First identify what cannot find Codex
“Unable to locate Codex CLI binary” can describe two different problems. If you type codex in a terminal and Windows reports that the command is not recognized or cannot be found, you are troubleshooting command-line installation or environment selection. If a desktop app reports that it cannot find a CLI executable, that is an app-integration issue; a terminal installation command alone does not establish that the app can locate its executable.

Before changing anything, note the exact command or app action that failed, the full error text, the shell you were using, and how you installed Codex. Those details help distinguish a failed installation from a mismatch between PowerShell and WSL.

OpenAI’s documentation treats native PowerShell execution and the Linux sandbox in WSL2 as distinct environments. A command-line program installed for one environment should not be assumed to be available in the other. The Help Center describes Codex support on Windows as experimental and says it may require WSL. See OpenAI’s Windows guidance and the Codex sandbox documentation.

- PowerShell: Use the PowerShell installation route if you intend to run Codex from PowerShell.
- WSL: If you intend to work in a WSL shell, follow the applicable official Windows/WSL guidance and check whether Codex was installed in that environment. Do not assume a PowerShell installation makes the command available inside WSL.
- Desktop app: If only an app cannot locate the executable, record the app name and its exact message; the available installation instructions do not establish a universal fix for app integration.
Use an official installation route
The OpenAI-maintained Codex repository documents a PowerShell installer, an npm package, and downloadable release binaries. Choose based on the method you already used and the shell in which you want to run Codex; the documentation does not identify one route as best for every Windows 11 setup. The repository’s installation instructions were accessed October 7, 2026; check them for changes before installing.
PowerShell installer
In PowerShell, run the documented command:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1 | iex"The standalone installer downloads from https://releases.openai.com/codex by default and falls back to GitHub Releases if metadata or an asset download is unavailable. If you need to force the documented GitHub Releases route, set the environment variable in PowerShell before invoking the installer:

If you use npm, the repository documents this global installation command:
npm install -g @openai/codexRelease download
The repository also offers downloadable release binaries. Use its release instructions to select the appropriate download rather than guessing a file location or binary name.

Try the launch command in the same shell
After installation, the repository says to run codex. Run it in the same shell and environment where you installed the CLI. If it still fails, capture the exact command, full error output, shell (PowerShell or WSL), and installation method. That information is needed to narrow the cause; the official documentation does not provide a machine-specific diagnosis or a complete decision tree for this exact error.

What not to assume
- A command-not-found error by itself does not prove that the installer failed; it may reflect a shell or environment mismatch.
- Do not apply a PATH change, file-location fix, or desktop-app setting based only on this wording. The available official instructions do not establish one universal repair.
- If you are unsure which environment is active, identify the terminal first, then follow installation guidance for that environment.
