One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA blank search engine results page (SERP) screenshot does not, by itself, prove that Chrome’s GPU failed. First identify the Chrome version, executable and Headless mode actually in use; then verify the screenshot file and viewport; next check whether the page had rendered before capture. Investigate graphics settings only when the page or browser diagnostics point to a graphics-specific problem.
1. Identify the Chrome version, binary and Headless mode
Start by recording what actually launched, rather than relying on a setup guide written for another Chrome release. Chrome unified Headless with regular Chrome code in Chrome 112. Starting with Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the old Headless implementation became available as a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. Those version changes mean that older advice about flags or behavior may not match your current executable. See Chrome’s Headless mode documentation.
Collect these details from the failing run:
- The full Chrome version and executable path.
- The operating system and, if applicable, container image.
- The automation framework and its version, such as Puppeteer or Selenium WebDriver.
- The complete command or launch arguments.
- Whether the process launched unified Headless Chrome or
chrome-headless-shell.
Compare those details with a successful run, if you have one. Also try the same target page in headful Chrome: whether the failure reproduces there is useful diagnostic evidence, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
2. Confirm the screenshot file and viewport
Before investigating page painting, make sure you are looking at the artifact produced by the failing run. Chrome’s command-line --screenshot option saves screenshot.png in the process’s current working directory. A different working directory, an old file, or an unexpected viewport can make a capture appear blank or misleading. The official Headless command-line reference documents the screenshot and viewport flags.

For a reproducible CLI check, use an explicit viewport and an absolute output path:
google-chrome --headless --window-size=1365,900 --screenshot=/tmp/serp.png "https://www.google.com/search?q=example"
Replace google-chrome with the executable you identified; the name and location differ by installation. Check that /tmp/serp.png was created by this run, can be decoded as an image, and has the expected dimensions. If your installed Chrome build does not accept an absolute path for --screenshot, run the command from a known working directory and locate screenshot.png there.

3. Check navigation, page state and capture timing
A screenshot can be taken before a page’s visible content is ready, particularly when rendering depends on delayed scripts or other time-dependent behavior. Confirm that navigation completed and that the SERP content you expect exists in the DOM before capturing. In automation code, wait for a meaningful page condition or selector rather than relying on a short fixed sleep.
CLI timing controls
Chrome documents two different timing controls: --timeout waits up to a specified number of milliseconds before capture, while --virtual-time-budget advances virtual time so time-dependent code can run. They are not interchangeable: one sets a maximum real-time wait; the other advances the page’s virtual clock. Neither flag guarantees that a particular page has finished rendering. See the CLI reference for current command-line usage.
For example, you can test whether additional wait time changes the artifact:

google-chrome --headless --window-size=1365,900 --timeout=5000 --screenshot=/tmp/serp-wait.png "https://www.google.com/search?q=example"
Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a universal fix. If you use virtual time instead, test it separately and compare the resulting screenshot; advancing virtual time can change behavior on time-dependent pages.
4. Isolate graphics-specific failures instead of guessing
Do not add --disable-gpu reflexively. The Headless Chrome shell documentation describes it as a temporary workaround required only on Windows at that time; that historical note is not evidence that it fixes a current blank capture on every platform. Chrome’s later discussion of graphics flags focuses on enabling WebGPU and WebGL scenarios on Linux, a narrower case than ordinary screenshot capture. See the Headless Chrome shell page and Chrome’s WebGPU/WebGL guidance.

If the target page uses GPU-backed content or browser logs indicate graphics initialization trouble, compare controlled runs with and without the relevant graphics setting. Keep the page, Chrome binary, viewport and timing the same so the comparison is meaningful. Inspect chrome://gpu where available, along with browser and console diagnostics. Do not copy security-sensitive launch flags from examples unless you understand their effect.
5. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next diagnostic step |
|---|---|---|
| No screenshot file, or the file is not the one from the latest run | Current working directory, output path, process exit status and exact executable invoked. | Run from a known directory and use a fresh output filename; confirm which binary processed the command. |
| Image opens but dimensions are unexpected | The actual image dimensions and whether the intended --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT reached Chrome. |
Set the viewport explicitly, capture to a new file and inspect its dimensions again. |
| Image is valid but the SERP content is absent | Whether navigation completed and the expected content exists in the DOM before capture. | Wait for a meaningful page condition in your framework, or compare a CLI run with a longer --timeout. |
| Content appears only after a delay or animation | Whether the page relies on delayed scripts, animation or other time-dependent code. | Compare a real-time --timeout with a separately controlled --virtual-time-budget run. |
| Browser logs point to graphics initialization, or the page contains GPU-backed rendering | Chrome version and binary, OS, graphics diagnostics, and whether the issue occurs headful as well. | Make a controlled comparison with applicable graphics settings; inspect chrome://gpu where available. |
These are diagnostic branches, not proven explanations for any particular blank image. The available Chrome documentation does not establish a single root cause for an individual failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blank screenshot prove that Chrome’s GPU is broken?
No. The image alone does not identify a cause; compare the runtime, artifact, page state and diagnostics before attributing the failure to graphics.
Are `–timeout` and `–virtual-time-budget` the same kind of wait?
No. `–timeout` sets a maximum real-time wait before capture; `–virtual-time-budget` advances virtual time for time-dependent code.
