Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe fix depends on the file you need: a viewport screenshot, a full-page image, or a PDF using print layout. Chrome’s --screenshot and --print-to-pdf produce different outputs. A taller --window-size can show more of a known page in a viewport screenshot; capturing the entire document requires a full-page capture operation. If you need the site’s print CSS, create a PDF.
First identify the output you expect
| What you need | Use | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport image | --screenshot |
The rendered view at the selected viewport size. Raising the viewport height can reveal a known amount of content. |
| Full-document image | DevTools Protocol Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true, or an automation wrapper with full-page capture |
A clip sized to the document rather than just the initial viewport. |
| Print-layout document | --print-to-pdf |
A paginated PDF rendered through Chrome’s print pipeline, where print CSS can apply. |
Chrome documents the screenshot and PDF flags separately. A PNG of the screen is not a print preview, and a PDF is not a full-page PNG. If you want print styling but must deliver a raster image, render to PDF and rasterize it, or use an automation library that lets you select print media; verify the result because the exact steps depend on the library.

Make a viewport screenshot taller
For a page whose relevant content fits within a known CSS viewport, set its dimensions explicitly. Chrome’s CLI reference documents --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT for screenshot captures.
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,2000 https://example.com/
Replace the example URL and dimensions with your target. This changes the viewport used for the capture; it does not reliably capture an arbitrarily long document. Check the saved image’s pixel dimensions and compare the visible area with the target viewport and the page’s document height. If the page is longer than the selected viewport, use a full-page capture method instead.

Capture the full document with the DevTools Protocol
For content below the fold, use Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true. The protocol method exposes this option; Chromium’s Page implementation obtains full-page dimensions and uses them for the capture clip. An automation wrapper that offers full-page screenshots can perform this work for you. The exact wrapper API varies, so consult its documentation rather than assuming that a larger initial viewport is equivalent.
For unusually tall pages, the browser can reject a capture that exceeds its image-size limits. Chromium’s current source includes a “Page is too large” rejection path. If that happens, consider capturing sections separately or generating a PDF, then verify the resulting dimensions and output. This is implementation behavior: check the Chrome or Chromium version you run, since living protocol and source references may change.

Generate a PDF when you want print layout
Use Chrome’s print pipeline if the intended output is paginated and should reflect the page’s print rules, such as @media print and @page.
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.com/
--no-pdf-header-footer removes Chrome’s PDF header and footer furniture; it does not fix a screenshot crop. Chrome’s current command-line reference says this flag replaced the older --print-to-pdf-no-header name, so an older installed version may need the old spelling. Inspect the page’s print CSS if content disappears or changes size in the PDF.

Wait for content that loads after navigation
A capture can be incomplete even when the chosen capture mode is correct. The CLI --timeout sets a maximum wait before Chrome captures, including while the page is still loading; it is not proof that application content, images, or fonts are ready. Chrome also documents --virtual-time-budget for time-dependent JavaScript.
chrome --headless --screenshot --timeout=5000 https://example.com/
This allows up to five seconds before capture, but a timeout ceiling cannot guarantee that a particular component has rendered. In an automated workflow, wait for the specific selector, image, font, or application-ready signal your page requires before taking the screenshot. Use virtual time when the page’s behavior depends on JavaScript timers, and verify the captured output.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The bottom of a short, known section is missing | The viewport is shorter than the area you want to show. | Set a suitable --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT and inspect the output dimensions. |
| Content below the fold is missing from a long page | A viewport screenshot captures only its viewport. | Use a full-page API with captureBeyondViewport: true or a wrapper’s full-page option. |
| The screenshot does not match the print preview | You captured screen layout rather than print layout. | Use --print-to-pdf and inspect the page’s print CSS. Rasterize the PDF if the final deliverable must be an image. |
| Images or dynamic content are absent | Capture occurred before that content was ready. | Wait for the relevant content or application-ready condition. Treat --timeout as a maximum wait, not a readiness signal. |
| Chrome reports “Page is too large” | The full-page image exceeds an implementation limit. | Try segmented captures or PDF output; check the final file dimensions and your installed Chrome version. |
| Chrome rejects the PDF header/footer flag | The installed version may use the older option name. | Check the Chrome version and try --print-to-pdf-no-header on an older release. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than managing headless Chrome yourself, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the example page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing `–window-size` capture the whole page?
No. It sets the screenshot viewport dimensions. Use a full-page capture operation for content beyond that viewport.
Which Chrome output uses print CSS?
`–print-to-pdf` uses Chrome’s print pipeline. `–screenshot` captures an image of the rendered viewport unless you use a full-page capture operation.
