It can appear when a graphics operation stops responding and Windows attempts to recover the display driver; the app may remain frozen or black even after the screen returns. Start by checking whether it happens in one app or across several, then try the least disruptive fixes first.
What the message means—and what it does not
Microsoft documents VIDEO_TDR_APPLICATION_BLOCKED, value 0x00000142, as a live-dump identifier indicating that an application was blocked from accessing graphics hardware. Microsoft cautions that “This code can never be used for a real bug check; it is used to identify live dumps.” It is programmer-oriented documentation, not a consumer diagnosis of a failed GPU. In consumer troubleshooting, the notification is commonly discussed alongside a graphics operation that exceeds a timeout and Windows’ Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) process. The display may flicker or recover while the affected application stays black, frozen, or unusable. That is a plausible explanation for the symptoms, not proof that every notification has one cause. iTechGuides’ Windows 11 troubleshooting guide describes this context.
Possible causes include an app-specific workload or setting, a driver problem, overlays or modifications, temperature or power issues, unstable overclock or undervolt settings, and hardware faults. The notification alone cannot distinguish among them.

First determine whether it is one app or several
- Only one app or game: Start with that app’s graphics settings, frame rate, overlays, optional hardware acceleration, mods or plug-ins, and updates. On a laptop with hybrid graphics, also check which adapter the app uses.
- Several unrelated graphics apps: Look beyond one app. Check the relevant display drivers, recent driver changes, system stability, temperatures, cooling, and power connections.
- It began just after a driver update: A rollback is worth testing before assuming the GPU is defective.
This pattern helps prioritize checks; it does not establish a diagnosis on its own.
Try these fixes in order

Recover the app and restart Windows
Close and reopen the affected application. If the screen recovered but the app did not, it may need to be relaunched. Restart Windows if the problem persists, then try to reproduce the issue.

Update or reinstall the driver for the GPU the app uses
Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for display-driver updates. You can also use the official support page for your PC or graphics-card manufacturer. Choose a package that matches your hardware and Windows version; avoid third-party driver-download sites.

On a laptop with more than one adapter, identify which one the affected app is using before changing a driver. In Windows graphics preferences, you can review an app’s GPU choice at Settings > System > Display > Graphics; available choices depend on the PC.

In Device Manager, right-click the relevant display adapter and choose Update driver. If updating does not help, use the manufacturer’s supported installation instructions or uninstall and reinstall the appropriate driver. Avoid removing multiple adapters or drivers indiscriminately, especially on a hybrid-graphics laptop.

Roll back if the issue followed an update
In Device Manager, right-click the relevant adapter, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, if that option is available. Restart and test the app. The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver package to restore.

Reduce the affected app’s graphics load
If only one app fails, lower its resolution or render scale and reduce demanding graphics settings. Cap its frame rate, update the app, and temporarily disable overlays, optional hardware acceleration, mods, or plug-ins. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change matters.

Restore stable system settings and check cooling
If failures recur across workloads, return GPU, CPU, and memory to stock settings by undoing overclocks or undervolts. Check that vents are clear, fans are operating, and—on a desktop—the graphics card’s power connections are secure. Do not begin with repeated stress tests if the PC is already crashing during ordinary use.

When to seek hardware diagnosis
Arrange a hardware diagnosis if the problem keeps returning after driver and stability checks, particularly when several unrelated 3D apps fail, visual artifacts appear, the PC crashes under graphics load, or the GPU disappears from Device Manager. These symptoms strengthen the case for further investigation, but the notification by itself is not conclusive evidence of a defective graphics card.
Why increasing TdrDelay is not a general fix
Changing the Windows TdrDelay registry value changes how long Windows waits before treating a graphics operation as hung. It does not repair the underlying driver, app workload, temperature, power, stability, or hardware problem, and it may leave a real hang in place longer. It is not a sensible first-line remedy for this message.
