A blank screenshot is usually a symptom, not a diagnosis. Find out whether Lambda reached the intended page, whether the page rendered the content you expect, and whether Puppeteer captured and saved the image correctly—in that order. A 403 page, unfinished client-side app, closed browser, or missing uploaded artifact can all look like a blank capture.
Diagnose where the blank image starts
Log what happened before and after page.screenshot(). Record the requested and final URLs, navigation response status, page title, expected content, browser or page errors, and the screenshot output path. This helps separate a failed or blocked page load from a capture or delivery problem. AWS’s canary example checks for a missing response and rejects non-2xx status codes before proceeding: AWS CloudWatch Synthetics canary samples.

- Navigation: Did navigation return a response? What was its status and final URL? A redirect, 403, challenge, or error page is not necessarily a failure of Puppeteer’s screenshot API.
- Page readiness: Is the expected content present and visible before capture? Check a stable selector or an application-specific ready signal.
- Capture: Does the screenshot promise complete before the handler ends, and is the capture scope configured as intended?
- Output: Does the expected file or returned byte buffer exist and contain an image? If the local file is correct but the delivered artifact is absent, investigate the upload or display path.
Make one change at a time. Without your code, Lambda logs, target URL, and output, the root cause cannot be identified reliably.

Wait for the target page to be ready
There is no universal wait condition for every site. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; AWS’s canary example uses domcontentloaded followed by an explicit wait. Choose based on the page’s behavior, then verify that the content needed for the screenshot has appeared. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide and the AWS sample.

For a client-rendered page, wait for a meaningful selector rather than assuming that the initial document event means the app is ready. A fixed delay can mask a timing issue and still be too short under load. Inspect failed requests and timeouts as well: the page may never receive the data or assets that populate the element.
Use a diagnostic capture in Lambda
Log page state immediately before capture. Take a temporary screenshot at that point and compare it with the final output. If the diagnostic image is already blank or shows an error page, investigate navigation, rendering, access controls, and resources. If it looks right, focus on capture options, file handling, and upload.
- Log the requested URL,
response.status()when a response exists,page.url(), andpage.title(). - Check that the expected selector exists and is visible; log relevant text where useful.
- Record page errors, console errors, and failed requests.
- Save a known diagnostic output and inspect the file or returned bytes before investigating downstream delivery.

AWS notes that a site protected by AWS WAF can block canary traffic and recommends using a custom user agent approved by the site’s WAF configuration. This guidance is specifically for CloudWatch Synthetics; for other Lambda deployments, check the target site’s access rules and your own network configuration rather than assuming the same setup applies. AWS troubleshooting guidance.
Verify the deployed Chromium and Puppeteer bundle
A function that works locally may use a browser binary, dependency, or launch path that is absent from the deployed Lambda package. Check the actual deployment artifact and confirm its Node.js runtime, architecture, Chromium binary path, launch arguments, and Puppeteer/Chromium compatibility. Also consider package size and whether fonts or other resources needed by the page are available.
Puppeteer’s deployment troubleshooting notes the package-size challenges of headless Chrome and points to sparticuz/chromium as a community option. That is not a universal Lambda launch recipe: use instructions and compatibility information for the versions and deployment method you actually run. Puppeteer troubleshooting.
If you use the AWS-managed CloudWatch Synthetics runtime syn-nodejs-puppeteer-12.0, AWS lists Lambda Node.js 22.x, Puppeteer-core 24.22.1, and Chromium 140.0.7339.185 for that runtime. Those are the documented versions for this managed pairing, not a general compatibility guarantee for independently packaged functions. Check the runtime you deploy and its matching release information. CloudWatch Synthetics library and runtime versions.

Check Lambda duration and browser lifecycle
Measure resource pressure
If rendering is slower in Lambda than on your machine, measure duration and resource behavior before changing configuration. AWS explains that Lambda memory allocation also affects CPU; increasing memory can therefore increase processing capacity as well as memory. Whether that helps depends on the measured bottleneck. AWS Lambda memory configuration.
Await all browser work
Keep the browser open until navigation, readiness checks, and screenshot capture have finished. An unawaited operation may continue after the browser closes; CloudWatch Synthetics documents Target closed as a troubleshooting case. Await each asynchronous step within the function’s lifecycle. AWS troubleshooting guidance.
Set a suitable timeout
AWS says a CloudWatch Synthetics canary that exceeds its timeout may stop before publishing metrics or updating artifacts, and recommends at least 15 seconds to allow for Lambda cold starts and canary instrumentation boot. This is Synthetics-specific guidance, not a universal timeout for all Puppeteer Lambda functions. Set the timeout for your workload and allow enough time for its actual navigation and rendering behavior. AWS troubleshooting guidance.

If the screenshot is missing from a CloudWatch Synthetics artifact
Separate capture from artifact delivery: first verify the screenshot locally in the canary run, then check the S3 and encryption configuration. AWS identifies permissions including s3:GetBucketLocation and s3:PutObject for canary uploads; visual monitoring can require additional read permissions. Bucket policies or customer-managed KMS keys can also prevent artifact upload. These checks apply to CloudWatch Synthetics artifact handling, not ordinary local file writes. AWS troubleshooting guidance.
Common blank-screenshot symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot shows an error, challenge, or unexpected page | Navigation response, redirects, WAF or other access controls | Log status and final URL; inspect the page and verify access rules and resource requests. |
| Shell renders but app content is missing | Client-side readiness, failed requests, or an unsuitable wait condition | Wait for a stable app-ready selector and inspect failed requests, console errors, and timeouts. |
| Works locally but fails in Lambda | Missing or incompatible deployed browser package, path, arguments, or runtime resources | Inspect the deployed artifact and verify runtime, architecture, binary path, and version compatibility. |
Run ends with Target closed |
Browser closed while asynchronous work remained | Await navigation, readiness, and screenshot promises before closing the browser or finishing the handler. |
| Image is cropped, transparent, or appears empty | Viewport, fullPage, clip, or background options |
Inspect the capture bounds and options, then compare the saved image against a diagnostic capture. |
| Capture appears successful but artifact is absent | CloudWatch Synthetics S3, bucket policy, or KMS permissions | Verify the relevant canary permissions and encryption policy; do not treat this as a local screenshot failure. |
| Lambda is much slower than local execution | Resource limits, cold start, or page behavior | Measure duration and resource use, then adjust capacity or timeout based on evidence. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Make one GET request with a URL to receive a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For this use, it can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

FAQ
Should I always use networkidle2?
No. It is one documented example, not a rule for every page. Use a wait condition that fits the site and confirm that the content you need is present.
Does a screenshot call prove the page loaded correctly?
No. A screenshot can faithfully capture an error page or a page whose application content has not rendered. Check the navigation response and expected page content separately.
