Fix: Can’t Move The Folder Because There Is A Folder in The Same Location

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This error shows up when your system refuses to move a folder because a folder with the same name already exists at the destination path. It can be confusing because you’re not always doing anything “wrong”—the conflict is simply detected by Windows or macOS during the move operation.

The good news: in most cases you can resolve it by renaming, moving into a new destination folder, or using a command-line approach that gives you more control. Below is a complete playbook for both Windows and macOS, including permission and sync-related causes.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What the error means (and why it happens)

When you attempt to move a folder, your file manager (File Explorer or Finder) checks the target location. If there’s already a folder at the destination with the same name, Windows/macOS can stop the operation to prevent overwriting or creating ambiguous results.

Typical causes include a leftover folder from a previous failed attempt, a sync tool (OneDrive/iCloud Drive) recreating folders, or path/permission rules that prevent clean replacement.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Before you change anything: quick checks

  • Identify the source and destination paths. Note the exact destination folder name and where you’re trying to move into.
  • Check for existing folders in the target location. Even if you can’t see it clearly, it may exist under a similar name.
  • Confirm you’re not moving into the same folder or a subfolder of itself (including mounted drives or mapped network shares).
  • Close anything using the files in the folder (editors, terminals, virtual machine mounts, sync clients).

Fix on Windows (File Explorer)

Start with the simplest UI-based resolutions. Most “folder in the same location” errors are solved by avoiding name collisions or by creating a new destination folder.

Confirm the destination and folder name

Open the destination parent folder in File Explorer. Make sure the folder you’re moving doesn’t already exist there with the same name.

If you see it, either delete the existing folder (only if you’re sure), or rename it to a unique name before retrying the move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rename the source folder first

On the source side, right-click the folder > Rename. Change it to a unique name (for example, append -new or include a date like Project-2026-05).

Then move/drag it again to the destination.

Move into a new destination folder

Create a new, empty folder inside the destination parent folder. Example: create Uploads or Archive_2026-05.

Then move the original folder into that newly created destination folder. This avoids collisions at the parent level.

Use Cut/Paste correctly vs drag-and-drop

Sometimes drag-and-drop triggers a different behavior than Cut/Paste (especially across drives or sync locations). Try this workflow instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the source folder > Cut.
  2. Navigate to the destination parent folder.
  3. Right-click inside the destination > Paste.

If you get a prompt about what to do with existing items, choose the option that matches your intent (for example, replace only when you’re sure).

Check permissions and ownership

If the destination is protected (system folders, network shares, or another user’s profile), Windows may block the move and present a generic error.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Right-click the destination folder > Properties.
  2. Open the Security tab.
  3. Click Edit and confirm your account has Modify permission (at minimum).

If you don’t have permission, move the folder to a writable location (like C:\Temp or your Documents) and then copy/move from there.

Handle OneDrive/Sync conflicts

If your source or destination is inside OneDrive, it can hold or recreate folders during the move. That can trigger repeated conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pause OneDrive sync (click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray > Settings > Pause syncing for 2 hours).
  2. Retry the move.
  3. If it works, resume sync afterward.

Also check for “pending changes” if you see syncing status indicators on the destination.

Shorten the path to avoid path-length issues

Windows can fail moves when the resulting full path becomes too long (especially with deeply nested folders). This can surface as a generic move failure.

  1. Move the folder to a short path first, like C:\Temp.
  2. Then move it from C:\Temp to the final destination.

If you’re moving into something like C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Very Long Folder Names…, shortening usually helps.

Fix on Windows (Command Prompt / PowerShell)

When File Explorer keeps failing, command-line tools can give you clearer control. Always verify paths before running commands, especially when you use forced options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try a rename to a temporary name

This approach removes the name collision by changing the folder name before moving.

  1. Open Command Prompt (type cmd in Start).
  2. Run:

ren "C:\path\to\OldFolder"

ren "C:\path\to\OldFolder" "OldFolder.tmp"

  1. Confirm the renamed folder exists at the source location.
  2. Now move OldFolder.tmp to the destination (or rename it again after the move).

If you still hit the “folder already exists” error, it usually means something at the destination is recreating the folder or that the destination already contains the exact final name you’re trying to create.

Use robocopy for a controlled move

robocopy is great when you want to move data reliably and avoid some of the limitations of the GUI. It can also copy first, then remove the source, so you have a safer workflow.

  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Example (copy + then remove source):

  1. In Command Prompt, run:

robocopy "C:\path\to\SourceFolder" "C:\path\to\DestFolder\SourceFolder" /E /MOVE /COPY:DAT /DCOPY:DAT /R:2 /W:5

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to change: replace SourceFolder and the destination path with your real paths. The key part is /MOVE, which moves contents after copying.

If your destination already has the target folder, robocopy may still behave differently than File Explorer depending on how you specify the destination. That’s why it’s worth making the destination either unique (new subfolder) or intentionally targeted.

Use PowerShell Move-Item with force options

PowerShell can help when you need to handle locked files, hidden items, or existing destination states more explicitly. Use it carefully and double-check your paths.

Try:

Move-Item -Path "C:\path\to\SourceFolder" -Destination "C:\path\to\DestParent\SourceFolder" -Force

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the destination parent already contains an item that blocks the move, create a new destination folder name first and target that folder. For example:

New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path "C:\path\to\DestParent\SourceFolder_tmp"

Then move into it:

Move-Item -Path "C:\path\to\SourceFolder" -Destination "C:\path\to\DestParent\SourceFolder_tmp" -Force

Fix on macOS (Finder)

Finder usually protects you from overwriting by refusing to move a folder when the destination already has a folder with the same name. The fixes are mostly about name collisions, permissions, and sync/restrictions.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Verify the destination folder doesn’t block the move

Before you move anything, open the destination parent folder and confirm whether an item with the same name already exists. Also check if the destination is a system-protected or restricted location (for example, inside certain app bundles or protected folders).

If you’re unsure, try moving into a neutral folder first like Documents and then move again from there.

Move from a neutral location (Desktop/Documents)

macOS sometimes behaves more predictably when the source isn’t inside a sync-managed folder or a restricted area. If your folder is in Downloads, Desktop, or Documents, try moving it from there first.

Unlock/remove restrictions and check permissions

On the destination parent (or the conflicting folder), check permissions and whether items are locked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the destination folder > Get Info.
  2. Look for Locked and uncheck it if needed.
  3. In Sharing & Permissions, confirm your account has Read & Write.

If permissions are the issue, you’ll often need an admin account or you’ll have to move the folder to a location you can fully write to.

Restart Finder and retry

If Finder is stuck in a bad state (for example, after a failed move), a quick restart can resolve it:

  1. Press Option + right-click the Finder icon in the Dock.
  2. Choose Relaunch.
  3. Retry the move.

Check iCloud Drive sync behavior

If your folder is under iCloud Drive, conflicts can happen when iCloud is simultaneously syncing folder structures. The symptom can look exactly like “folder already exists.”

  • Pause syncing (System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive, depending on macOS version).
  • Retry the move.
  • Resume syncing after the move succeeds.

Edge cases that trigger this error

Destination folder is the same as the source (or a junction)

Sometimes the destination you think is different is actually the same folder via a link, junction, mapped drive, or mounted volume. Windows and macOS may detect this and stop the operation to prevent loops or ambiguous overwrites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Double-check by comparing the full source and destination paths (including drive letters/mount points).

Files inside the folder are in use

If something inside the folder is actively used (database, editor, syncing client, virtual machine image), the move may fail even if the folder name conflict looks like the main error. Close apps that might have open handles, then retry.

Case-only name differences (Windows vs macOS)

Case sensitivity differences can cause confusing behavior. For example, Windows is typically case-insensitive, while macOS can be case-insensitive too—but not always (depending on the filesystem). If the only difference is capitalization, the system may still treat it as “the same folder” and block the move.

Non-ASCII characters and long paths

Special characters (non-ASCII) and very long paths can break assumptions in some tools and sync clients. If your folder name or subfolder tree is deep, shorten the path or move to a simpler location first (like C:\Temp on Windows or a shallow folder on macOS).

Troubleshooting flow when the main fix fails

  • Confirm the conflict: open the destination parent folder and verify the exact name that already exists.
  • Create a new destination folder: move into DestParent\NewName to avoid collisions.
  • Pause sync: OneDrive/iCloud Drive can recreate the conflicting folder immediately.
  • Shorten the path: move to a short temporary location first, then move again.
  • Try command-line: use robocopy (Windows) or Finder after relaunch (macOS) depending on what’s failing.

Alternatives when you just need the contents moved

If you don’t actually need the folder itself—only its contents—there’s a practical workaround: copy the contents into the existing destination folder and then delete the original folder afterward (only if you’re confident everything copied correctly).

For example, you can open the source folder, select everything inside, copy it, paste into the destination, wait for completion, then remove the original folder. This bypasses some “folder name” collision rules because you’re not trying to create a new folder with the same name.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Renaming only one side while leaving the destination collision intact.
  • Using drag-and-drop repeatedly without changing the destination or method.
  • Ignoring sync tools (OneDrive/iCloud) and retrying too quickly.
  • Moving from/to protected locations without confirming permissions.
  • Forcing moves without verifying the destination path (especially with PowerShell/robocopy).

FAQs

Why does Windows say there’s a folder in the same location when I don’t see it?

It may exist under a slightly different name, be hidden by a sync client, or be recreated instantly by OneDrive. It can also exist as a junction/mount point that isn’t obvious in the UI.

Will renaming the source folder always fix it?

Renaming often helps because it eliminates the direct name collision. However, if the destination already contains the final name you’re trying to create (or sync is reintroducing it), you’ll still need to use a new destination folder name or pause syncing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to delete the existing destination folder?

Only if you’re sure it contains nothing you need. If you’re uncertain, rename it temporarily, move your data elsewhere, and compare contents before deleting.

Bottom Line

That “can’t move the folder because there is a folder in the same location” message is almost always a name collision combined with how Windows/macOS prevents overwriting. The fastest fix is typically creating a new destination folder (or renaming the source first) and making sure you’re not hitting a sync or permission restriction.

If the GUI keeps failing, switch to a controlled move (robocopy on Windows, or Finder after addressing permissions and iCloud sync on macOS). Once you avoid the destination collision and pause any sync services, the move usually works smoothly.
