A Puppeteer screenshot can be blank because navigation finished before the client-side app rendered the content. Wait for a condition tied to the page state you need—usually a stable, visible content selector—then call page.screenshot(). networkidle2 is a useful navigation baseline, but it does not prove that a particular component or its data is ready.
Wait for rendered content before taking the screenshot
Set the viewport before navigation if the site renders differently at different sizes. Navigate with waitUntil: 'networkidle2', check the response status, and then wait for a page-specific element that appears when the needed content is rendered.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
// Set the viewport before navigation if the app depends on it.
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
});
if (response && !response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Navigation returned HTTP ${response.status()}`);
}
// Replace with a stable selector that appears when the needed content renders.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="page-content"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 30000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with networkidle2 followed by page.screenshot(); its documentation says to use Page.screenshot() for capturing screenshots. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and Page API. The documentation pages identify version 25.12.0; check the docs for the Puppeteer version and browser pairing deployed in your project.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →waitForSelector(..., { visible: true }) resolves when the selector is in the DOM and visible under Puppeteer’s documented visibility checks: the element is not hidden by display: none or visibility: hidden. It does not establish that all descendants, images, animations, or application data are ready. Pick a selector that represents the content your screenshot must show, not merely an app shell. The selector API documents a 30-second default timeout. See Page.waitForSelector.

Choose a wait that proves the right thing
| Wait | What it tells you | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' |
A navigation lifecycle condition; not proof that the desired UI or data has rendered. | A useful baseline for many captures, especially when followed by a page-specific readiness check. |
waitForSelector(selector, { visible: true }) |
The selector exists and passes Puppeteer’s documented visibility check. | Best when the app has a stable content container or readiness marker. |
waitForFunction(predicate) |
The browser-side predicate returned a truthy value. | Use when readiness depends on text, a state marker, or another condition not well expressed by a selector. |
For example, if the page renders a heading only after data arrives, wait for that meaningful content rather than a generic root element:
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const heading = document.querySelector('main h1');
return heading?.textContent?.trim() === 'Account overview';
}, { timeout: 30000 });
Make the predicate specific enough to distinguish completed content from an empty shell. The Page API documents waitForFunction() as waiting until its function returns a truthy value.

Avoid relying on an arbitrary sleep as the main fix. A fixed delay may expire too soon on a slow run and waste time on a fast one; an observable readiness condition is more directly tied to the page state you need. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee about how any particular website behaves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDiagnose a screenshot that is still blank
- Check the navigation response. Keep the value returned by
page.goto()and inspect its status, as in the example. A non-success HTTP response is different from a client app that has not finished rendering. The Page API documents the navigation response and status access. - Confirm the readiness selector is correct. If
waitForSelectortimes out, the selector may be wrong, the expected content may be inside a frame or shadow root, or the page may be showing a consent, login, or error state. Puppeteer’s selector API documents supported selector forms and timeout behavior: Page.waitForSelector. - Look for JavaScript and request failures. Attach page error and request-failure listeners before navigation, then inspect console output and failed requests. These checks can help distinguish a timing issue from a script or resource failure; a blank capture does not by itself identify one cause.
- Verify the target and viewport. Check that the page being captured is the page you navigated to, and set the viewport before navigation when responsive rendering matters. For a particular element, Puppeteer documents
ElementHandle.screenshot(); it attempts to scroll the element into view if hidden. See the ElementHandle screenshot API. - Check browser startup and the runtime environment. If Chrome does not start or behaves differently in a container, review Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide. It notes that Chrome writes profile, configuration, and cache files during startup, so read-only containers need writable locations for those paths. It also advises using a Chromium version supported by the Puppeteer version in use.
Capture a specific element instead of the whole page
If the goal is one rendered component rather than a full-page image, wait for its selector and use its element handle. This can make the readiness condition and capture target the same thing.

For this approach, the selector must identify the element whose rendered appearance you need. Puppeteer documents element screenshots in its screenshot guide.

For a one-request screenshot, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its API can wait for a selector, delay, or network idle; for an app-rendered page, use the selector option as the readiness condition where appropriate. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current request parameters.

Why does Puppeteer navigate successfully but capture a blank page?
Navigation completion does not establish that a client-rendered app has mounted the component or loaded the data you need. Wait for a meaningful rendered-state condition before capturing.

Is networkidle2 enough for a React page?
It can be a useful navigation baseline, but it does not verify that a particular React component or its data is ready. Follow it with a selector or predicate tied to the content in the screenshot.
What does visible: true guarantee in waitForSelector?
It checks that the selected element exists and is not hidden by display: none or visibility: hidden. It does not guarantee that images, descendants, animations, or app data are complete.
