from paste.
- If copying or pasting also fails in unrelated apps, the cause may extend beyond Command Prompt, such as a keyboard shortcut or clipboard problem. These tests help narrow the issue; they do not identify a cause by themselves.
Check the console host on Windows 11
Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows Terminal became the default app for hosting console windows. Microsoft notes that some apps mixing graphical and text-mode elements can have compatibility issues with the newer host. If the problem began after a Windows update, or affects a particular console app, try selecting Windows Console Host and retesting. Microsoft’s console host guidance

Microsoft documents these ways to choose Windows Console Host; Settings labels may change in later Windows releases:
- Open Settings > System > Advanced > Terminal, then select Windows Console Host as the default terminal application.
- In Windows Terminal, open Settings > Startup > Default terminal application and choose Windows Console Host.
- From an open Windows Console Host window, right-click its title bar, choose Properties, and select Windows Console Host.
After changing the default host, open a new Command Prompt window and retry copy and paste. If the relevant setting is not present under that exact path in your Windows release, use one of Microsoft’s other documented routes.

Investigate the keyboard only if shortcuts fail elsewhere
If Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V fails in several unrelated apps, compare keyboard input with the on-screen keyboard or test another keyboard. A Microsoft Q&A user reported that replacing a keyboard fixed a system-wide shortcut problem, but that single report does not establish keyboard failure as a usual cause of Command Prompt-only paste problems. Microsoft Q&A user report
Keep the troubleshooting proportional: if right-click works and only Ctrl+V fails in Command Prompt, focus on the console host or shortcut behavior rather than replacing hardware.
