If Ventoy starts a Windows VHD/VHDX but Windows never shows the VeraCrypt pre-boot password prompt, the cause may be a documented compatibility limit—not a bad password or a faulty USB drive. VeraCrypt says it does not support pre-boot authentication for operating systems installed inside VHD/VHDX files when they are booted natively. Ventoy’s VHD plugin can boot Windows VHD(X) files, but its support does not override that VeraCrypt limitation.
First identify which boot stage is failing
“Ventoy error” can describe several different failures. The fix depends on whether the machine reaches Ventoy, whether Ventoy can hand off to the VHD, and whether VeraCrypt can authenticate the Windows installation.
- Before the Ventoy menu: investigate firmware and Secure Boot.
- VHD missing or failing during handoff: check the file location, plugin image, and filesystem requirements.
- Windows starts but the VeraCrypt pre-boot prompt is absent or unusable: check VeraCrypt’s VHD/VHDX limitation before changing unrelated Ventoy settings.
- A Windows ISO fails to boot: Ventoy’s WIMBOOT option may be relevant, but it is not a fix for encrypted VHD authentication.
Can Ventoy boot a VeraCrypt-encrypted Windows VHD?
Ventoy documents support for booting Windows 7 and later from VHD(X) files, using Legacy BIOS or UEFI and fixed or dynamic VHD(X) files. Separately, VeraCrypt states in its Known Issues & Limitations documentation: “VeraCrypt does not support pre-boot authentication for operating systems installed within VHD/VHDX files, except when booted using appropriate virtual-machine software such as Microsoft Virtual PC.” VeraCrypt says the limitation also applies to native-boot VHD/VHDX files.
That distinction matters: Ventoy’s Windows VHD Boot Plugin describes how to boot the virtual disk; it does not claim to make VeraCrypt’s unsupported native-boot pre-authentication path work. VeraCrypt describes pre-boot authentication as entering the correct password before Windows boots, and its system-encryption documentation discusses system encryption in that context.

- Beginner-Friendly Interface: Easy to install and use via ventoy background menu utility with an improved menu, better keyboard handling, updated applets, and a polished user experience
- Excellent Hardware Compatibility: Most of the distros should work out of the box, though compatibility with different configurations can result in variable results, so if any particular distro does not work then you can try others, with these distros being mostly 64-bit and some may be compatible with 32-bit computers as well
- Pre-Installed Productivity Software: Most distros include web browser, office suite, media players, backup tools, software manager, and system utilities right out of the box
- Open-Source Operating System: Free and open-source desktop environment that provides transparency, security, and community-driven development
So if the VHD reaches its boot stage but the expected VeraCrypt prompt does not appear, repeatedly changing USB drives, WIMBOOT settings, or Secure Boot options is unlikely to address the documented limitation. The cited exception refers to appropriate virtual-machine software, not Ventoy’s native VHD boot handoff; the documentation does not establish that every VM configuration will work.
Check Ventoy’s VHD plugin setup
These checks can resolve ordinary plugin or storage problems. They cannot remove VeraCrypt’s native-boot VHD/VHDX authentication limit.

- Put the plugin image in the right place. Download
ventoy_vhdboot.imgand place it in the/ventoy/directory on the Ventoy data partition. Create that directory if it is missing. Do not put the image in the small VTOYEFI partition. - Check the filesystem against the Windows version. Ventoy specifies NTFS for the partition storing VHD(X) files when using Windows 10 version 1803 or earlier. For Windows 10 version 1809 or later, it lists NTFS or exFAT.
- Confirm the VHD(X) is visible to Ventoy. Make sure the file is on the Ventoy data partition and that Ventoy lists it. If it is missing, investigate file placement and storage format before troubleshooting VeraCrypt.
- Consider plugin-image compatibility only when the failure points there. Ventoy notes that boot-manager compatibility can vary and offers different versions of
ventoy_vhdboot.imgto test. Its documentation does not identify one universally correct version; choose a test based on the exact error and the Ventoy release, Windows version, and firmware mode in use.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The machine fails before Ventoy starts
This points to a firmware or Secure Boot path, not to VeraCrypt’s VHD pre-boot support. Follow Ventoy’s Secure Boot instructions for the machine’s firmware. Secure Boot enrollment behavior can vary by machine; Ventoy notes that if the expected enrollment flow fails, disabling Ventoy’s Secure Boot option and Secure Boot in firmware may be necessary for that system. Changing Secure Boot does not resolve VeraCrypt’s VHD/VHDX limitation.
The VHD is missing or Ventoy cannot hand it off
Check that the VHD(X) is stored on the Ventoy data partition, that ventoy_vhdboot.img is in /ventoy/, and that the filesystem matches the Windows-version conditions above. If Ventoy reports a boot-manager compatibility problem, testing another plugin-image version may help isolate it; the documentation does not prescribe a single version for all systems.

A bootloader error appears or the VeraCrypt prompt is missing
Determine whether Windows is installed inside a VHD/VHDX that is being booted natively, or whether the VHD is running as a guest inside a virtual machine. For native boot, VeraCrypt’s documented limitation is directly relevant. A bootloader error alone does not prove a password problem, a Ventoy bug, or a hardware fault.
A Windows ISO fails to boot
Ventoy’s WIMBOOT mode is an alternate boot method for official Windows ISO files and some WinPE ISO files when default ISO booting has problems. It is not documented as a workaround for VeraCrypt authentication in a Windows VHD/VHDX.

An image boot fails for an unclear reason
Ventoy’s FAQ recommends checking whether the image is corrupted when image booting fails. That is a useful general check when the failure is not yet localized, but image integrity does not change VeraCrypt’s documented pre-boot limitation.
