Candidate-based input relies on Android’s composition system, while terminal apps often prioritize raw key events such as Ctrl, Esc, and Tab. Try the diagnostic steps and workarounds below; which one works depends on the terminal app, its version, Android build, and keyboard.
Why Chinese and Japanese input can fail
Pinyin and kana-to-kanji input are composition workflows. The keyboard first builds text and presents candidates; choosing one commits characters to the editor. Android’s InputConnection API defines how an editor and an input method editor (IME) exchange composing and committed text. The app must handle that exchange for the selected characters to appear.

A terminal is not always implemented like a regular text field. It may prioritize terminal key events over editable text, or its input path may not handle the IME’s composing or committed text as expected. In either case, the keyboard can show candidates even though the terminal does not receive the final text. Android notes that IME behavior varies and recommends testing editors with multiple IMEs, including for languages such as Chinese and Japanese.

Its TerminalView source normally declares InputType.TYPE_NULL, which its comments describe as the most correct input type for its existing terminal behavior. The source also implements handling for commitText and finishComposingText. Raw key handling and IME text entry therefore have to coexist; the source does not support the claim that Termux ignores all committed text.

Diagnose where the text disappears
- Check the keyboard in an ordinary text field. Type ASCII, then use Pinyin or kana input, select a candidate, and confirm that the characters appear in the field.
- Repeat in the Android SSH terminal. If the same IME commits Chinese or Japanese text in the ordinary field but not in this terminal, focus troubleshooting on the terminal app’s input path. This points toward the app but does not prove a single cause.
- Note what happens before and after selecting a candidate. If composition or the candidate list appears but the chosen characters vanish, the problem may be in handling the commit, not in generating candidates.
Try a text-entry view or paste route
Some terminal apps provide a separate text-entry control that can pass normal text into the terminal. A Termux user report describes swiping the extra-key bar to reveal a text input view, entering text there, and pasting candidates into the session. The report also describes manually showing the soft keyboard when a physical keyboard is attached. These are reported workarounds, not guaranteed steps for every Termux version or setup. Check the app’s version and IME settings
Look in the terminal app’s settings and current release notes for an option that explicitly supports IME composition or text input. A Termux pull request from August 2026 proposed an opt-in setting called “IME Composing Preview”: composing text would appear before it was committed through the terminal input path. The pull request was open when checked on October 7, 2026, so its existence does not establish that the feature is in a stable release. Check the status and availability for the version you have installed at pull request #5242.

Decide whether to change terminal apps
If the app offers no suitable text-entry route, check another terminal’s documentation for specific claims about both composing and committed text. For example, VibeTerm’s FAQ says its implementation uses Android text input and sends committed text as UTF-8 through SSH while retaining control keys. That is the vendor’s description of its implementation, not an independent comparison or a guarantee for every device, IME, or connection.

- Does it handle both composing text and committed text through Android’s text-input interface?
- Can you see composition before committing a Chinese or Japanese candidate?
- Do Ctrl, Esc, Tab, and other control keys remain usable?
- Is the feature in the version you can install, or merely proposed or documented for another version?
- Does it work with your software keyboard and, if relevant, your physical-keyboard setup?
Available sources do not establish an independently tested ranking of Android SSH terminals for CJK input. A product’s documentation can guide what to try, but your installed version and setup determine the result.
Why changing keyboards may not help
A different Chinese or Japanese IME may behave differently, so trying one can be useful as a diagnostic. But an IME cannot force an app to accept composition callbacks it does not handle: that interaction is between the keyboard and the editor’s InputConnection. Android’s guidance is to test editors with multiple IMEs because their behavior can vary; see the official API reference.

Physical keyboards are not a general fix
A physical keyboard may help with terminal control keys, but it does not necessarily restore Pinyin or kana composition. In the Termux report, attaching a Bluetooth or USB keyboard left the reporter with ASCII input and removed the Chinese candidate bar; the report says enforce-char-based-input = true did not restore composition in that setup. This is one environment-specific report, not a universal rule. Read its details in issue #5290 before treating a physical keyboard as the solution.

If the problem continues
- Record the terminal app and version, Android version, IME, and whether you are using a software or physical keyboard.
- Describe whether ASCII works, whether the candidate list appears, and what happens when you select a candidate.
- Check the app’s issue tracker or support materials for reports involving your specific IME and version. A report matching your setup is a useful lead, not proof that every similar failure has the same cause.
- If reporting a bug, include those details and distinguish text entered through a workaround from text committed directly by the IME.
