Then check whether Loop Playlist is enabled and whether the source is set to stop when hidden. These are separate settings: a valid path makes a file reachable; looping and visibility behavior determine what happens at the end of playback or when you switch scenes.
First confirm which OBS source you are using
These steps apply to OBS Studio’s built-in VLC Video Source, which supports playlists using VLC libraries. It is different from the built-in Media Source and from the separate Media Playlist Source plugin. If your source has a different name, check its own properties rather than assuming the VLC-specific settings apply.

OBS says VLC must be installed for VLC Video Source to appear as an available source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources help page for the source requirements and settings.
Repair playlist entries after a path change
- Open the source properties. In OBS, select the scene containing the source, find the VLC Video Source in the Sources list, and open its properties.
- Inspect every playlist item. Look for entries that refer to the old file or folder location. A move, rename, changed drive letter, remounted drive, or changed network location can leave an entry pointing somewhere the file is no longer available.
- Replace the outdated path. Edit or remove the affected playlist entry and add the file from its current location. Make sure the file is reachable from the computer running OBS; a path that exists on another computer is not sufficient.
- Test the repaired item. Apply the properties and check whether that file plays. If one entry is still unavailable, correct that entry before diagnosing playlist continuation.
OBS’s VLC source implementation rebuilds its playlist from the source settings and includes handling for missing files: an entry can be updated with a replacement path or removed if no replacement is supplied. That behavior supports checking the saved entries, but it does not establish the cause of any particular playback failure.

Check whether playback is stopping at the end or when hidden
If it stops after the last item
In the VLC Video Source properties, check Loop Playlist. OBS documents this setting as controlling whether playback restarts after it runs out of media files. If you expect continuous playback, enable it and test the playlist through the final item.
If it stops when you change scenes
Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents a default behavior of Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If the source becomes hidden during a scene change, that setting can stop playback while it is hidden. This is distinct from a stale path: changing visibility behavior cannot make a missing file reachable.

Use the timing of the failure to narrow the cause: a failure on a particular moved file points toward its path; a stop at the end of the list points toward looping; and a stop that coincides with hiding the source points toward visibility behavior.
If the built-in VLC source is missing
- Confirm that VLC is installed on the same system as OBS.
- If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC, as OBS specifies.
- Reopen or refresh OBS’s source options and check whether VLC Video Source is available.
When a separate playlist plugin may be relevant
If all paths are valid but the playlist still fails to continue, you can evaluate Media Playlist Source as a separate OBS plugin. The plugin listing describes it as an alternative that uses Media Source internally and says playlists can be edited during playback, including reordering items.

Its release history is relevant to specific continuation symptoms, not proof that it fixes stale paths in OBS’s built-in VLC source. The plugin’s 0.1.3 update, dated April 13, 2025, lists fixes for continuing after a transition and for continuing when the next item has the same video path. Check the listing and release history for compatibility with your OBS version and platform before installing: requirements and Windows installation details have changed between releases.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- A particular item fails: inspect and replace that item’s saved path with the current file location.
- Playback ends after the final item: check whether Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops on a scene change: inspect Visibility Behaviour and whether the source becomes hidden.
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: install VLC, matching 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS.
- Paths are valid but continuation remains unreliable: check the Media Playlist Source plugin’s current compatibility and whether its documented fixes match the symptom.
